Thank you! Your comment about how Max struggles with mental prayer was insightful. I’ve struggled greatly with mental prayer. I have a similar experience as Max. I’ve found playing some Gregorian Chant in the background helps keep my focus on God while in a state of (mental) prayer.
I have always struggled with my "minds eye" when reading a book (this phrase sounds new agey, but i promise it's not). Although I cannot see mental images, I can use my other senses when reading, like hearing waves or smelling and tasting cookies. When engaging in mental prayer, i focus on my other senses, imagining being hugged by Jesus. After some practice and focusing on attempting to see images, I can now vaguely see almost cartoon like images. Max might have tried this alreasy, especially since you guys are devout, but i thought i'd share since it works for me. I am a cradle catholic who left the faith and am waiting for the "right time" to make a complete reversion. I've been slowly reintroducing myself to the faith but am terrified to make that jump. Please pray for me
He belongs to the Cardinal Bernardin school of culturally accomodating Catholicism, which, generally speaking, has been a disaster for the Church in the United States. Unfortunately I don`t think Pope Francis understands Catholicism in the United States because he keeps on making some of the worst cardinals I can think about. Fortunately, your country still has many good bishops and archbishops. Considering that Cupich predecessor was the great Cardinal Francis George there is lots of hope that he will be replaced by a much better prelate.
