When I was asked this I told them my weakness is that I keep falling down the stairs. They laughed it off and hired me. First day at work I fell down the stairs in front of all my colleagues. But I gotta add: 2 months later it was discovered that there is a medical reason for this. I always thought I just became too stupid to walk stairs but in reality it turned out that my sense of balance got damaged from a paralysis I had 1,5 years before.
The fact that you fell down the stairs on your very first day sent me, sorry for laughing. I'm glad you found out about your diagnosis, hope you're healing

One that got me every job I applied for- “You know, I can’t think of any on the spot-but I do know that when I am made aware of any weaknesses I do my best to recognize and work on them.”
that’s actually true for me, so i’ll try using that! (i think the reason i can’t think of anything on the spot is because i am also terrible and bad at remembering things under pressure 😅)
@@beautifulcatastrophes463 Yeah, but what if that's literally the truth? I'm exactly the type who has terrible issues day to day and then when the time rolls around to see a psychiatrist or therapist I remember none of them... I just remember the vague sense that something is wrong, but not what. This is kind of a similar thing... so I don't know how I'd answer it without going "I don't remember what I struggle with because it didn't feel like a priority for the interview mindset".
@@aFlightlessBird21 it's not that you wouldn’t have done good in the job if you were honest and got rejected. it's that you wouldn't have inflicted much unnecessary and easily avoidable trouble, should you only have lied. as rather an honest person myself, i struggle because of it and even when i'm tryna find sth of a middleground, in the end i wind up thinking it would've been simpler had i only lied. so sometimes i just choose to make it up when it's sth trivial or, as in this case, moronic. at times it just saves your time and psyche for something more valuable
I was asked this at an interview once and responded "Im not good at answering unexpected questions on the spot. I try to be prepared though" Got the job 😂😂😂
“My biggest weakness is that I am currently unemployed 😎” I disagree. I'm 54. I'm still unemployed. My wife is 6 years younger and her tits are like rocks. Our kids are healthy, we have two houses and all we could possibly need. I was once employed. I got cured.
I once said that 'I'm not a chatty person and prefer to stick to the task'. But I also added that I know how important good relationships are among co-workers so I was reading up about how to encourage good vibes with others.
Oh god, I know this all too well. I have little to no social skills than that of my co-workers, but I do try to keep a good standing with them by being respectful in every interaction we have.
Good advice...I think I'll use that too. That way you (1) show you are a good hard worker who doesn't waste time chatting with co-workers but (2) you still know good working relationships are important and are working on perfecting those. Perfect. It has something to do with the job yet puts you in a good light no matter what. Love it!
Mine was “I tend to be a bit chatty but generally I’ve found that this helps me bond with coworkers and accomplish tasks easier.” Works like a charm. Plus, now they know I’m the personality hire ❤
My greatest weakness? I used to just be honest "I'm shy but I'm working on it because I'm putting myself in situations where being shy isn't an option"
The answer I give is “public speaking”. It’s not something I have to do often in my role, and I’m not actually too bad at it, so I just say that I seek out opportunities to practice public speaking to mitigate my weakness. Win-win.
that's a great suggestion for most people, since most people hate public speaking! i personally enjoy it. and i can't answer the question untruthfully.
Its my weakness also, my anxiety goes through the roof when I have to do it, but if I dont tell someone they dont even notice. But I would never tell I seek opportunities to do it, because I dont want to do it. 😅 like I love to talk and stuff, but I hate when the crowd is staring at me quietly.
I’m not preparing for no job interviews but this short made me realize I have a delegation issue. I really want to delegate but I also am afraid people don’t do things good enough or I am putting too much pressure on others…really need to work on this. I have group project trauma from school 💀
I landed a job recently, i said that I'm often not good at asking for help, but I am working on speaking and standing up for myself and what I need help with. I said I had gotten a lot better at that this year.
I've used this one as well. When I thought honestly about a weakness that doesn't sound too bad for a potential employer it made sense to use it as an answer. At least it makes it sound like you know what you are doing but still have a weakness.

absolutey, the point of this question is not to exploit you but to see how well you understand yourself and if you're the type of person who can do something about it.
Hi there, HR here of many many years with some pretty big companies under my belt. My absolute favorite response and one I recommend is something along the lines of "While I could list off some weaknesses that you might hear often, I do not believe I have any that would impact my ability to work well within your company". It shows confidence with a hint of awareness. You say this with a smile and practice your tone to not come off cocky. Of course if asked to elaborate, then have something ready like this video suggest but more often than not you will find that the answer will suffice and it will be something they were not expecting to hear.
@@BioTheHuman Hello and thank you for asking. Most questions are done to get to know how you think on your feet, and also to possibly weed out bad candidates. You don't have to fake it. If youre applying for a job that requires you to be on your feet for 20+ hours but your weakness is that you hate standing/have an injury that would flare up or stop you from doing so then knowing about it before hand stops us from wasting both of our times. I'm not sure what sort of jobs you're applying to but at the level I've worked at, candidates are surely screened for their experience. My greatest weakness is 100000000000% my perfectionism. I’m not fucking joking. I’ve failed university courses bc I couldn’t force myself to hand in assignments that i thought weren’t perfect. @@oggyreidmore If you want to get into technicalities, capitalization isn’t a part of grammar. Capitalization falls under (writing) mechanics, not grammar. When I write online/in texts, if it comes out as “i” then it stays like that and if it comes out as “I” it stays like that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
same! I had to tell them that in a job interview cause it's too true (and I got the job!) It's not a good perfectionism, it's pathological. I've also failed subjects because of this, it's never good enough for me. As I work in the creative field, this is good and bad. I also need to be quick so I'm really trying not to be too sad if the thing is not too ideal, it's so hard
My greatest weakness is that I’m nice up to my breaking point. I’m currently working on setting boundaries so that I don’t get compounding resentment but can actually get the support I need to do the best work possible.
Just tell them i dont bracket skills into strengths and weaknesses, i have a matrix of skills that combine in different complementary ways depending on the task at hand. In reality, people asking these sorts of interview questions have just read a book, bern on a course etc and are really just going through the motions.. If youre getting the job the interview will have flowed and become a comfortable conversation long ago and theyll have all the justification for hiring you without asking these stock questions.
@@peeet there are in fact jobs nobody likes so they won't care if your heart is in it. On the other side the one's who don't plan to pay you fairly might not take you. One of my old bosses told me I can come off as a bit stiff in interviews and that's why he hesitated to hire me so I mention some variation of that as my weakness now and it actually comes off really well in practice. The first time I used it after he told me that I got my first job offer in quite some time.
I actually used the delegation idea in my most recent interview. It is something I always struggles with as I've been taught to do everything myself because asking for help/other to do something is a sign of being not good enough. I did get the job
The first one is real. One of the directors pretty high up was at a new shop (not my shop my shop was 50km away) I was helping to outfit. Literally said I try to do everything myself rather than ask for help from others so I'm trying to work on that. He literally smiled at me and went that's a perfect answer. I've used it in every interview since because its really hard not to get annoyed and do it myself instead.😅
Exactly. I said as follows; Due to my mental condition of ADHD, which I am being treated for I struggle with juggling too many task at once and some being missed. I’m currently working on asking for more help when I need it to ensure those jobs and tasks get completed on schedule.
I've been involved in hiring for the past 8 years. The "delegation skills" answer is FAR better, especially if given early in one's career before one would have a job that requires much delegation. The "I need to be a better listener" answer would get someone struck from my call-back list immediately. Poor listeners make poor employees so work on that skill, but pick something else to answer this question.
It's say at least 80% of answers to interview questions are complete on the spot bullshit and I want to know if you know that and if you do and are aware that the interview itself is a formality that's sort of like an act of a okay to get through, than I wonder how you do spot a good employee. Bc there are many people who would be good in a position that suck at interviewing at vice versa
I've heard the delegation line makes you seem like you're not a team player. Apparently it's one of the worst lines to use if you are going to be working in a team for any length of time at the company because it looks like you can't get along with others.
I was interviewing for a job as sous chef and one of my core responsibilities is to maintain food safety. So when I was asked this question I said "I OCD and I'm a germaphobe so I tend to wash my hands about every three minutes. I was hired on the spot.
Yea, it sucks that it's so clichê because it truly is my biggest weakness in a work/study enviroment. I get too hung up on details and work slower as a result.. it's not a "brag" or a "hidden positive", it's a bad thing!
@@OneCatShortOfCrazyI feel you. I once said that my weakness is that I tend to spend too much time on getting things right that sometimes it affects the deadlines. I’ve started working on it by dividing the task into smaller tasks and giving myself deadlines on how much time I need to spend on a particular sub-task. Did not get the job, but oh well, at least answered it honestly.
@@snehashifa That makes me feel like this type of question also just cater to people who are good at BSing and not those of us that are honest. The people who can play it up gets the jobs instead of actually honest people with integrity. I have trouble with these types of questions because I cant BS the stuff they want to hear. I think you answered the question really well though imo 👍
I did do that once, when they looked at me funny I said "No seriously, I'll spend time after being done with the job to a good enough standard to fix little things. If I ask if the work was done well, I also want to hear if it was done too well." This was in an academic setting and the team leader interviewing me just got done with their masters and instantly went to leading a research team. I absolutley struck a cord with that apparently.
Whoa! Don’t tell anyone at an interview that you think it’s be easier to do everything yourself or that you zone out when others are speaking. If those are true weaknesses, yeah work on them, but keep them to yourself!
I had this question with the CEO of a company after they flew me to another state for the interview. I was literally so head bogged from travelling since 4 am start of my day and had gone through 3 other interviews before him. I flubbed that all up. I still got the job!😁
I say that sometimes I struggle asking for help because I do not want to feel that I am taking away my superiors time, and then I explain how I am working on it and how I have improved in the past year. Not sure if thats a good answer, but its worked for me in the past.
I usually say my memory is my greatest weakness but I write a lot of things down to cope and keep a work journal an personal journal which I look at everyday. You can say any weakness as long as you present the solution you are implementing.
I talk about my anxiety but how it has helped me become hyper aware to a point that I expect the worst and therefore prepare for it. Has NEVER failed me 💅🏻✨
I literally said I was too thorough, that can be seen as a weakness as I make take longer to complete a task, but the results is that I can product high quality work. (Turns the weakness into a positive) Although, with practice and experience, I find a pace, I can find a great median where the quality and efficiency are effectively shown. A bunch of bs and it makes them happy 👌
This would be helpful and true. I have a hard time with social conversations so when someone tells me something they experienced I immediately think about if I experienced something similar to try to be able to relate to their experience. Before I would mention my experience, to tell them I relate. But some people just think that I'm not listening to them, and brush me off as selfish, but I'm not. I've been trying to say nothing abd let people talk, and sometimes that works. Explaining also helps, but I only do that to good friends. 🙂
I work in a photography studio and during my interview I was asked what my greatest weakness is and I told my manager I’m a bit of a people pleaser. In my line of work my manager is always saying do right by the customer to the best of your ability
From one ADHD person to another .. ADHD also usually comes with hyper focus, which is a bit of a superpower. If you want to couch your ADHD as a weakness, you can talk about how it can be difficult to maintain focus on multiple things at once (especially with interruptions), and how you are trying to employ tactics like time blocking and organizing/maintaining a master list of key deliverables/deadlines that are broken down by enabling steps (e.g. if you can't do X until Y and z are finished, you'd want them listed for tracking.) These will allow you to maximize the efficiency of how your brain works by giving you time to work on something in a dedicated fashion (while minimizing distractions) and by removing the burden of mental clutter in trying to figure out what needs to get done and when. This help you to minimize the challenges of ADHD, while better setting yourself up to benefit from hyper focus.
@@SeniorSunday oh I don’t talk about my ADHD at work, especially in an interview. My country has no protections for it and they will misunderstand my point completely.
@@tanya292 You could give the exact same answer without saying ADHD. If you don't feel comfortable, then I understand. I just meant that if you wanted to, you can structure the same kind of response in a job interview. Erin's only sounded better because of the structure of her answer, not the answer itself.
I told the guy months ago my memory and I forget easily. I wasn’t gonna get the job anyway so. I was gonna say perfectionist but didn’t want him to think I was saying it on purpose to make him think I’m trying to make myself sound like the only weakness is making the word perfect. Sounds like I’m lying
Omg yes! I went to a very unprofessional interview during COVID & was asked this question. I responded “as of right now I am not sure what my weaknesses are as I am re-entering the workforce however with proper training and dedication I am sure I am able to excel in this position” pretty vague but I’m honest and self aware. However, you want to know what the interview said?? “So you will suck at this job and cause problems with the company.” Sir this is for a hourly position at Lexus. So unprofessional. (made me wait for 1hr to start too, lesson learned I should left after 30mins from scheduled time). Can you make a video about red flags in a job interview?
That's insane! The most unprofessional interview I most recently experienced wasn't my own. It was watching my last boss string this poor girl along for TWO HOURS while she constantly left the conversation to assist clients I should've been handling. She also talked over the girl, scoffed at her interests, and when the young woman teared up unexpectedly (she was asked a question that touched on a trauma she had experienced) instead of letting her gain her composure and moving on, my boss dug deeper causing her to actually cry! Then, this nasty person I no longer work for had the nerve to call her "mentally unstable" before hiring her! I tried to push her not to hire the girl hoping to protect her from abuse. Ugh. Good for you for learning from from the horrible behavior! Mean does not promote success.
One red flag is if they ask something along the lines of "if you can commit to one year in the role." This directly translates to them having high turnover and 1 year being the 'break even' for the cost and logistics of hiring you.
@@Talley. Ohhh.... ha! This terrible person, who is the the business owner by the way, literally made a comment about the in the interview with me! I thought it was weird, because she didn't offer a contract. The turnover is in fact through the roof.
I wouldn't have got to that question. Last time I was given a time for an interview i arrived 10 minutes early and waited for 30 minutes. I told the receptionist that I'm leaving and that if the company can't keep an appointment time for an interview then I don't want to know what else they can't do.
I noticed from experience that not all companies care about "how you speak criticallt of yourself, your professional etiquette, whether you grow from your mistakes". Sometimes like in my case, they are buying time so you dont notice that you were basically hired the second you walked in with a clean record becauss they need people SO BAD. Second level of the same story is " Basically yes, but lets see if you accidentally expose red flags"
As a general manager of an upscale restaurant, this is true! I always said I could work on trusting others more which is similar to delegating but I’ve always been able to delegate as a a manager. It’s trusting others and knowing they will finish the fight 💪🏼
I usually say my greatest weakness is also a strength, I’m a perfectionist so it may take me longer to do things than others, the work I do is top notch
In one interview this question was asked to me. I honestly said "I can't deal with criticism well. I get sad when someone criticize something i do. But after i get out of emotional mood and rationally think about it, i can see they are right. I am still working on it."
Yo i had a job interview today and i got asked this question, and while i already knew this from other training, im so glad your teaching others about this amazing trick. For anyone else wondering, I learned that when you bring up a problem, always offer solutions, that way people will understand you are being constructive and not complaining. Doing this also taught me to counter negativity with more helpful ideas after, so its a good skill to practice in many areas of life!
Another worst questions is anything related to age (based on how you look), whether you’re married (divorced etc) have children (grandchildren) and finally if you have a disability. Those are the FORBIDDEN questions, yet recruiter still ask those questions. It is illegal for them to ask that!
I prefer not to answer those questions; but if you have any questions relating to the skills or experience found on my resume, I would be more than happy to answer them.
I usually go with " i tend to want to always multitask, or take on too much at once. its part of who i am, and i love that sometimes, but im always working on prioritizing tasks better and taking things one at a time. "
definitley the best way to answer this question is to make them realize your weakness is a strength in some sense, but just needs refining or help to make it valuable.
Good advice. Mine was that I often worked too hard and went a bit above and beyond too often, to the point I'd burn myself out. So I was working on pacing myself and getting the help of my boss and coworkers to remind me to slow down a bit.
I was swapping fields and got the job by saying my greatest weakness at the moment is practical knowledge of the role, but that can be solved with the training I’ll get, a book and time on the job. Somehow they gave it to me and haven’t looked back since
Yes! I struggle with this, too. Sometimes I pick things up REALLY FAST because I'm doing hands-on work, but then the training becomes more verbal steps and I get lost...but because they saw how quickly I caught on at the beginning, they get aggravated when I get confused over *little* things
I'm going to say this is going to sound a little bit dark. My sister was stillborn so I never really knew her and my own brother's a complete and utter sociopath it didn't give a crap about me. So when I went looking for jobs or anything in the professional world to find my actual career I had no real skills or anyting. I'm glad we have it internet big sister to help out. To anyone else who feels this way without that tragedy of a backstory. As she says you got this. And we got this. I just landed several interviews for my career filed. They're all scheduled over the next few weeks my wife is byond estatic.
I said: I work all the time, and spend all of my money, so my savings account is my greatest weakness. And they laughed and gave me the job with 30 hours a week as part time :)

I actually used the delegation idea in my most recent interview. It is something I always struggles with as I've been taught to do everything myself because asking for help/other to do something is a sign of being not good enough. I did get the job
Interviewer: *asks me any question*
Me: *literally fades out of existense*
Anxiety in. Body out.
That's ME 😭
The first one is real.
Exactly.
I said as follows;
Due to my mental condition of ADHD, which I am being treated for I struggle with juggling too many task at once and some being missed.
But you do know people aren't really being honest when they answer this question or " what's your greatest strength" right?
It's say at least 80% of answers to interview questions are complete on the spot bullshit and I want to know if you know that and if you do and are aware that the interview itself is a formality that's sort of like an act of a okay to get through, than I wonder how you do spot a good employee. Bc there are many people who would be good in a position that suck at interviewing at vice versa
Them: "So what's your greatest weakness?"

From one ADHD person to another

Omg yes! I went to a very unprofessional interview during COVID & was asked this question. I responded “as of right now I am not sure what my weaknesses are as I am re-entering the workforce however with proper training and dedication I am sure I am able to excel in this position” pretty vague but I’m honest and self aware.

It also helps to think of it as a problem solving question. Here is my weakness and this is what I've been doing to improve.

Another worst questions is anything related to age (based on how you look), whether you’re married (divorced etc) have children (grandchildren) and finally if you have a disability. Those are the FORBIDDEN questions, yet recruiter still ask those questions. It is illegal for them to ask that!

The interviewer after u say the things she said : “ Yh I saw that video too now back to the question tell me your greatest weakness “
"my greatest weaknrss? I cant think of one"
I said: I work all the time, and spend all of my money, so my savings account is my greatest weakness. And they laughed and gave me the job with 30 hours a week as part time :)
