I found that haul amazing because it was mostly things I haven't seen before. Most not terribly exciting, but still, it *is* exciting to see a haul that is just so full of books I would have to research!
I look forward to your reviews and my further education.

Then its time to start, I think. I am 32 and started some years ago and I realized that A LOT of the stories today just copy and or rewrite the stuff from the golden ages.

Slant was wild... early 'nanotech is magic!' stuff, and separately, what I swear is the inspiration for the 'torment nexus' meme, a device called a 'hell crown' that used mind-machine interface to actively undermine your means of coping with pain... IIRC... an alarming effing idea.

Got some great ones with some fantastic covers! I love your book hauls because we have such similar taste and I vicariously get the same fix I normally get when I have a good one.
I had a few great books hauls over Christmas vacation. Got several great Ace Doubles, DAW paperbacks, The Survivors(aka Space Prison), some Jack Vance, Murray Leinster, Poul Anderson, Robert Silverberg, John Brunner, "Bow Down to Nul" by Aldis, "Who Goes There?" by Bob Shaw, and "Davy" by Edgar Pangborn, which I've been looking out for for awhile. Happy hunting.

A bunch of those I read, and a couple, the Niven and The Centauri device i have and a few of the covers seem familiar. Looks a lot like one my old book shelves. Interesting to see the Lichtenberg, I always enjoyed the House of Zeor and thought it was an interesting concept.

    F. Paul Wilson has written some conventional SF, earlier in his career. Usually published in Analog. Often in a common future ("the LaNague League.). I remember reading Dydeetown World as a novella somewhere, but I don't remember what it was in. (I suspect I may misremember this.) What I'm seeing from the description on Amazon makes me thing that was expanded out to (a relatively short) novel length.
Mack Reynolds & Dean Ing. Ing completed some of Reynolds' stuff for publication after his death, IRRC.
Not a lot in this that I've read before (or have interest in reading, sad to say).

Mike Resnick's Ivory. Resnick wrote what for me was the first science fiction series I'd seen centered on African cultures rather than Western ones, and Ivory was part of one of those. It's a bunch of vignettes following some tusks through history. I thought it was OK, though I think it was nominated for a Hugo or Nebula. I don't think it's your sort of book but who knows. On a personal note, I met him a couple times and he was a genuinely nice guy. He raised collies and my parents bought one from him and his wife a long, long time ago. She was the best.

Sorry, not trying to be snarky but at this point it's like he's trying to compete with Richard Powers for a genre cover body count!
Seriously, he bumped sci-fi and fantasy covers up to a new level, a bunch of artists got their chance because in the beginning they were like Michael Whelan knockoffs. He did so many amazing paintings for so many covers that I would genuinely say get one of his art books and just page through it "Works of Wonder." "Wonderworks" as well. I know coffee table art books in an age when you can just look at the pictures online seems silly but seriously the art is amazing and most of his cover paintings were super large so there's just so much subtlety and detail that the A format covers don't always capture.
      And he's a swell guy.
To give you a more direct answer to your question, aside from countless singletons, add a number of record albums, he did iconic covers for a number of series that were insanely popular like :
      Elric,
      Dragonriders of Pern,
      A bunch of Heinleins,
      A bunch of Asimov's;:
      (Robots, and Foundation series),
      The Dark Tower series,
Seriously if you flip through one of his art books it's like building A Greatest Hits TBR.
And for a guy who's prolific he actually illustrates scenes from the books or comes up with a composite of a character and a mood from the book.

That Frayn made me sit up and take notice- it's always been jacketed as a mainstream novel over here, as he has a huge reputation in Britain, though it is SF. Never seen a US copy. Geston is doomy and dark and worth a read - at least 'Lords...' and its sequel are. Continue to feel for you re the neck. I took a fall and broke my wrist last week, now shooting vids while splinted- oh joy.

I saw the Martin Caidin book there he also wrote excellent non fiction. Definitely recommend A Torch To The Enemy, it's about the B-29 incendiary raids over Tokyo 1945.

    • @moonlight01011
      @moonlight01011 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

My mom is Japanese. She was 5-years old during those incendiary raids. She remembers sheltering with her family in a cramped space under the house during one raid, and then the space got unbearably hot as the house was on fire, so they fled the house. When they were living in another city, they were again sheltering during another raid. As they huddled in the hole under the house, they could hear a loud whistling sound getting louder and louder until a thud shook the ground. When they emerged from the shelter, the house was intact, but next to the house was an unexploded bomb. My mom remembers seeing yellow or greenish liquid oozing from the bomb. Because of her experience hiding in cramped spaces during those raids, my mom, to this day, gets anxious in small, enclosed places like elevators, closets, etc. When the war ended, my mom and her sisters were starving. She remembers the kindness of the American soldiers and marines who gave them food. In the early 1960's, she married my dad, a US Marine. Anyway, thank you for the recommendation; I'll find a copy of A Torch To The Enemy to read.

I believe the Damon Knight book, The Observers, is a sequel to the novel called CV. I only read CV, and it was a decent read.
Martin Caidin wrote a novel called Cyborg, which inspired The Six Million Dollar Man TV show, way back when. I never read Cyborg…but I found Beamriders! to be a long, dull slog, where not much happened.
Would you believe I found Cyberbooks to be an entertaining and somewhat action-oriented SF book - a good one from Bova. However, I have no idea how close to our reality his version of ‘cyber book’ technology was - it’s simply been too long for me to say anything like “he predicted e-books”, etc.. On the other hand, who knew a great SF/Crime plot could be attached to new book technology (as envisioned at that time). I recall quite a fast-paced, even suspenseful SF Thriller…but where there’s money to be made from new technology, even bookworm money, of course the criminals want to step in and cash in… That’s what I recall about the book, anyway.
Any time anyone holds up something with Jack Williamson’s name on it, it’s a good bet I’ve read it. I loved The Singers of Time, maybe my favourite experience with Pohl and Williamson…but I have to say I hated The Silicon Dagger. But I wish you would read it! I do. The Silicon Dagger is political SF, and I would be interested in your reaction. Or, there’s The Singers of Time…
I absolutely loved: Neverness, Rendezvous with Rama, and Alas, Babylon. I also recommend Aftermath by Sheffield, though I’m sure there’s a sequel I never got to - Star Fire, Star something? Uh, not sure.
The Night Face was okay, very quick, I think it was originally called Let the Spacemen Beware!, or something. I think Skyfall was a bit draggy…real-world, ponderous, tech-heavy SF full of out of date Cold War politics…again, memories are hazy, hopefully not totally unreliable. I enjoyed Bear’s Queen of Angels, but found it just a wee bit of a strain to stay interested; Bear has had this effect on me a few times.
