    I think that Forbidden Lands did a really good job with creating ratings for supplies and making them matter for wilderness exploration and travel. Dungeon World's Perilous Wilds supplement also did something similar (though I haven't tried it myself yet). Five Torches Deep also does a good job of abstracting supplies, although they do so with supply points (that you can spend in the middle of exploration on things like rations, rope, etc.) rather than with a rating or a target number that you have to roll.

    I can't count the number of times I've read a post or subthread online where the DM or player states they detest counting anything - not just food and water. Ammunition is hand-waved, encumbrance is ignored unless it's absurd, and even cost of living expenses are deemed "not fun." People say things like, "I'm not an accountant," or, "I play games to get away from worrying about that sort of thing," or, "Heroes don't run out of arrows." I find all those paths unsatisfying. Glossing over resource management removes a significant challenge of the game. Those who ignore it are missing out on a satisfying, rewarding aspect of the game that enhances play. I'm glad to hear there's a resource on the way to bring detail to this lost pillar of the game.

      @@laoxep that is more or less the point. People complain about not having anything to spend gold on. Look back at older editions of the game and you quickly find that many groups spent their gold on caravans of npcs. Why trudge through the wilderness in an easily attacked 3 man group? It's so much easier to spend 1% of your profits from the last dungeon to hire 30 henchmen and townspeople to carry supplies, tend beasts of burden, look after the 12 guard dogs keeping watch at night, and carry torches on the way into the dungeon and treasure on the way out.

    I totally agree that in high fantasy games like Pathfinder and 5E D&D it really is annoying that with a special ability or two and a 'ranger-spel" 90% of all wilderness challenges are just wiped of the table, especially when playing a ranger type character or maybe the opposite; a bunch of clueless city-slickers in the wild is an adventure in itself.To ditch that is ditching the very essence of adventure itself! It's all about the journey not the destination!😃 Just deal with exhaustion, hunger, cold, navigation, poisonous plants, crossing swollen rivers, scaling rock-faces, tracking, hunting, building shelters,fires and traps, using secret ranger and Druid signs and finally be a proper ranger and/or Elf and keep your party alive and teach your partymembers to travel light and not haul all that shit.Hell Dm give that massive pile of gold you'll have to carry through desert, mountains or jungle in a realistic way; it'll be the bread and butter for one of your best and most worthwhile adventures not in the least because everybody will be able to relate better and quickly be submersed in the greatest teacher humanity ever had ; MOTHER NATURE AKA THAT 💚GREEN HELL💚

    "I don't want to remove even more from the game". Ahh. So true!
    I love the idea to just view the spells from a different angle. Introduce complications to those spells.
    Btw: I modified my resting rules a bit and they seem to put a reign on some of those spells too.
    1: Short-Rests are about 10-15 minutes long.
    2: I use the slow healing rules from the DMG. So you use hit dice on your long rests to heal.
    3: On a long rest you only get back half your spell slots and hit dice (rounded down).
    3a: Exception are Warlock spells and features like breath weapon etc.
    3b: I might introduce a option to convert Inspiration into a single hit dice (not sure about vice versa).
    Now the PCs have to be a bit more mindful about spell use. Create Food & Water, Good-berries etc. are now way more expensive.
    Maybe if they eat to much good-berries still - they have to save or lose a hit die for that day.
    I am very interested in the resource die mechanic. Sounds really promising.

  • @sensur1
    @sensur1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have developed a little system that the groups consumption of rations is determined by a 1d4 die. I also had three "paces" the group can travel in. "Slow" gives -1 to the 1d4 consumption die. "Normal" gives no modifiers and "Fast" gives +1 in friendly terrain and +2 in tough terrain.
    Tied together with the Scout role that has the "Forage" ability and the Cook role with the "Cooking" ability that also has their outcomes determined by die with modifiers, I think its abstract enough with some randomness that keeps the pacing going but they still have to worry about rationing without becoming an accountant.

What you describe about players becoming deeply attached to their characters in these types of campaigns rings so true, at least for us. Looking forward to the finished product. I have to say that there a lot of quality of life features that are way to easy for the players to get ahold of in D&D. One of my biggest pet peeves is anything that lets players fast travel of bypass areas with ease. Another one is all of the magical huts and whatnot that let players rest without the burden of having to worry about getting attacked during the night. Though this has not been so much of an issue in this campaign, my last one it was. Honestly, there will be various things that will simply not be making it into my next game. It just kills great opportunities within the game.

    • @CitanulsPumpkin
      @CitanulsPumpkin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One method to limit some of the ease of use and fast travel stuff is to just alter the thematics and descriptions then have your players roleplay through the changes you made.
      For example, Goodberry. Don't change anything about the mechanics of the spell or limit/ban the use of it. They can cast goodberry all they want. But like Jim said in this and a few other recent videos, magic food is the worst thing you can put in your body. So every time their teeth piece the skin of a goodberry tell your players they feel like they're being waterboarded with lemonade.
      It also helps to play the adrenaline shot scene from Pulp Fiction and tell them "Yeah, that's what it looks like whenever you cast revivify, or use magic, potions, or goodberry to get back up while making death saves."

    I like the idea of a hybrid approach. Leave trivial things as meaningless (food and ammo). Set aside time in the adventuring day for minor foraging and fishing, arrow and bolt making. Let there be a chance for food to spoil or a quiver to accidentally dump out, and the consequences of that.
    I see ammo as almost punishment for a ranged character as you don’t really ever run out of longsword. Some of that can be attributed to the comparative safety inherent with attacking from a distance.

Then i am working on my own way of doing the Trailblazer, scout, quartermaster and warden. with degrees of success ranging from, you travel normal time, to asking the players to tell me what is here, such as land marks or maybe dungeons. Something on exploring, as I've done that in my youth. Are you exploring in an area that has been explorer before? Or going from one place to another that people already had gone before. We are a social species, and we require the survival of more people to keep our species alive. That's how we survive, and we keep doing so, specially in a setting like D&D, we would share knowledge of such things for free, it's both our nature and instinct for surviving. Now, if they are going into an unexplored area, then the safety thing to do with rations is to take either a lot more or turn back once half the rations have disappeared and there is no way to acquire food in the wild.
    I explored caves, explored mountains and forests, swamps, deserts and so on. It was a fun activity back then, there are rules for safety though even back then since it was just me, my siblings and my mother.

    Didn't mean to double-post but to be honest I think that wilderness exploration in 5e is fundamentally broken and requires both a lot of house rules (such as the supply rating that you describe and some non-D&D RPGs use) or banning certain spells and items (goodberry spell, bags of holding, Tiny Hut spell, many ranger abilities, certain backgrounds like the Outlander). 5e RAW makes wilderness exploration too easy beyond level 5, and requires too much effort on the DM's part to make it meaningful. And usually it's only for the benefit of one or two players who enjoy that kind of thing while the rest of the group usually just sits on the sidelines, makes some rolls, and wish they could've just fastforwarded to their destination.

    • @NoActuallyGo-KCUF-Yourself

      ". . . 5e is fundamentally broken and requires a lot of house rules"
      That statement generally describes all of 5e.

  • @ttprophet
    @ttprophet 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the spirit of making wilderness fun. I enjoy equipment management, but i dislike the 5e system for it. i often exchange weight management for a slot system. You freely carry a belt with a main and off-hand sheath, 20/20 ammo pouch (or quiver), a 30/30 component pouch, a 5/5 water skin for short rest hit dice, a 1/1 ration pocket for long rests, and a tool kit satchel (tools can be replaced with larger items such as hunting trap, 10' retractable pole, or door ram, etc.)
    Additionally, your STR score x2 is your carry weight slots. backpacks and mounts and carts significantly add to the carry slot number for the party, but you risk losing it all if you go into a vertically challenging terrain without a game plan to lift a pack mule 50 feet up a rock wall (make block & tackle great again lol) also, make rangers great again, so they can navigate your pushcart full of mined copper ore thru the cave and out again. but i digress.
    i give out loot like crazy, but they all have random die slot mechanics for the sizes they take up in carry weight. When there is an hour worth of travel between each section of a "dungeon" (to far to backtrack) and too much to carry, players have to fomo to leave something behind to pick up something new. which mean they may drop some extra torches or rope to grab more loot. Not even myself as the DM knows what its value yet, as the dice decide this as well. they are often caked in mud, fossilized, or rusted (very nondescript)
    When the party long rests, what I do is "perceived" value. the higher you roll, the better % chances you have of having something of great worth. make a roll to identify the item, then note that number next to the item. if you fail the percentile roll it is still mundanely valued for gp equal to the amount of your roll.
    Choose one:
    Perception + weight= % chance of being highly valuable to a merchant.
    Arcana + weight = % chance of being enchanted
    History+ weight= % chance of being valued by a specialist/collector who might trade up with rare items.
    Investigation + weight = % chance of being something very useful. particularly something clutch to the mission.
    Religion + weight = % chance of yielding a blessing, bane, or augury.
    Nature + weight = % chance of gaining experience or boon

  • @ttprophet
    @ttprophet 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    22:00 is good stuff.
    for more veteran tables, the burden should be a part of the journey.
    one thing I do is require generalized "components" to cast a spell but are consumed. Similar to how sourcery was explained in the witcher series. something must give and something must take. this makes monster hunting a more meaningful journey. Spell focus merely negate cast fail chance, but anything with component feature must have something to consume. Base 3 components down into a +1 component to make higher spell attk and save DC, or kill a high CR monster to collect high +1 or +2 compenents.
    "For sure we could sneak around these trash mob goblins, it's not worth our time, but we could use the easy kills for some goblins toenails, since my component pouch is getting low. and we can sell the rest to the local alchemist, or, i might can brew a poison with it, or make a scroll of stinking cloud."
    See? the burden provides motive. it makes the story pace out that much easier when players are focused on being optimized verses being brave to push on. In this way, you don't need to write countless plot beats. The necessity to survive will make for a good narrative as you work your way towards a singular easy to remember and highly motivated plot beat.

    There are so many class features / options / skills that never really get used if you skip the journey. No matter the game system. Clerics create food and water / purify water , ranger abilities etc….
    The travel / survival aspect is important. It makes reaching that small settlement and a good nights rest at the inn a reward in itself.
    The resource tracking streamlining is important though to make it a mini-game.

    People usually play 5E as if the world between zones of interest is not a zone of interest. It impoverishes the game so much. I myself use the rule 1-2. For every single (story relevant) encounter in a specific location (city/village/fort/lair...) there are 2 related encounters "on the road". Distribution of the story throughout the world, really makes the world alive.

    I really dig the resource abstraction die mechanic concept. Particularly with ammo it smoothes the disconnect with feeling like you ought to carry inordinate amounts of ammo. In game terms it makes sense but narratively speaking who would even imagine they might need 200+ arrows between excursions

      I let Rangers keep deft explorer from Tasha's, but favored foe/enemy are replaced with favored mana. I took the 5 colors of mana from magic the gathering, plus colorless, and let rangers pick one color at 1, 6, and 14.
      Creature types, races, backgrounds, classes, and terrain types are all mapped to one of the 6 color options. Players deal an extra 1d6 on 1 or 2 attacks a turn if the color identity of the creature they hit matches one of their colors. They also get one or two languages common to their color, and advantage on all Dex, Int, and Wis checks made in terrains of their color or while dealing with creatures/cultures tied to their color.

    I never use fast travel even when it's an option in video games anymore. The only exception is in instances where it's the only option; I remember in Ocarina of Time there's a puzzle where adult Link goes to a place and learns the song to warp to that place, and then he has to go back in time so child Link can play the warp song because otherwise the place is inaccessible in the past.

    I had a player play an abhorrent mind sorcerer and take the navigation feat. On one hand, we lost the ability to get lost…but on the other hand, each time we navigate I have an in game reason to move ahead a bit as well as give them a chance to narrate how they lead the party through the uncharted areas.

    Love your videos...definitely the most insightful and thoughtful among your peers. This is aside from the main topic of this video, but I just wanted to throw in a different perspective concerning ammunition. Yes it's dumb for a PC to carry hundreds of arrows, but I would question how a PC could find that many arrows. It is actually difficult to make arrows by hand that fire correctly. I think the DM has the freedom within 5e to make ammunition harder to come by...scarce, expensive, and only from an NPC fletcher or a PC with Woodworking tool proficiency (which is what XGtE suggests, 5 each day, only if the materials are available).

    I think Breath of the Wild would serve as a good example of how to make exploration just as fun, if not more so, as completing main quest. Obviously it's not a one to one example since BotW is a video game instead of a TTRPG but I think many of the principles still apply.

    What about weapon condition for long journeys.
    Something like a hit die for your equipment that you can use on a rest for basic maintenance. Each time you use the "repair" you can drop the die level by 1(d10 to d8 to d6...) You wouldn't so much worry about sudden breakage as you would dread watching your equipment slowly deteriorate.

    I like goodberry. But I also like the idea of limiting it by making it so your character only wants to eat a goodberry as a last resort. You eat them to fend off starvation or when you're down and making death saves so the ranger puts one berry between your teeth and presses your jaw closed.
    So far my best idea is to say that goodberry does everything the spell says, but as soon as their teeth pierce the skin of the berry your character feels like they're being water boarded with lemonade.

      Okay so apparently I was the only one paying attention to the part of the video where Jim talked about limiting magic food consumption becuase it's literally the worst thing you can put in your body in every myth, fable, and fairytale where magic food comes up.
      I get that it's hard to pay attention and you guys might not have noticed that this video is talking about very specific homebrew rules to add chellenges back into the exploration pillar of the game. But if you're just here to nitpick over limited use houserules while ignoring the context and content of the video you can kindly piss off.
      Edit: also, how exactly is turning Goodberry into an easy route to recreating the adrenalin shot scene from Pulp Fiction "punishing the players?" I never even mentioned changing the mechanics of the spell. Just the thematic effects that should be roleplayed through.

    Aw fuck, that resource dice thing is brilliant! I think the reason players don't like resource management is because it feels binary - they very reasonably feel that it's "just a roadblock the DM is insisting I deal with before moving forward". Putting it to dice and game-ifying the weight of the result is brilliant though because it takes pressure off the GM, lets the player's abilities matter, and makes the result more interesting and less binary!

    I've wanted to run an entirely wilderness/survival campaign with my friends for a while, but I've finally buckled down and started working on it. But I'm unsure how I will keep their attention on a world with not much lore or POI. At the moment, they are a group of adventurers who sailed off with a group of settlers to discover the secrets of a newly discovered land. I plan to have a mysterious kind of magic to the land with tremendous creatures and whatnot and ancient ruins of a forgotten civilization. Any suggestions on how else I should build up the world would be greatly appreciated.
