This plot twist could have been amazing if it was handled right. Instead of this trippy 4-D space thing that was never adequately explained, we could have found ourselves on a ruined and decadent version of Earth that had never developed faster than light travel. They couldn't figure out the physics to make it work, so civilization turned inward to create virtual worlds that human minds could enter and then create entirely new physics within. The "Eternal Sphere" was essentially the dream that humanity could never achieve in reality. The obvious follow up to this is that the computational power needed to make this universe a reality unto itself would also create beings that were self-aware, beings who would be capable of perceiving the true nature of their universe and possibly surpass their own creators, left to their own devices. There are hints in the story that "symbology" is essentially the manipulation of the Eternal Sphere's source code, though this is never explicitly stated in the game. Now you have Luther, the president of the company charged with developing and maintaining the Eternal Sphere as humanity's playground, suddenly realizing that certain civilizations within the artificial universe are actively manipulating the underlying source code and threatening to bring the whole house of cards tumbling down. How does he respond? Remember that these are beings who achieved more in their universe than their creators (humanity prime) achieved in theirs. From Luther's perspective, self-aware beings with the capacity to both perceive and govern the reality of their universe can only be a threat. This SHOULD have been the big reveal of Star Ocean 3. The whole thing was just badly executed on a narrative level.
Ironically, the game's ending actually makes sense if you look at it as the creations surpassing their creators. The fact that Fayt and company could take physical form in a universe completely separate from their own is a hint that the Eternal Sphere denizens had already surpassed their creators. Luther did not succeed in deleting the Eternal Sphere because it had already evolved beyond his capacity to do so.

I always felt like it worked because of something called Hegel’s “End of History”
In it, the proverbial “Progress of History” has ended and the Utopia is achieved in which death/ sadness/ pain/ etc. is stamped out and Mankind has become one.
But if you actually talk to the NPCs in Arkives, Gemmity, and Sphere 211… The End of History ended up just being a big boring silent suffering of the population. This is why only people who can MEANINGFULLY CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR SOCIETY work for a living within Theme Parks/ the Sphere 211 Game Studio/ Security or Police/ etc. essential positions…but everyone else just plays video games or goes to theme parks while never feeling fulfillment.
While I agree that it was executed poorly in the narrative, when you look at the “Meta” Narrative…it was a HUGE BALLSY F-U to the very company that they were attempting a merge with at the time (Squaresoft) since it was originally published by Enix in JP.
I believe that they meant this whole “4D Space” section to be a look at how things go once there’s nothing left to strive for and what kinds of people will willingly do nothing for themselves yet look for escapism stoop down to; how society in a Post-FTL Travel/Universe Mapping looks versus the colorful & cheerful world of Eternal Sphere…where conflict regularly occurs and you can be anyone else.
Plus, I was always under the impression that Symbology was something that exists in 4D Space and the Source Code itself was made using Symbology itself. That would explain a lot of things including how they even achieved fully-universal AGIs being able to meet them IN PERSON.

This is *EXACTLY* what turned me off on the second half of the story back in the old PS2 era.
I was so pumped up that we had angered the gods and they sent an executioner to erase life in the universe, and so the team embarked on a journey to enter the gates to the realm of gods in their desperate attempt to save all life and existence.
Upon arriving in the said realm, guess what made me fell off my seat after grueling countless hours of free grinding and dedicated gameplay, only to find out we're just game data?? Not to mention we get to meet the developers in physical form! Not even dot.Hack: GU went that far. It's almost like a kiddy-grade plot for a Digimon series.
But nuff said, that didn't stop me from playing and 100% the trophies and its content unlocked from it. The gameplay back on its days are addicting, but that plot twist...ugh!! That made me see all the games I've played from SO1 and SO2 seems like a joke of struggle and survival because of that insane turn of events.

My question is, what's the difference? Whether they are simply part of a simulation, or an actual universe made by gods, there is basically no difference. The fact that a simulation can simply be turned off isn't unique either. Gods that can create universes can probably destory them too. Destruction is easier than creation after all.
Personally, I always liked the plot twist. It's basically correlated with my belief that it's impossible to know if we are all simply a simulation and gods are the developers.

This game was notable for a having a pretty poor localization, but the redeeming aspect there is how lovingly they translated the Dictionary + Notes scattered throughout the game.
However, they didn’t even properly explain Fayt’s “Destruction Gene” and how it quite literally makes everyone in his vicinity unable to be fazed by the hopping of dimensions (and allows them to stay leveled up + use their abilities/symbols in 4D Space). Had they done a better job at explaining the mechanics of the “plot twist”, people would’ve been a lot nicer to it and got what they were going for. After having played this since it came out and studied the game’s story/lore + even the game’s mechanics, I can assure you that a lot of foreshadowing and subtle hints towards said Plot Twist were present even from when the game begins in the hotel 🤷🏽‍♂️

And after this game I could never bring myself to play a Star Ocean game again. Meanwhile, Flad brought a bunch of cosplay fanatics home.
I always liked that the in-game database hinted that the Milky Way survivors were going to make a final stand at Lezonia. Kind of poetic.
Oh also that the whole thing becomes Tri-Ace mocking Squaresoft. That always amuses me.

      How is it poetic?

    • @specialnewb9821
      @specialnewb9821 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@music79075 Because Star Ocean 1 opened with a war between Earth and Lezonia. After SO2, Earth used the Nedian tech Claude brought back to make it's previous importance as a wormhole nexus obsolete. Now at the end of the universe all the survivors from Earth (and the other worlds) are going to make their last stand there making the planet important again, this time as a hero instead of a villain. It kind of brings things in the SO universe full circle.

@titan-1802 More evidence supports an intelligent designer. Logic states if there's an infinite number of universes, There will be one with the creator of it allwith power over all. At somoe point this being WILL be made by this logic. Infinite is infinite and an infinite number of universes with an infinite number of outcomes will one day breed a god and a devil. Your point is moot there. Another logic statement says either nothing happens when you die or something happens. You cease to exist or continue to exist. If you dont, then you have nothing to worry about as nothing matters in the end. If you do continue to exist, There will be some guy in charge because an infinite number of universes means this WILL hppen. NEXT VICTIM!!!!

@@titan-1802 not really. Its the logic dude. Immagine a question posed by a croc. He snags your kid and tells you he will give him back if you can tell him what he will do. If you get it wrong, the croc eats him. You say, you will not bring my son back. The croc has a paradox now...if he does bring him back, he will have to eat him...but that in turn means he wont bring him back. And thus the croc is now backed into a logic corner. No matter what he does, he will have to return the son alive...in the end, you exist after death or you dont. If you dont...you don't need to worry about being wrong...if you are wrong, youre screwed. Might as well believe in the physical dude who died to premote an idea....Jesus is the freedom from religion.

I hate it too, but looking back there were tiny hints in Star Ocean 2. I forget what the bigger one was.. but what did stick with me, even before playing this game, was Gabriel starting the last battle telling us "I'm erasing you.." Not killing, not destroying, erasing, just like the executioners do in this game.
