Robert Thompson I believe you only store items going somewhere but coming back you don’t, and special items like fishing rod or bottomless pot you don’t store.
I'll have to go play and check, you might only be able to take to certain islands and not the original, so try taking it first somewhere else first. I beat the game and I believe I got a new island but it's been a long time.
If this is for the quest I think you have to build a fish tank and put them in it. One of the islands teach you how to build the fish tanks and once you put the fish in and complete the quest maybe you can use it on the final island that is a big sand box for building.
You have to look around, not sure if night or day matters, its been awhile but I was on the skinny walkway over water, the other person found it. They are real small.

I got my 3 angelfish but when I go to the anglers isle I don’t see my fish in my inventory

Angel fish are the tiny ones, stand in location and fish until you catch one, many others have.
How are you able to keep items bc I am told to storage my items when I bored the ship ?
