    Finally! Someone who understands oil. People thought I was insane putting 15W60 oil in my Petrol Landcruiser when Toyota use 5W40- in PERTH!
    I wonder why on earth people use 0 or 5W anything in Australia.

      Been in workshops for high performance cars and heavy diesels my whole life.
      Even had Penrite visit us regularly on technical briefings.

      The Road Runner well obviously oil flows thicker during cold starts and hence the need for a multi grade oil?
      What are you actually asking here? That super low viscosity oils like 0w or 5w are better at cold starts?.... In Alaska sure, in Australia, not really.
      The difference between 5-15w isn't much in our climate except that at running temperature the lower grade oils start burning.... Hence this video among others made by Berrima Diesel.
      Its the same reason car manufacturers recommend putting 32 or 33psi in tyres which is a safe universal pressure for the world yet every tyre shop here recommends 38-40psi.

    Thanks for your comments Andrew. I agree with your suggestions. In Sri Lanka the temp and humidity is similar to the Phillipines. My dad's old Triton has been running SAE 30 for 27 years without any oil related issues. I admit hat these old engines have absolutely no emissions control systems, but still goes to shows that you need to pick the correct oil according to local conditions.

    Your comments are so true. I'm relatively new to diesel life but noticed my mq triton was a fumy extra rattly pig on 5w30 in the middle of an Adelaide summer. Catch can filled in no time. Went to 10w50 problem solved and runs like a champ. On a side note, running the thicker oil makes the exhaust almost smell like it's running on gas? Penrite both times.

    I bought a hilux new in 2011, changed the oil basically when I got home to Castrol Rx super 15-40 and there has not been a problem. Motor sounds great. This is in Brisbane climate.

    Andrew,simply the Truth up here in FNQ we have same problem ,not quiet as drastic as we’re you are now But very close today humidity is at least 110% let alone driving in water all week .Rainfall this current Sunday to Sunday 1 Meter plus Regards F N Q

    I live in the tropics in North Queensland, but up on the tablelands inland from cairns where it's a bit cooler and a lot less humid.
    Even so. 15w40 for my 2.5 L Turbo CRDi. Brought it used, first thing I put on it was a 30 micron pre-filter for the fuel, second thing was the catch can on the gas return.
    Once you've done those two mods, then you can start thinking about light bars and lift kits.

    The biggest problem are the dealers making us hostages with their warranties & poor service. The 4 times I brought my crdi car to the dealer for service, I was surprised that they use 3 different types of oils on those 4 occasions & until recently, I found out the oil they were using for my DPF equipped car was the wrong type. Instead of using a low or mid SAPS acea c2 or c3 oil, they choose to use an acea b type of oil. I was asking them about it but it looks like they had no clue what I was talking about. The thing is, after the warranty is long gone, that might be the time that the dpf clogs & gives me problems, when it is out of warranty & you know how much a dpf replacement will cost. So, I think the best thing to do is just do the pms myself, save a little money & use the proper oil for it.

      Penrith isn't in Central Queensland brother??? Penrite!!??? Seriously though, how does it go with towing? Does it get a bit hot? I use 20w 50 extra 10 zinc around the Sunshine Coast in my new old 94 LN106 HILUX and wondering about using the 20w60??

    My old LN106R HILUX has had MAJOR work done on the motor and still had small leaks?? Changed my oil to Penrite 20w 50 extra 10 Zinc and now all leaks have stopped!?
    What got me was my mechanic telling me that my 09 Colorado with 210 000 km had GET sensor problems and I was told to let them drill it out as it's not needed in SEQ? They priced the sensor at $1000, When I sourced it for around $200???
    NOT MY MECHANIC ANYMORE!.???

    My 2 pet pevs is idiots telling people to use water thin oils and low tyre pressure and doesn't matter if its a Hilux or an SS (just a random couple of common cars)!

    I'm not too sure, do you guys at Berrima really understand the oil viscosity numbers?
    SAE ratings will be interpreted differenty from one type of engine to the other. All engines have similar operating temperatures no matter how hot or cold the outside air temperature is.. This will be plus or minus a few degrees but nothing crazy enough to warrant changing what the manufacturer recommends.
    The SAE numbers at operating temperature/ 100degreesC.
    The "W" number relates to the viscosity of the oil for a cold engine.
    So for example... assuming the same ambient temperature, a 0w40 grade oil will be exactly the same viscosity as 15w40 grade oil, once its reached 100degreesC operating temperature.
    The first number with the "W" represents how the oil flows at a certain ambient temperature, the lower this number the faster it flows at the same ambient temperature, it has nothing to do with viscosity once the engine has reached operating temperature.
    Most engines require an oil flow of around 14cst hot or cold... Centistokes (cst) is the measure of a fluid's resistance to flow (viscosity).
    Even at 0 degreesC a 5w40 grade oil will still be at around 800cst at start up... Still far too thick to fully protect your engine.. This is why most engine wear happens at start up. 😉
    Don't listen to these fools at Berrima Diesel!! Follow the manufacturers specs and if you can find an oil that exceeds it than even better.. Example, use a 5w40 instead of 15w40.. As long as the additives are compatible with what the manufacturer states than you're good to go. 👍
    All engines are engineered to work at a specific CST oil flow rating, the manufacturer knows best and will give you their recommendations.

      You basically just explained what most of us already know. The two numbers on the bottle are simple to understand.
      These "fools" at berrima diesel are putting great information out there for the consumer and the trades to take into consideration. Its a great way for all of us to talk about the issues at hand and all put a valid point in for the greater good.
      Take a less aggressive stance and share your information with us politely otherwise piss off

      yeah what your saying sounds good until you put an oil pressure guage in and on a hot day see the difference between a traditional 15w40 mineral vs a 5w40 Synthetic as reccomended by manufacturer . you can jam that BS up your arse mate i'll stick with the 15w40 mineral that performs and lubricates the engine instead of saving the environment. You clearly don't have too much real world experience

      @@themisunderstoodgorilla7030 My manual states 10W-30 is not suitable for 35*C+, only 15W-40 or 20W-50. Ambient temp is definitely important.

    I've heard many stories especially the Nissan yd25 having premature timing chain failures due to incorrect oil viscosity (15w40 insted of 5w30) for example, causing hydraulic chain tensioner to malfunction...
    Any truth to this ?

    Love your work. Im in Darwin. Similar to Philippines weather. So a 15w 50 would be better for my car? Td42 non intercooled! Also would mineral, semi synthetic, or full synthetic? Also what oil brand do you believe is best! Cheers

    The 3.2 duratorq ranger engines. The oil is very specific in the manual. Was wondering of there os a better option?

    The low number is not the problem...Stacks of 5W40 Oils out there now....30 weight is fine if you have the V8...Its has an Engine Oil Cooler from Factory

    Is using this way to thin oil why lots of 2.8L Hilux's and Fortuners are eating timing chains? Put in say 15W50 ( for Perth ) will be much better for the timing chain, and reduce the fumes from the crankcase?

    The Nissan dealership I called the other day said that the oil used for the Super Safaris are 10w30. I didn't believe it when I heard it. So watching this comes as a coincidence. So can you then help me? What spec of motor oil should I put into a 2011 3.0L Diesel Super Safari? Thanks!

    Taking into account same brand and line of oil but different multigrades and grades are viscosity ranges..
    Average OPERATING viscosity on a 10w40 , 15w40 and 5w40 would be similar amongst the prev 3 as would be between a 10w50 and 15w50. The number before the 'W' is the viscosity at low temp so basically flow on cold STARTUP. (20-40 degC?)
    Number after 'W' is at 'hot' operating temps therefore say an example of 10w40 and 15w40 oil would have similar 'hot' viscosity (measured 100degC?)
    So in the southern hemisphere climates of Southern Africa and Australia, I PERSONALLY understand that if one uses a 5w40 and another a 15w40, both get the same operating protection, but the 5w tends to get quicker lube and is quieter in colder morning starts. Thats where your 'W' rating is a benefit. This is fir std city driving, offroad desert etc replace 40 with 50..
    Note viscosity grading is a range.
    For those that misunderstand, oil does not thicken when it gets hotter. Eg a 0w60 would still be thicker at 30 degC than it would be at 100 degC.
    To add more confusion...
    What is also important for diesels is ACEA (A3/B4...etc)or API ratings(CF,CI,CJ...)

    Agree 0-30w is a joke - what about these new DPF 200 series mate, how much diesel is finding its way into the sump? I guess these thins oils are not helping

    Bi Turbo Diesel Rangers Ford asking for C2 0w30 in Adelaide conditions. Catch cans full of oil. Ford have know idea on what oil's to use and that's to look after the warranty?

    👍Good on Ya Mate! Finally Some Truth About Correct Oil Viscosity - The Oils Folks are Putting in There Diesels are Almost as Thin/Light as Hydraulic Oil!! These Days Commonsense Ain't So Common! I run Castrol 20w50 in my Old Hj Holden 202- & 10w40 in myTd42 Patrol & Never had any Problems- But these Modern Motors are Prone to Drinking Oil! Maybe its too Thin!! Hopefully one Day i can Get my Patrol Service/ Tuned @ Your Shop- By a Bloke Who Knows What He's Talking About! -Cheers👍🍺🍻

    Loving the whole video series I've just about watched all of them! Here's my question. I have a VW amarok. I swapped from 5w30 to 10w40 and am getting less blow by, my catch can isnt filling up now which i love but I get tappet noise on cold start up like the oil isnt viscous enough for the lifters to prime. so i swapped backcto a 5w30 strait away. Is there a solution?

    Yup...here in Karachi, Pakistan, I’m using 15w40 as a MINIMUM in my 1GD Fortuner and 20w50 in my Kubota generator. If I were to do a road trip in the southern part of the country in the summer, I’d probably run 20w50 in the Forty as well. By the way, our 1GD doesn’t have a DPF to worry about.

    Hi Andrew & thanks for this very important topic of low viscosity oils vs hot climates... Now, I'm taking about diesel engine oils here with vehicles fitted with DPF'S,.. I cannot find anywhere a higher viscosity oil (10w40, 15w40, 20w50) that is DPF friendly/compatible!
    The only one I can find is 5w40 which I think is extraordinary!
    If anyone out there finds a higher viscosity oil that is DPF compatible, please drop me a comment.... R

    @ BerrimaDiesel What do you recommend for cooler climates for the D4d hilux such as Tasmania. Winter temps from -5 to 20c and summer 10 to 35? My manual states 5w30, Castrol AU website states 15w40, Castrol NZ (closer to TAS temps) states 10w30. So much confusion...
    Any suggestions?

      Tac-Spec 10w40, even 15w50 if you do longer trips or tow.

      @@OFFICIAL_VIDEO_AWARDS Given that every Cummins / CAT / Komatsu engine in every piece of earthmoving equipment in every mine in Australia , plus every 4 trailer road train and every heavy haulage prime mover runs ........... wait for it ............. 15W40!!!!!!! So given that all of these engines run harder , hotter and longer than any 4wd will ever do in it's pretty fair to say your viscosity theories are not exactly on point!!

      MJHMech . That’s right! Ask any transport company what they run in their trucks. It will be 15w40. I run that in my 79 land cruiser. I hold my tongue in any campfire discussion about ‘what oil do you use in your 4wd’?

    I would be very very grateful for a reply on this.. an engine like a d4d designed for low friction oil like 5w30 ... will it still have a good flow of oil past the bearings and even oil piston rings when you are changing over to 15w40 ? Is there going to be extra strain on the oil pump? Thank you

      this oil would be fine even in freezing to extremely hot temperatures use a 15/40 no worries

    Hey mate I have a 2008 Hyundai i30 I do have a catch can that I made my self that is baffled and filtered and I'm running 5w 30 in it and I normally do 500km per week what oil would you recommend for it

      dj red hare aus 10w40 would be an ideal all year oil. I'd recommend synthetic Penrite.

      Penrite Have a DPF Friendly HPR Deisel oil. I do not run anything else in my 4WD. Had my injectors done and the guy asked me what oil I was using. Said the head was one of the cleanest he had seen. Changed to Penrite in his 200 series Landcruser.
      Biggest mistake people make is thinking that using a full synthetic will be better for your engine. In relation to diesel engines, there is not enough detergents in the oil i use a Penrite HPR 15-40 Semi which has served me well In my NX pajero.
