I learned to type on an old Underwood and when my mom treated herself to a new electric typewriter I kept hitting the keys too hard and wound up with extra letters. I actually dug out the old one from storage to use for an essay because I couldn't adjust enough before it was due.
I was 15 in 1980. How lucky we were to grow up in that decade. Thank you for the great memories. So glad to know so many others are nostalgic for them also!

I had those molds from my grandma, a fish shaped one and a ring mold. I think I gave them to someone because I don't have them anymore. I still have a copper plate depicting a cabin in the woods on my wall.

My set of world book encyclopedias is 96 years old, published 1928 in fantastic condition & complete! Yes, I do often use them to find historical information. Also, still use macrame hangers for plants on porch in summer time.
Wow macrame, I remember in elementary school they showed us how to make those plant hangers. And my Mom went to the store around the corner they sold all the items needed for that. It was big in the 70s as well.

Did they say museum or brothel? It sounds like you were getting down and dirty for decades over there. You little minx you. Lol. You know those doll toilet paper covers, did people buy those or did Grandmas just make them? I always assumed old ladies made those when I was a kid because I always saw them at old people's houses. I haven't seen one of those for years but remember them vividly.

I mainly eat Cheerios when I have cereal, but I always keep one "fun" cereal around for nostalgia's sake. Nothing like a bowl of Trix or Cinnamon Toast Crunch to make you feel like a kid again!
They were probably around in the 50s as well. I think his point is they were still seen around in the 80s, and then fell out of fashion, like so much of the other stuff.
I switched back to the 12 cup coffee maker and put away my Keurig. It's cheaper and better for the environment. The coffee tastes better and the coffee grounds can be composted.
Still have my parent's slide projector from the late 60's along with their electric typewriter from the same era. First TV in my room was in fact B&W! Still have a coffee maker (just not one from the 80's) and I miss my C64 so much it hurts. I DID manage to restore my Atari 2600 to working condition though, although because I don't have the adapter it's like playing on a billboard :D
In the collectables category, I remember men's cologne bottles were big. My Dad had a collection of them shaped like cars, animals, etc. Cheap obnoxious smelling cologne in a displayable bottle was a big Fathers Day - birthday - or Christmas gift for Dads and Uncles.
Those were Avon bottles. Housewives during the 70s and 80s always had a side gig, hosting Avon parties to sell the obnoxious perfumes and colognes to their friends. 😀
Sounds like avon, bottles were once highly collectible, some very expensive. There was even an avon bottle price guide book. Avon bottles are now almost worthless!
My parents got one as a wedding present and it was some goddess with luscious long hair wrapped around her curves and the plastic greenery inside with her, it had lighting on the strings the oil slid down. I use to stare at it as dad would rock my asleep. I liked it, still do. If I could buy one I’d do it. Mom hated it cuz of the dust collection against the oil strands.
Thinking about clocks from around that time, I remember the "digital" clocks that had numbers on the little square plastic flaps that would flip down as the wheel inside turned.
Those were really popular on alarm clocks. I never had one but I do remember some of my family having them and I was fascinated by them. Thank you for watching killrmillr!
@@RhettyforHistoryI had one but was glad when I got a digital clock radio to wake up to music with. Regular alarms used to scare the s**t out of me when they went off! 🫨
Thank God my Dad always purchased white TP! I mean he raised me my entire life but we never had colored TP. I was just getting up there - in highschool - but still remember a lot of these things in other people's homes. Some carried over from the 70s in our house, like those roosters you hung on the kitchen walls. And, I'm blessed enough to have my Dad's mantle clocks...the ones you have to wind up with a one pound key! Priceless to me! I love these Saturday morning strolls down memory lane! Thank you so much!✌️👍❤️
I found the version of the Betty Crocker Cookybook my mother had at a used bookstore but passed it up. I know I'll find it again but I regret not just grabbing it that day.
Same here, I'm happy that we were able to experience those days growing up but sad they are gone. Some of my best memories of my life were from those times. Miss them now more than ever before.
I just refurbished my 1980 Bunn coffee maker. It's stainless steel and aluminum, and has a tank that keeps water at 200° for faster brewing. I remember that it cost $110, which was a lot back then. I take my coffee seriously!
Many people still have traditional coffee makers. I don't even drink coffee and I've got one! Why? Because my MIL drinks coffee so if she ever wants some when she's here, I've got her covered. Plus, coffee grounds are awesome for the garden.
About 3 years ago, I found a complete in box Breville/Melitta coffee maker in a goodwill shop which was the top of the line model with green LED clock and automatic timer. The original receipt was still in the box dated 1983 and it also had a free box of coffee filters that came with it. I use it every time I make coffee because it's awesome and there's nothing better than drip coffee!
I remember those tiny figurines that came in the tea bag box, I think it was Lipton. I always got excited when my grandma would open a new box to make sun tea and I got to see which animal was in there 😊
Looking back, I'm so glad we didn't have the internet and streaming back then. I would've missed out on a lot of great classic television and many books as well.
I kind of remember the colored toilet paper, but I remember Kleenex tissues coming in different colors, too. We had the cassette and VHS storage drawers that were in the pictures. We had plenty of things with geese on them because my grandma was really into crafting. We still use the coat rack. I know several people who have regular coffee makers, our house included. I don't think those are a thing of the past. Walk down the coffee aisle. It's not all k-cups.
Yeah, coffee makers like that are still quite common. Far more economical than the alternatives, that's for sure! My BFF had a kitchen full of geese/ducks. It was various shades of buttercup/lemonade yellow with blue and white accents, plus the geese/ducks. We had the cassette holder doohickeys, too. Never used them, though. They were full but we just...never listened to the tapes.
_Store-bought_ wall sconces? WTH?! You were supposed to make those hideous things in Jr. high woodshop, then give them to your parents as gifts so they would feel obligated to hang them up visible in the house like everybody else, lol. I made about 3 of them throughout the 80's. Two of them had that cheap, too much stain soaked into cheap pine grains-look that made the scone look just that much hideous. But they had candle holder glass slots in them so that made up for it. The last one I made in '88 I actually bought decent stain for instead of the cheap stuff they had laying around the woodshop storage, took my time staining it and finished it off with a nice mirror and routed in our family name in it(which ended up looking like it was scarred in with a woodburner haha). Yeah so, boo on store-bought ugly wall sconces.
Oh and God help you if you ever got pinched by the hinges on those lounge chairs! Annoying that you had to fold them completely back to the center position to change the angle again. 😂
I remember doing a project in high school around ‘86 taking all the pictures with slide film to do a presentation, what a pain to load all the slides in the correct order! Still loved the ‘80’s what an amazing time it was.
My mother used to crochet them, and sold them (with the dolls) at church flea markets and school sales along with other crochet items (baby blankets etc).
I remember goose items, but then at the time we had pet geese. Early 90s. I got a bunch of those wood blank geese and painted them to look like each of our pet geese. My mom was the one who wanted geese, wonder if the goose trend played a role? They were all nice geese unless there was a gosling around. They did breed.
I remember being so proud that I had an after school job at our local mall. It was the place everyone wanted to work because all of the teens hung out at the mall. I used my employee discount to buy Swatch watches and designer jeans.
Oh my goodness what wonderful memories. I think just about everyone’s grandmother had those doll toilet roll covers. 😁 I miss my grandparents, my parents and those wonderful times. Thank you Rhett. ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺
My grandmother on my dads side had a couple in each of her bathrooms as well as some facial tissue covers she knitted. There were all sorts of knitted things in her house. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories Jodie!
I remember, very happily, some of those items ... I still have some of those crocheted items that my Mum made in the 80s! And I remember those frosted glass animals, but I don't remember them looking so angry! LOL!
I remember participating in the public library's summer reading program in the town I grew up in. If the kids in the program read enough books, the library would reward us by giving us medals, then closing down for a couple of hours on a specific day, blocking out the windows and showing a movie via a film projector and projection screen. This was at a time when VCRs were still new and not many people could afford them (especially libraries). So they had the guy who ran the projector at the local movie theater come in to show one of the kid-friendly films out at the time. For bookworms and film nerds like me, this was something we looked forward to every summer!
I loved summer reading! My mom was a librarian in our town too, so when I was old enough, I volunteered to run the projector for the kids' weekend movies during the summer. Great times!
@@ashextraordinaire Oh how fun! It was such a blast back in those days! In the early 90s a new library director was brought on and she took the summer reading program way beyond what it was. She added in a summer theatre program, talent shows, medallion hunt for the town's annual summer festival, movies in the park, block parties with live music, etc. I mean don't me wrong, it was incredibly fun, but the simplicity of the summer reading program during the 80s felt more special. It was smaller, less chaotic and was based more on reading. I did participate in the extreme version of the reading program, but yeah just not the same. The librarian who was there in the 80s is still around and I run into her ever-so-often. She always gives me the biggest hug and we have lovely conversations. Love her!
That sounds like a great incentive to get kids to read. We didn't have anything like that. Only thing we had was the Pizza Hut reading program. Thank you for watching and sharing some memories with us.
@@RhettyforHistory Oh we had that, too! It's just that the public library where I grew up wasn't like other libraries back in those days. For instance you weren't required to be quiet. The librarian never once shushed you. She did kick you out if you were being overly obnoxious or bullying people, though. Actually it was quite the popular place to hang out all year round and for all ages. They had an amazing children's section with a creative arts area. So if you were an artistic person, like I was, you could spend the day in that section painting and drawing on top of reading. It was so much fun! The house I grew up in was literally right next to the library, so as you can imagine, I was there every single day lol.
I first learned to type on a manual typewriter then I learned on the electric one. I remember changing the ribbon used to be such a pain. 😊 I really enjoy your channel & going back in time remembering. Thank you. 😊
I loved the 80's..... miss them soooooo much..... parents, grand parents, aunts and uncles were still around to make the get togethers so wonderful 💖❤💗😊... and I was 20 - 30 something.... oh the memories..... to be young again❤
I was 12 in 1980 so I grew up in the best decade, music,MTV, roller skating, having Buck knives on our belts, gun racks in our trucks, the Pledge of Allegiance every morning, smoking areas at school for students, and a whole lot more fun times!!!
My family still have all those items from the cassette and VCR and the bathroom dolls rolls & those glasses and plates . Thanks for sharing all those memories I love it puts a smile on my face thanks once again !!!!❤
It feels as though you've raided my childhood home and that of my grandparents! Every single thing you pointed out from the colored toilet paper (totally forgot about that one), to the dinner plates with the white geese, to the fancy clock with spinning orbs, to the old black/white spare tv down in the basement. Only thing missing in this video was the He-Man/Transformers themed bed-tents. Those things were so cool, lol 😂
I loved my Mr. Coffee spacemaker. It was the best! 😊 Growing up we only had a percolator. Several years ago I bought another percolator. I was surprised anyone still made them. Best coffee ever especially when camping!
We still use ours but there are a whole lot of coffee shops popping up with no shortage of lines. A lot of the younger coffee drinkers love the K-Cups too. Thank you for watching!
I refuse to use a Keurig - I have two Mr. Coffee type coffee maskers (Autodrip) and I have two percolators (electric) that I use. Remember at the grocery store, you had to choose the right coffee? The cans of Maxwell House said Autodrip or Percolator on the top.
Thanks for Sharing!!! I remember my Mom had a thing for the ducks with the blue ribbon around their neck! She even did our bathroom in that theme! Always had the matching blue toilet paper too! Lol!
I was thinking about the colored toilet paper not to long ago! We really did live in a great time of life. I wish I could go back to life being simple again! Thank you for the memories!! ❤
It’s bad enough watching home improvement shows, where they point out “outdated” stuff, and things they hate, which I still have. Now comes along your clip, and tries to double down, trying to make me feel old. Well, atleast you left out the Lava Lamp! More than held the items you showed, I have. And still use today.
Great video. Your channel is one of my favorites. Keep up the good work. One thing I recall worth mentioning is the hanging jute owl decorations. I miss those.
Once again you have successfully taken me back to my childhood with great love and care...😊 I remember every one of those items, especially when you showed the same exact Transformers blanket I had. Thank you for the video my friend. We 80's kids all gotta stick together in this crazy time we're in.
I was 9 years old in 1980. Perfect age to experience the best decade in history. The music, tv shows, movies, candy and snacks, the mall and arcades. Everything was better!
This past Christmas, my mom and I were going through her and my grandma's recipe boxes and cookbooks this past Christmas. Things like that are interesting, special, and a great way to spark stories and conversations. I loved the slide projector! That was a cool way to view photos. I had Care Bear sheets! Thanks for the great video and memories! And don't call me Shirley. (3:15)
I'm 57 and still use the modern version Mr. Coffee . Fill it up everyday to the 8 cup line with Folgers Classic Blend . Have used a Mr Coffee my entire adult life .
Love your vids. Always brings back so many memories. Thank you. Keep them coming 👍. I think one of the things I don't see anymore is those folding card tables. Seems like everyone had at least one.
Haha!!! I remember the Glade scented tp roller. My mom bought one and my dad thought they were stupid. So that roller became our permanent roller well after the beads disappeared.
No! But I remember we had a giraffe that would drink water. Its head would come down, drink water then go back up all on its own and it would do this over and over. LOL
Speaking of FLA. How about all the shell stuff. Big glass ginger jars filled with shells turned into lamps. Picture frames, mirrors, jewelry boxes. All made with shells
Great video! My mom still has recipes that are hand written from my Great-Grandmother and Grand mother. Every item on this video we either owned or some one we knew had. We still have a clock in our kitchen. The 80's were the best of times. I honestly believe it was the last great era. Love your channel Rhetty!
Another popular style dish were the old Corelle dishes with either brown patterned butterflies or dark blue leaves and flowers along with other patterns of that time period.
Oh, the nostalgia! The brown butterfly pattern was called Butterfly Gold and debuted in 1970. My gramma had the entire set. My mother had the blue flower pattern, called Morning Blue, and it came out in the early 80s. I inherited Abundance (90s) from my BFFs mom a few years ago, including the matching Corningware baking dishes, gravy boat, S&P shakers, placemats, etc. I also have (inherited from my mother) several pieces from the Corningware Spice of Life (70s) baking dish set.
We definitely had one style of corelle in the brown and then the neighbors had a slightly different style. Thank you for watching and sharing another item.
@katie7748 my grandparents used to have the gold butterfly and now my aunt and uncle has that set, we used to have the dark blue set and then later bought the light blue flowers set, now we have a square set.
LOTS of those old things, including Pyrex, Tupperware, and Corelle, plus Fisher Price and any glassware from FF places, is SERIOUSLY loaded with lead, cadmium, and arsenic. I mean, off the charts high. If 90 is the safe threshold, some of those items might have HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of ppm, I think they measure it in. Kids, especially, shouldn't be handling this stuff, much less EATING from it.
I remember in Brownies, Girl Scouts, or maybe both we made carnations out of colored tissues and green pipe cleaners. My parents still have quite a bit of the things shown in this video. Most of them are just collecting dust in the corners.☺️ This took me back down memory lane! Thanks for the ride!💜🥰🧳🛣️
All I can say is, going to the mall was far more enjoyable when I was little growing up in the late 80's than it is now. It was an even better experience for me in the 90's when I was older as that was most of my childhood. Getting to go to the mall come Saturday was a treat for us. After getting to watch Saturday Morning Cartoons of course. :)
Back in the '80s you couldn't do much with computers like you can today. All you could do was a few games, word processing, and spreadsheet. Windows 3.11 didn't come out until 1993
Love to see these kinds of videos. I still have a coffee maker that makes a full pot and I set it up at night time to be ready for me in the morning. Oh do I remember those big cassette boxes.
The 80's were that magical in between time where things were changing from the way it had been for hundreds of years, but weren't quite to the modern era. It was a fun time to be alive.
I had forgotten about some of these, like the colored toilet paper, which we never had because my parents thought it was ridiculous - they were right! I remember when I got my first electric typewriter, it was an amazing technological advancement! It was a huge step up from writing college papers on a mechanical typewriter and seemed like magic!
One of my aunts still had colored TP in her bathroom as late as the early 2000's. No idea where she was getting it, unless she had massively stocked up at some point in the eighties.
Oh my gosh! So many of these things I actually owned but had totally forgotten about! One thing I remember is that my kids had and loved the scented pens, pencils and erasers that were popular then. Thank you for reviving those happy memories!
I still have my Teddy Ruxpin. I do not think that he works anymore. I keep him because it was one of my most favorite Christmas presents from my Father.

They were definitely around for decades. Thank you for watching!
Me too, and even then they usually in older peoples houses 🤷🏻♀️
Anyone remember the Souvenir Tea Spoon Displays? Go on holiday, buy the spoon, and display it proudly in the wood display box.
I switched back to the 12 cup coffee maker and put away my Keurig. It's cheaper and better for the environment. The coffee tastes better and the coffee grounds can be composted.
Thank you for watching and sharing what you like Linda!
Don't forget the digital clock/radios we all used to wake up to early in the morning so we could get to school or work on time.
Yes! Woke me up every morning!
Yes, then we were late if there was a power outage!
I still have one of those. I don't use it to wake up but it is one of several clocks I have in my bedroom including an analog one on the wall.
Still have mine
I still have mine from 1985!!. It works!
I still have my recipe box, slide projector , my big coffee maker and my C64
Oh I forgot I still use them
I still use a coffee pot every morning. I really want to get the old fashioned perk kettle that sits on the stove!!
My dad had a VIC-20 when I was little. I wish he had kept it.
1980s forever. Have yourself buried with them like an Egyptian Pharaoh.
I remember that Avon had a lot of those colognes in the 80's. My mother and Aunt had some of the perfumes.
Avon ladies perfume bottles as well.
Sounds like avon, bottles were once highly collectible, some very expensive. There was even an avon bottle price guide book. Avon bottles are now almost worthless!
Avon definitely had quite a collection of different ones. Thank you for watching vinnieboombatzmd3508!
I miss my grandma's oil rain lamp. They had cherubs in the middle and drops of oil dripped down. Loved this video.
Those were really cool lamps and I could stare at them for hours. Thank you for watching Julie!
My husband and I found one of those lamps piled in someone's trash. And it worked! We ended up selling it for $50, big regret selling it.
@@wandasays5438 That is so cool that it worked! They are expensive bc you can only get the old ones. Hope you come across another one day!
😂 yes!!
Thinking about clocks from around that time, I remember the "digital" clocks that had numbers on the little square plastic flaps that would flip down as the wheel inside turned.
Yep and when you were in bed at night trying to fall asleep you could literally hear "time passing away"!!!
Thank you so much!✌️👍❤️
We had a Seth Thomas wall clock in the kitchen. What I loved were the grandfather clocks in friends homes
You're welcome Jen0714! Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories!
I still have my mom's Betty Crocker cookbook!
I found the version of the Betty Crocker Cookybook my mother had at a used bookstore but passed it up. I know I'll find it again but I regret not just grabbing it that day.
Thank you for watching and sharing what you still have Joe!
I have our telephone that was on my parent's nightstand. It still works! Such a comfortable handset against the ear.
Classic!!
See James Illeks. He had a book on that, plus Interior Desecrations:Hideous Homes of the Horrible 70s.
These videos always make me, both happy 😄 and sad 😢 at the same time. I want to go back 😭❤️
Thank you for watching wendygore2709!
Same here, I'm happy that we were able to experience those days growing up but sad they are gone. Some of my best memories of my life were from those times. Miss them now more than ever before.
Same here…..
The word nostalgia comes from the Greek…. One loose translation of the word is “tasty pain”.
The hell with Keurig. I still have an old skool coffee maker…
Oddly enough some stores still sell coffee makers. I bought a new one from my local Target the other day.
@@AaronLevine-t3j It's not odd at all, really.

What a find! Drives me nuts that everyone uses pods now -- even my boomer dad. I'll stick with my drip coffee!

I was a kid in the '60s and loved it. I was in high school in the '70s.
I graduated in 76. At a school in Marsing,Idaho..my first job was in the United States Army 🪖🇺🇲👍
Me too
Looking back, I'm so glad we didn't have the internet and streaming back then.
Certainly remember the tissues coming in different shades
Yeah, coffee makers like that are still quite common. Far more economical than the alternatives, that's for sure!
My BFF had a kitchen full of geese/ducks. It was various shades of buttercup/lemonade yellow with blue and white accents, plus the geese/ducks.
We had the cassette holder doohickeys, too. Never used them, though. They were full but we just...never listened to the tapes.
You're right about the facial tissues coming in different colors too. Thank you for watching and sharing what you have had.
I fondly remember the huge stereo systems with massive speakers. Turntable on top, radio, and cassette player.❤
My record player cassette and big speakers continue to work as good as new . Cassette player and cd player in my car works as new .
I still have stereo components, a turntable, and a massive collection of vinyl to go with it!
Separate components are still the way to go. You'll neved get serious sound or volume on something small.
Yes the doll toilet roll cover.never understood it either but it brings back memories😊
I’d guess it was to hide your spare roll of TP. We never had those!!

Seemed like everyone's grandparents had them back then.
Born in ‘75! Childhood in the 80s was feral and EPIC! ❤
YES!!! I was born March 31, 1975...I believe we lived through the BEST decades...80s, and 90s....
The spring riding rocking horse was one of my favorites back in the 80's when i was a kid.
I had one of those too! My mother found it at a rummage lol
Those were a lot of fun. Thank you for watching raidenmk4473!
I had one in the 60s. Loved it! ❤
Who remembers those hideous wall sconces and giant picture frame clocks from Home Interiors? My mom hosted those parties at least once a month.
Thank you for watching and sharing a couple other items matchstickdesignco!
I remember those parties! Lol
They had some cute stuff.
Still have the box and my mom's Recipes displayed in my kitchen and use and always will. Makes the kitchen more home...

Remember collectible glasses sets from McDonalds, etc. A new one for each week. They were nice glasses too!

Thank you for sharing your amazing story and great memories of that time. I miss them now more than ever before.

I still have mine!
Most of them are just collecting dust in the corners.☺️
