THE JOINT CAPSULE AND CAPSULAR PATTERNS All of the joints of the human body are encapsulated with the human version of shrink wrap, the joint capsule. Over time, the shrink wrap of the hip (joint capsule) can shorten and glue down, resulting in decreased roll and slide mobility of the ball in the socket. Properly loaded stretching can help to create "creep" and "hysteresis." Creep is the ability of a tissue to elongate over time when a constant load is applied to it. Hysteresis refers to the amount of lengthening a tissue will maintain after stretching. Think of it as plastic deformation, like pulling on a plastic trash bag. These mobility exercises are game-changers for joint mobility. Implementing these strategies for self-mobilizations that create a distraction force on these joint capsules can improve capsular mobility, improving overall joint play.
