An Afternoon with Our Friend and Vinyl Record Mastering Engineer Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio

In our opinion, Kevin Gray is THEE standard for vinyl record mastering in the world. His ears, his uncanny ability to preserve artist expression, and side note his technical prowess lead him to hand building a vast majority of the equipment used at Cohearent Audio.
In this video you'll get some smokin' stories, hear some very unique tunes, and hopefully be able to tell how overwhelmed Mitch is by being in the space.
Kevin Gray is the mastering engineer for all of the Blue Note Records "Tone Poet" series. He works on this project with industry veteran Joe Harley. Together they remaster iconic Blue Note records from the original reel to reel tapes that were recorded by Rudy Van Gelder himself in Hackensack.
This Tone Poet series is wicked legit. Original tape recordings, mastered by Kevin Gray, pressed by RTI, and archival "Old Style" jackets by Stoughton Printing.

Kevin's mastering is second to none. From Fleetwood Mac Rumours (pressed at Pallas) reissue to the Blue Note Tone Poet series, his analogue sourced mastering makes it worth buying the reissues. He has done countless reissues and they are all the reference version of the release . It's interesting to see what he says about half speed mastering. The effect on the cutting of the vinyl being a negative makes you wonder whether to buy half speed masters. I would love to see Kevin work on some of the early to mid 80's Virgin Records releases by bands like Japan, Simple Minds and more. Andrew Hill's Black Fire - Blue Note Tone Poet is stunning. This is one of those Kevin Gray masters in the last while that really stands out for me. You get that full sound stage with front to back dispersion/imaging, the detail in the drum high hat and cymbals (drums overall really) is stunning. This also happens to be a great record as well. The Tone Poet series packaging often exceeds the original actually and I have had good luck with RTI so far, However, I realise that that Opitcal (Germany) is a notch better overall. The Beatles Mono on vinyl was pressed at Optical, outstanding quality.
