Thinking about it, one overarching theme of modern movies, many of which are being perceived as nihilist, might actually just be showing characters holding principles of deontology or virtue ethics failing in spite of their rules or good character - demonstrating that the greatest harm can come from the best intentions - and realising they have to adopt a more consequentialist framework instead. Making choices that might be ethically required, even if they are not "moral" in a deontological sense.

The problem with consquentalis is that it is difficult to know beforehand the consequences, the problem of consequences is knowing what are the consequences of your behaviour. I prefer Stocism as my guide to behavior.

I can see how this applies to deontology but I dont see how it applies to virtue ethics.

I think the legal system has a consequentialist, utilitarian bias. The problem, as pointed out in the video, is that lawmakers are fooling themselves when they think they know what the consequences/effects of their laws are going to be.

I will say that a person can be deontologists, virtue ethicists and consequentialists matter for matter though, as context itself is another consistency that no ideology should prevent from discussion - that as a disagreement to the final point you made. I don't care how "illogical" that seems to some, anyway.

I would want lawmakers to be impartial. I think it is a problem that politicians are often beholden to the party ideology and of course, motivated by money. I think you can make law because it has a good outcome and because it good intent. Ideal all law making should be good intent and we need to hold politicians to acting in good faith all the time.

Is there a way in which there could be a link between the VW scandal and Deontology? If there is please enlighten me broadly... I have a a presentation coming up at school based on ethics and I will love to use this theory.
