  • Welcome to this week's episode where we have a lot of fun sailing! We learn how important it is to use the centre board when launching on a leeward wind and we share about our up and coming plans in the next few weeks - very exciting!!
    Enjoy and thanks for watching,

You need to make putting the centre board down part of your initial rigging procedure as soon as you are in the water. First in puts the centre board down. Putting it down straight away also serves to stabilise the boat whist you are in the boat setting up. This is one of the first things we teach at our club and try to make it second nature. Hope this helps.

Hey guys. Great video. I have a gull spirit and have it aft main rigged. I sail mainly single handed and find this works brilliantly for me as I have much more open space in the cockpit.
With practice you will figure out tacking while facing forwards and passing the tiller from hand to hand behind you.
If you fancy a sail at a superb lake in Lechlade you’d be welcome as a guest for a day.

Wow! Thank you, that would be brilliant! We would definitely like to arrange that. Our email is hello@danandrow.com (incase this gets blocked, you can find it in our 'About' section on our channel).
Look forward to coming to Lechlade... 😀

OK, sorry to blitz you with a load more of my pearls of wisdom (not)....
I have a soft spot for Gulls, my dad nearly bought one when we first started sailing, but eventually got a GP14 instead. An excellent boat to learn on and small enough to not break your backs getting it around on land. Wayfarers, whilst great boats in many ways, are right on the limit weight wise for two adult males to shift (guess how I know).
Telltales are good, but also get to use the ones on the sails, especially the jib, as well.
I suggest upgrading the kicker (vang) to a more powerful set up, it'll give you more control in a breeze.
Plus 10 brownie points for watching the wind gusts on the water. This awareness is vital. Also for thinking through which is the 'making' tack when leaving the shore, i.e. the one that gets you clear of the shore quickest. Be a bit careful of launching off the pontoon. I know it keeps your feet dry, but it tends to lock you in to leaving on one tack, whereas off the shore keeps your options more open, and will be the norm at 90% of launch sites.
Be careful of steering so far into the wind that the jib goes aback- that is, the wind fills it from the other side. If this happens, uncleat it and let it blow through to the other side of the boat. In the light breeze in this video, it's not that important, but if you do that in a strong breeze, the boat will tack, whether you plan to or not, and may well capsize you .
I couldn't see from the vid whether, with the aft mainsheet, you are tacking facing forward or aft. Most sailors below a certain age, will have grown up with centre mainsheet systems, but aft sheeting has a couple of advantages. Firstly, it keeps a load of string out of the middle of the boat. Secondly, it eliminates all the behind your back hand swapping of centre sheet systems, and finally, it can tack really, really fast..
Ullswater will be a fantastic place to sail- the inland lakes of the UK, especially Scotland, could occupy you for years. however, be aware of how big it really is- get in trouble and it might be a while before someone notices you and longer still before you get some help. Be aware in stronger winds that the surrounding high land can produce some vicious gusts from very odd directions. It's worthwhile going to a vantage point above the lake in a breeze, and watching the cats paws, the wind ripples on the water, to see how the breeze is behaving. Wind gust rolling down from high ground tend to hit the water and spread out like the fingers of a hand, giving boats only a few tens of metres apart, totally different wind directions.
finally, buy a chinagraph pencil and scribble down reminders for your launching sequence, including lower the plate!

Sorry for our delayed response, we have been out and about and just returned from an amazing day of sailing tuition!
This is such a thoughtful comment and a genuinely fascinating read, never worry about sharing the sailing wisdom with us we love to hear/read about it, thanks for taking the time to write it.
Lovely descriptions “cats paws” and “like the fingers of a hand” beginning to see the patterns in nature is something we are both intrigued with.
      Much appreciated and thanks again.

Sailing the Gull single handed I prefer rear main as I find myself sitting where the centre main block would be when going down wind or in light air.

We’re too new this to have a preference so it’s good to get some insight…

great video. . Glad you got the hang of the centre board - without them (not downwind) dinghy's are just big lumps of fibreglass. Glad you're saying REady About etc. I felt funny saying it out loud too! "Make it So" - laughed out loud at that! You're the Beau and Brandy of the UK. Centre-main all the time. What I'm training on you see. LIked video.
