    Nathan, thanks for the great video. It's a good lesson I can take to heart, set clear goals and work backward, do the math to see what's required for the desired outcome. Maybe don't fly by the seat of my pants and see what happens like usual haha. You're wise in this decision to buy bees to grow. I think.., I Bought 25 last year in the fall and just keep hoping ive done enough growing and learning in the past few years that its not a futile endeavor. ( Every time i think about having bought more colonies I'm reminded of Bob's video where he talks about people buying lots of colonies, then he sees them 5 years later trying to sell good used equipment..). Thanks for the inspiration. Good luck this season in reaching your goal!

    Yeah got stung several times myself, have had a tick and now poison ivy and one apparently queenless hive or a poorly mated queen from last year puttering out and now 10 days of temps in only the 40's and below freezing at night. Ggrrr! First bee class of the season went well - learning up 10 more newbees.

    Not sure if you have heard about peppermint candy and you probably have. I tried it and it works. I bought some starburst peppermint and crushed it to a granular/powder, that way the bees cant carry it out as fast. Sprinkle it on top bars and in corners of box and see if this works for you it does work for me.

    What a comfort to buy bees from someone you know had taken good care of his bees. Will you be putting them in some new yards or filling up ones you already have? These new bees are carni x Caucasians? Seems like Bob doesn't put up with mean bees.

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    SHB: try the peppermint candies method! One peppermint on top of the frames, in 2 opposite corners. Just for the bottom box. Drives away the SHB like you wouldn't believe. Try it...

      @tonyandric4380 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@alhambraorchardapiary4882 If you go into each hive, this takes just seconds. How long does it take to unwrap 2 peppermint candies (like you get from Sonic)? Is there any other method that's faster?

    • @gunlinebees.3831
      @gunlinebees.3831 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@tonyandric4380 the peppermint candy is a big help, we done it and had good results. Since then we have started using peppermint extract and eucalyptus oil mix and that is far more superior in controlling hive beetles. We deal with infestations not just a few hive beetles.
      2oz bottle of peppermint extract
      0.5ml of eucalyptus oil
      Mix the eucalyptus oil in the peppermint extract and shake well. Apply with a syringe and a needle along the top rails and the box.
      If this is confusing, we have a short of doing the application.

    • @alhambraorchardapiary4882
      @alhambraorchardapiary4882 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @tonyandric4380 How long does it last though? I get into my hives, but not every week.

    • @gunlinebees.3831
      @gunlinebees.3831 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alhambraorchardapiary4882 we apply it about every 10 days due to the amount beetles we deal with but if you have low numbers every 2 weeks should be fine. Be liberal with it don't skimp, lay a good healthy bead on both sides all the way across. It doesn't take but a few seconds to run, you want it to soak into the wood.

    I’ve rarely had an issue just taking a nuc and putting it directly into a queenless hive queen and all. We’ve been seeing reports of swarms since end of February. Had a hive Friday(3/15) that was bearding. Upon inspection it had several swarm cells started. Ended up doing an artificial swarm and we’ll see what happens. I’ve been doing splits since the first week of March. Starting OA on those splits this week. Fingers crossed I get most of my queens back. If I don’t I’ll just plug a nuc in 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Best of luck on your growth goals for the year Nathan. With all due respect to ROB Manley, I would suggest that there are revenue opportunities available today that weren't there previously. Currently, I'm running about fifty colonies of my own, have five annual management contracts, and am making a fair living, working full time as a beekeeper, with potential to grow with my efficiency and creative revenue generation.

    With your high nuc loss do you think it could have been different if you had overwintered in deeps?
    I notice with your feeders they only had 8 frames, and I'm curious if 8 full deep frames would have worked better since they can hold more food.

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No I don’t think so. I overwintered some in single mediums and they did just fine. The ones I lost were all really small.

    • @researcherAmateur
      @researcherAmateur 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I overwinterd 10 in those jester (if that's a name).. that plastic cardboard 5 frames that you have to put together.. didn't touch or watch them all winter..since September. Went to see them a couple of weeks back.. 9 were about to explode, 1 was full of wax moths. They were pushed all together and had styrofoam over the top.. that's it. I think the key was that I didn't bother them in any way. They all had young queens and the winter wasn't very cold.

    Ha Nathan I for got your location, what is your state, I enjoyed your video I am still thinking about your last 1video, about coloney growth. I am in Virginia, our main flow starts in may but we do get some a little now and april, I have several hives ,hives that are 7 frames of capped brood, I am having a hard time understanding the chart you showed us, if the main flow is in may should I remove frames from them hives and give them to the hives with 3-5 frames of capped brood I am in honey only I do not want to split or sale bees. Thanks.

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m in TN. There are a lot of swarm management strategies. Pulling sealed brood away from colonies that are too big too early is one. Splitting is another. You’ll have to decide on your strategy.
