I just love how the song is so serious, but beautiful at the same time. Then at the end of the song, gavroche comes in and is like "that inspector thinks he's something..."
    I laugh every time.
    I don't know. I love Russell Crowe's acting, but I love Norm's voice... They're both so fabulous!

One of the best Javert's that I have ever seen/heard!

My favourite Javert is Norm Lewis. Closely followed by Philip Quast. But I love the authority and royalty found in Lewis' voice. It booms like a religious preacher so I believe it works better with his character when he sings to God. By pure influence of experiences throughout life, I personally relate his character to, at the end of the day, being a good man only following his orders. You can hear this in his voice and the way he holds himself. He is proud, believes himself to be righteous, but ultimately a good human serving his country. You can see how quick he is to correct his wrongdoing when truth hits him in the face. Don't get me wrong, Quast (and even Crowe, yes) portray this well, but Norm really gets to me with his performance. And thus so, I believe Norm is my best candidate for exploring Javert's inner battle between his values of humanity vs. what he was taught, his sense of justice vs. what is right.

I've never liked Gavroche's bit at the end of the song. It's an instant mood-killer from such a powerful song.

I've always liked it because it's an example of the very plot to the musical. Gavroche is a little rebel kid who represents the people. His little piece at the end seems to be a metaphor of the power struggle between the people and those who are actually in power. (Also it's kind of adorable lol)

I love that he says it and while watching the show it fits but for the soundtrack I wish they had tacked it on to the beginning of ABC Cafe rather than the end of Stars, because I agree, definitely a mood killer. The way he sings Stars gives me chills and then Gavroche takes those away instantly haha.

There is no pain like the pain of a soprano who wants to sing like this. Bass is just so satisfying and out of reach. It's frustrating.

Lewis, Quast, and Crowe all bring their own tone to Javert in Stars. Lewis plays Javert as this serious guy who knows nothing but law and justice. Quast is more of a angry guy who's like condemning all sinners to hell. Crowe's Javert is definitely more reflective and his version sounds like he's in a thoughtful prayer with god.
I think each actor who portrays Javert has their own merit and I quite like all of them, but considering that Crowe was the first Javert I was introduced to, I might favour him more but Lewis and Quast are amazing too in their own way.

I can't remember whether Gavrouche sings his little piece at the end of this song as part of the normal presentation of this song in Les Mis, but if not, it is very clever editing to add it in here!

Meh, in the book Javert was supposed to be a somewhat unstoppable, zealous force of confidence and justice, he embodies justice, he is the law. Russell Crowe has too much pondering, too much doubt, to resemble that.
