'He Gets Us': The Good, the Bad & the Unbiblical | Ep 753

  • Today we're discussing the 'He Gets Us' campaign, as promised! The $100 million advertising campaign seeks to promote Jesus and Christianity through TV spots in prime time, billboards, and social media feeds. These ads portray Jesus as a refugee, an activist, and an influencer, among other characteristics, and aim to communicate his relatability to modern problems (ultimately leading people to the "He Gets Us" site). Two of these ads ran in last night's Super Bowl and made big waves among Christians and non-Christians. One of the problems with the campaign is its claims about Jesus, which are not entirely accurate and/or are missing important context. The campaign does not align with any specific denomination or doctrine, but rather seeks to partner with churches and organizations who can use its resources for outreach. We discuss the major concerns of the campaign, but also highlight some of the good that can come from it. It's exciting to see a campaign like "He Gets Us" put big money behind helping people connect with Jesus, and we've already heard good stories of people hearing the gospel, but we can still remain wary of some of the campaign's messages that lack context and historical accuracy.

True, but people still need to repent, accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, and live according to God's commandment and biblical law. So far, like the campaign to go after our young people...but I'll puke if I start hearing "Jesus gets us" and accepts your identifying as a fruit-loop and not one of the two sexes (birth male or female) , he gets how people support baby murder (abortion), and he gets people not committing to live by God's commandments and biblical law. The jury is still out on the Jesus gets us campaign...but there is hope. Cheers.

I just tuned in to the Super Bowl at the end and saw one commercial. It said something like "Jesus forgives the people we hate..." and I was like "I don't hate anyone. Who is the we? Speak for yourself." Christians are not suppose to hate anyone. So saying "we" just made it seem like Christians are just of the same breed as the world. "We" made it feel like all of us hate a certain segment of people. They could have done very much better than a bland ad like that was my honest feeling. Don't make it seem like Christians are just as much a part of the "We" as everyone else when it comes to hating others.

I was concerned myself and reached out to them after searching their website for the main point to their campaign (I was hoping it was salvation but that was scarcely found, it was hardly a mention). I think if they go through the trouble of ALL of this (if it is just a hook) then the MAIN point should be loud on clear once they’ve gotten to the website. The gospel truth of Salvation is what’s important here. The saving of souls for eternity, not just someone to relate to while down here.

I recently watched an old sermon by Voddie Baucham and he said that many Evangelicals and the media portray Jesus as a sissified man. I strongly agree. That "He gets us" is pretty much that. Portraying Jesus as someone He never was. If Jesus is not God in the flesh then it's better to not even believe in Him.
Those ads keep showing up to me too much, even though I blocked them lol
Evangelicals are the main people who help refugees in the US. I remember that in a local FB group, someone was asking for information for a refugee family and I told them about a Christian non-profit that was helping Afghan refugees, the person just answered "I prefer no church is involved". Yeah. Matthew 10:22 is something I prefer to be recognized for.

Thanks for your strength with the Christian World View. I'm a Christ Follower who belongs to a Southern Baptist Church which doesn't follow the "Reformed" position, but I love your perspective anyway. Seems to me that all the best comments, from modern and past Evangelical Preachers, are coming from the Reformed perspective. My Three favorite Preachers are Dr. David Jeremiah - Shadow Mountain Community Church, El Cajon California, Jack Hibbs - Calvary Chapel, Chino Hills California & Greg Laurie - Harvest Christian, Riverside California. Also, my own Pastor, Randy Harling - Summerville Baptist, Summerville South Carolina. All of these men can be heard on TH-cam channels.

@@lisaengel5243 That would be good, but I think he is still overseas as of now. I will say this: Any true revival will begin with, and be sustained by, the Bible. Expository preaching and teaching is God's primary means of conveying truth that leads to repentance, sanctification, and godliness -- none of which has anything to do with raising hands, singing, or weeping. From what I've seen, what is taking place at Asbury is based on emotionalism.
If anyone can show me in the NT epistles where, for example, a sermon by Paul led to people confessing sin, singing, praying, and "forming a deeper connection to God," I'd like to see it. What "revival" looks like in the Bible is a return to the Bible, obedience to God, maturity and growth in the knowledge of God. Anyone can sing songs and cry; in fact, I did that as an unbeliever.

People may say your tone is wrong, but I think you understand us better than a lot of older church leaders. We don't want to be gaslit and have people only share the things they believe with us that they think we want to hear. We don't want to be led to believe we belong at churches only to find out later that they were never clear about what certain roles secretly require of people. Be clear and honest with us about what you really believe and think. Don't try to shape shift into what you think people want you to be.

The verses you cited summed up perfectly our relationship with Christ - "I must decrease so he can increase." Let's get OUT of ourselves in this ME ME ME society and learn that it's about JESUS and NOT about us.
