Story #3 I think part of that is that we, the patients, know that the longer we stay at a US hospital, the more money we will need to pay later

"You don't seem to be in a lot of pain" Well sorry i'm not yelling and screaming for the whole hospital to hear. Sorry i'm just calmly relaying my symptoms rather than grabbing you by the collar and demanding painkillers. My whole life i've had very strong emotions, so for the sake of everyone else, and to avoid perpetually getting myself in trouble, i learned to control my behavior. But i am in fact experiencing immense pain and every other doctor i've contacted will see me in a month, so i came to the ER before i lost my last bit of sanity, now HELP ME!

That first one isn't unreasonable at all. If you're having chronic, unexplained pain and all your test results are coming out normal, of course you're gonna be upset. Being in constant pain will naturally turn you irritable. I'm glad I protested when my test results for my chronic abdominal pain came back normal. After insisting through the sobs of someone who had been in the worst pain of my life for three straight week that they should try another test, they found out I had a staph infection and if I had waited another week to get help, it would most likely have killed me. That first doctor sounds like a jerk.

If the DR did not decide to over-rule the Specialist and ignore my tumor until years later when it was cancerous and the size of a lemon, maybe we would sue less?

I think that negligence is the exception. They mean unreasonable reasons to sue are the problem

I understand your point, however there are cases where the doctor truly did their best and yet got sued which is what the person in that situation is talking about.

the thing I hate about hospital related posts are the doctors/nurses who act like entitled jerks who can do no wrong and just want to blame patients, especially when I have only had bad experiences recently that were results from them being lazy and not knowing what they are doing. for example, I get my friend to take me to the ER because I was in so much pain that it was causing me to puke and black out for short periods of time. We get there ( thankfully she decided she was going to stay with me even though I told her multiple times that she could go home) and the ER was empty of patients. We fairly quickly get into a room, the nurse proceeds to stab me 15 times, switching from one arm to the other, to get an IV in. I admit that some of it was my fault because I was curled into the fetal position because of the pain, but was trying my best to remain still, but by now way was I flailing around or anything. There waiting for about 2 hours until they get me to get a CT scan, dead silence the throughout the hospital. Get back to the room and there for about an hour and a half and I have to pee like crazy and end up breaking down and pushing the call button to get some help and that is when they tell me that they need a pee sample, which would have been nice to know at any time beforehand. Then about another 2 hours go by and me friend is getting a little upset that they are taking forever, especially since we constantly hear the nurses and doctor just hanging at the desk (its just a couple feet outside the room) chatting and laughing, then a little after and a nurse walks in and says "oh, yous are still here? Did the doctor give your results and dismiss you yet?". A few minutes later the doctor finally comes in, kind of chuckling while he gives me the results and such which ends up being bilateral kidney stones, one fully blocking (1cm stone) and another partially obstructing (7mm stone) with a couple smaller stones throughout ranging between 1-5mm. I leave and go to doctors appointment a few days later and the doctor tells me that he wants to make me a fast track patient because if I don't get it taken care of and they both become fully obstructed, I will go into kidney failure and die. So we get an appointment set up for about a week later for surgery. In that time, I got the bill for the ER, which I was surprised because they had it marked that I owe $0 and that they were using it as a tax write off, which I was completely fine with. The day comes and I pay someone to take the day off of work to take me out to the hospital where I could get the surgery and make sure I pay them $450 to cover their day of work they missed as well as the driving and all. We get there and I am talking with the one nurse as we are completing everything to sign me in for the surgery and that is when she makes a "wtf face" and calls (i assume) her manager and they are both staring at their computer screen and the manager asks me "Do you have your down payment?" Confused, I ask her what she meant and she asks "Did anyone tell you about your down payment?" "No...?" "Oh, in order for you to be able to get the surgery today, you have to make a $9,000 down payment and it looks here like there are no options for a payment plan or anything since you don't have insurance" Which really pissed me off because there was plenty of time for them to mention it before I was already there for the surgery, so I ended up leaving.

I went to my PCP yesterday. I told her that I have bronchitis and need an antibiotic, a round of steroids, and mobilizing solution. She listened to my lungs and told me I was right. She knows I’ve been getting bronchitis every year longer than she’s been alive, 35 years.

Not a doctor or nurse, but a patient in dialysis and it's something the nurses told me. They prefer to keep the patients on the machines for as long a the doctor says. There's one patient that tries to take homself off. Im not sure if anyone knows, but in dialysis, most patients get about 15 gauge needles, I use 16s because I'm small. Anyways, they're bigand they go into big veins, veins that has a lot of blood in them. I haven't seen it myself, but I am imagining a lot of blood. He refused medical treatment and a trip to the hospital. Dialysis is fun, don't y'all think?

Story #22 I once left against medical advice to go to a better hospital.
The first hospital was merely the one closest to me. My illness caused dehydration, and the nurses stabbed me 20 times trying to draw a blood sample. When they talked about going for the arteries in my neck, I grew afraid of their seemingly lack of competency and left against their advice.
I eventually made my way to the hospital that was farther away but had a better reputation. I drank a bunch of Gatorade on the way, and they only needed 2 tries to draw blood. When I talked to the staff about my experience at the first hospital, they said they were surprised they didn't move on and try an xray or something else after that many failed attempts (2nd hospital did give me a medical scan when figuring out what was wrong with me).

Had an orthopedic surgeon tell me that he liked smokers, because a smoker just wanted to get outside for a smoke and non-smokers just stayed in bed.. With the smokers getting out of bed and moving around, the smoker needed less physiotherapy and the stay in hospital would be much shorter.

Well, at least none of them mentioned my worry that I annoy people by being too curious about the scientific details and asking too many specific questions about their job.

I had pain in the joint in my finger close to the nail. It would occasionally cause my finger to stiffen. I went to urgent care. The doctor saw my fingernail was slightly yellow due to my work machine. She diagnosed me with an ingrown nail without actually looking at the joint. I could tell she was annoyed with me for coming in. That pain has now radiated down my finger and into the palm of my hand. My point is that doctors shouldn't complain about us waisting their time if they won't actually look at the issue. Kaiser, you suck.

    Not a Doctor, but ......
I worked in a hospital in the 1980's. Yes the hospital did have a butt box, things found in peoples butts and also had a butt x-ray folder.
The x-rays backed up that some of the big things came out of butts or the VJJ

I avoid pain killers because pain is nature's way of telling you DON'T DO THAT!

    • @silver5515
      @silver5515 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

While that is usually true, sometimes nature is incorrect.
I have experienced this several times. Once when I hurt my back. My doctor ordered me to take up to a certain amount of painkillers, so that I was able to do the exercises that would actually make my back better again.
The seccond time was when I had a c-section due to bad pneumonia. I had to cough to get the slime out if I wanted to get of the oxygen, and so I had to take a lot of medication to be able to cough despite my abdominal surgery.
When I am pregnant I also get tension headache induced migrains. A smal dose of paracetamol to kill the tension headache early is much better than migraine medication when you are pregnant.
