- Unfortunately, Russia is the only country in the world, where capturing orcas is legal, with the quotes officially issued. It happens in the sea of Okhotsk, which is an extremely remote place and very far from public eyes. According to the unofficial statistics, the capture of one baby-orca is accompanied by the death of one adult orca. This year, for the first time in the Russian history, a small team of caring and brave Sakhalin volunteers from Marine Mammals Rescue Team “Ocean Friends” was conducting public monitoring of orcas capture.

К сожалению, в России продолжаются отловы косаток. Происходит это в Охотском море, в очень диких местах, вдали от людских глаз. Существует негласная статистика, что на одну отловленную особь приходится одна мертвая. В этом году впервые команда неравнодушных и самоотверженных волонтеров из группы помощи морским животным «Друзья Океана» проводила общественный контроль и наблюдение за отловами косаток.

I shudder to think,china has zero animal welfare laws & these orcas are destined for a life of misery,anyone thinking they can thrive in a country that eats dogs & has polar bears in malls,is out of their mind
LynnSki76 I know! I don’t understand how some Chinese people think it is still ok to use endangered animals to make their “medicine”. Most of them usually related to fertility or virility. Do they not KNOW they are driving animals to extinction? Or do they just not care?
If you want to get real sick, look up the plight of the vacquita. They are the smallest known porpoise and are down to only 37. They are collateral damage in the netting of a fish, which is also on the brink of extinction, just so the Chinese market can have their swim bladders. Guess what eating these swim bladders is thought to help? Same old story.
Ugh! I know I am making a sweeping generalization about a huge country but the market for all these endangered animals comes from there.
And now, they decide to give the middle finger to all the research about the orcas and start their Sea World. My only hope is that the younger generation in China get to see this channel and other documentaries like Blackfish and The Cove and their hearts and minds will be on the right side of history.
