- So, now the dust has settled, it's time to take a look at just how different Ultra Sun and Moon REALLY are to the originals! (spoiler: pretty different)

I love how sun and moon is like the first game where the opposite legendarys are actually cool with each other.

The first?
The ONLY games where the legendaries have any kind of problem are:
Gen 1 with MewTwo's general hateful attitude toward anything including Mew, but this is not a specific rivalry
Gen 3 with Kyogre v Groudon which is explicit about the fact those Pokémon hate eachother and will fight each other Kaiju-style, unless Rayquaza intervenes to airlock their powers and maintain some form of peace.
Every other Gen doesn't do this:
Gen 2 doesn't suggest any conflict between Ho-Oh and Lugia as far as I am aware; they are pretty much separate legendaries that don't have much to do with each other, and instead serve as leaders of the legendary trios of birds and beasts rather than act as their own proper duo. They don't have any beef between them.
Gen 4 aren't opposed to each other, as no conflict is shown between Dialga and Palkia. Someone can correct me if Giratina has beef with Dialga or Palkia, because I haven't played Platinum.
Gen 5 are two sides of the same dragon (Yin-Yang allegory), and aren't shown to be in conflict with eachother. Depending on the game version, each of them can merge with Kyurem in Black 2 or White 2.
Gen 6 are opposed thematically on the basis of life v death, but it's not apparent that Xerneas or Yveltal hate each other or come into physical battle.
Gen 8 are a duo that work together purposefully to prevent catastrophe, they don't fight.
Gen 9 are historically related to each other from the past and the future, and they don't fight.
Therefore Gen 2 is the first Gen that definitely doesn't show a legendary conflict, and technically even Gen 1.
You should try playing other pokemon games then.

I had a Decidueye with a decidium Z. thought i could catch ultra necrozma when i first met it with a masterball but i decided to hit it and see if my starter could deal some damage. Needless to say, I didn't expect the ghostly arrow rain (or whatever its' name was) to 1 hit KO. Oops. Good thing I didnt need to capture it.

Some upgrades without too much story spoilers in USUM includes:
• upbeat wild/trainer battle music
• updated Pokemon HP bar, text boxes, and no "Super Effective" suggestion on moves this time (reminds me of Platinum)
• +100 new Pokemon native to Alola region (like how Platinum, B2W2 updated the Sinnoh/Unova Dex)
Shiny hunting exclusive to USUM:
• All UB are now available in Shiny forms (note: there's only 1 Guzzlord)

Can you catch original starters in the regular sun and moon
I'm so confused and mildly annoyed. I've had a 2DS since 2016, but only just now got the ability to use it (I could never afford the games for it on top of the Xbox I had to buy games for to share with my brother). So, here in 2021, I'm trying to figure out what Pokemon game I should play. I figured "Ok, I'll play the newest game in the series that I can." which happened to be Ultra Sun and Moon. But now, aside from hearing that it MIGHT be the worst generation, I'm also seeing this kinda stuff, about how there's differences. When I started Ultra Moon, I KINDA just assumed that the differences between Ultra and Normal were about the same as the differences between Ruby/Sapphire, and Emerald. Or Diamond/Pearl, and Platinum. Minor differences that usually made for an overall better experience.
But now I'm seeing that there are actual proper differences. The story is a bit different (and common opinion seems to be that it's better in the original Sun/Moon), but then I'm seeing people say that ULTRA Sun and Moon has more content in general, meaning I'll have more to do and the game will last longer.
So I'm kinda torn on which game I should play now. I'm not super far into Ultra Moon, and would be willing to start over if I really felt like the original Sun/Moon would give me a better time. But if it's not that big of a deal, then I'm also fine playing Ultra Moon...
Late but I have a question in ultra sun and moon if you transfer the ultra sun kyurem and Reshiram over to ultra moon that already has a Zekrom and another kyurem can you in theory get both kyurem black and kyurem white or the game dosent allow you to have both fused at the same time? Cause I'm planning on moving all the exclusive legendary from the other game to my Ultra Moon but I wanted to get another copy of necrozma and kyurem..... Cause I'm also moving the spare solgaleo to my Ultra Moon so I get the other necrozma fusion hence why I also transferred the sun necrozma along with solgaleo.

I was kinda sad that they removed most cutscenes with Lillie (Exeggutor Island, Battle with Tapu Koko, Fireworks), I got so attached to her because of how many moments your character has with her.
Yeah, someone gave me US and I'm interested, but my favorite thing about the originals is what they did with Lillie and it sounds like that is pretty well butchered in these.
@@burnout713 The Ultra games ruined the Aether Family storyline to shift focus on to Necrozma. Lusamine is now an antiheroine who despite having good intentions in the ultras, she still has her psychotic behavior and still disowns her children… Gladion’s character arc in the original is about him learning it’s okay to rely on others and ask for help yet he leaves Alola in the end to “get stronger…” Lillie’s Exeggutor island scene is gone and instead of having a fresh start with her mother in Kanto, she stays behind and does nothing…
From a gameplay POV, it’s an improvement, but it’s inferior from a story POV.
The Exeggutor Island cutscene still happens, but it's with the fisherman that takes you to the island for some reason. It's something you have to unlock, but I don't remember what the requirements are. It's odd that they took out cutscenes that strengthened the story, yet the game is still cutscene and tutorial heavy.
plus the part that made me squeal, before you enter the league for the first time, your starter has a cutscene TWAS CUTE

I would've been happy in that scene, but primarina was literally the weakest pokemon on my team. Greninja should've jumped out as it was basically my starter (friend gave me a level 1 froakie at the start of the game)

Sun and Moon have a better interpretation of the story, I feel. If you look at Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as a "sequel" taking place in another reality from the base games, it becomes pretty interesting.

2 things you missed, in the Ultra games, you can evolve Crabrawler in the bottom half of mount lanikilla that’s open before Acerolas trial. As well as blush mountain now being able to evolve Nosepass, Chargabug and Magneton

Another super minor difference: when you go to conduct a wonder trade in FP, you don’t have to continually select the wonder trade option from trade to trade. You stay in wonder trade until you back out
Admittedly, I was looking for a video to see if there was a reason to pick up USUM or if they were more or less the same games. Since they weren't like Crystal, Emerald, ORAS or anything of the like, I was originally going to dodge them. Your video is actually super informative about the real differences, and while I don't think I'm interested enough of the new stuff to actually pick up a copy (Story beats are way more important to me in SM), I'm really glad there was a video to help fill me in. Thanks, and cheers to your good work! And of course, a subscription for compensation!
The gameplay is heavily improved, but Ultra really ruins the character development and themes that made the original Sun & Moon's story so good.
I disagree with the crystal and emerald one, they both still seemed very simular to rs and gs. At least usum made major differences.
Seems like I'm the only one who loves these games. I consider USUM to be better than the originals, and they're some of my favorite games from the franchise.

I'm glad I watched this video. I was going to stop playing Ultra Sun since I finished Sun the night before. Minor changes were noticeable but thank you for the in depth. I may have quit much sooner on Melemele Island due to the similarities. I skipped a lot of Pokemon games as a kid so making up for it since December.

Gen 7 is easily my favorite generation, its always gen 4 this and gen 5 that in the community, but this never gets the respect it deserves.
Pokémon had been without a "Director's Cut" edition for two generations now. I think people have forgotten what it used to be like.

@@rafaelu6849 Emerald, Platinum, etc. A third game with the third in a legendary trio. Better and improved features, story, and more. B2&W2 were sequels, not a directors cut. Same with USUM. A newer directors cut could've been Pokemon Z (X&Y), Pokemon Zeta Emerald (ORAS), and maybe one for Sun and Moon. USUM is kind of a pseudo sequel. It's a mix of a director's cut and a sequel in my opinion. We should've gotten Pokemon Z. X&Y were incomplete and had so much hidden away.

Colress plays a little more important role in USUM, he's the one to give you the N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer, and he's the one to revert everything to normal in the rainbow rocket episode.

After looking back at this video, USUM is my favorite Pokémon game ever. I know some others have opinions about it but I can't help but love these games. It was the first time I ever caught a shiny Eevee in this region.

If u turn the Exp. Share off in Sun and Moon, than the game can be challenging for you. Either way, I don't dind Sun and Moon to be that easy compared to X & Y where no matter if you turn off the Exp. Share, it still becomes easy.
Ultra necrozma was easy for my friend.

It was a pain in the ass. I just used toxic as an FU and won.
I used revives until the pp of ultra necrozomas moves finished then I used my incineroars z move🤣🤣
Get a zoroark, and have a fighting or poison type as your last Pokemon. Hell, you can beat necrozma with a low level zoroa, tbh.

Okay here's something people in this comment section don't understand. We love Emerald and Platinum, they're great changes to the originals and have a lot of new content!
USUM makes a lot changes that are great for Alola! There's also a few problems but overall they're great games! They follow the "3rd version" format. But UM doesn't have everything Alola has to offer and US doesn't have everything Alola has to offer.
The whole point of a third version is to have the best experience of that region. That means having all the content that Region offers. UM has 80% of all Alola has to offer, and if you want that extra 20% you need US. But if you get US you have 80% of the experience, so you still need UM if you want everything. The games are fun and entertaining, but it should be one game.
I can feel you here. Game Freak however seem to have long moved away from single releases though. (the last one was Platinum - 9 years ago!) I think they really want to push the whole version exclusives element of the games so I suspect they'll continue with paired games for the foreseeable future.
Well yeah. That's the problem but it make sense for some reason.
In my opinion, I think they did it because of trading which is one of the main thing of Pokemon. So I'm guessig we won't get any 3rd version in Gen 8 because they want us to trade with players either online(which most of us do thanks to GTS or by luck, Wonder Trade) or outside.
But I digress. Since Gen 8 will be on the Switch, I do think that they will give us the 3rd version that we want since we can't own two Switches and have two separated versions and give it a trade or we can't switch accounts during gameplay and open another game.
You mention Platinum, but Platinum didn't have everything Sinnoh had to offer. I love Gen IV and I can tell you a decent number of Pokémon were version exclusive to Pearl and Diamond, thus, for the full Sinnoh experience you needed all three games (and arguably all the Gen III games too, for the Pokémon that only appeared when a certain Gen III game was in the game boy slot.) That tallies up to Platinum requiring you to buy 8 games total for the full Sinnoh experience over the 2 or 3 of USUM.

This video was very helpful to me. I originally got Moon, so I decided to get Ultra Sun when the ultras came out. I didn't know which pokemon and such were differences between the originals and ultra, or sun and moon.

I recently acquired Ultra Moon after playing Moon 2 years ago because of work... Anyway I think I didn't waste my money for nothing, seems there are many things to do with the last entry of the 3DS prior to the Switch. I think I will giveaway my well preserved vanilla Moon for a change. Good video.

1 mistake in Pokemon.... You can get Ultra Moon fossils in Ultra Sun through Poké Pelago
My biggest gripe is, to me at least, the story is just far less interesting and developed with the best part of the original sun and moon was the story between nebby, lillie and lusamine but ultra just muddles with it to the point where it's impact is greatly ruined for me (same with how they no longer put emphasise on looker and Anabel, the fight against kukui being cut, and Lillie going to kanto being replaced with gladion going instead). But then Ultra is better in literally every other way with the photos, ultra space, rainbow rocket, mantine surf, graphics, ultra necrozma fight, poiple, the new z-ring design, harder difficulty, side quests, and enhanced Pokedex. Gen 7 forces you to sit through the story with the unskippable cutscenes no matter what game so it's kind of important to me that I'm getting the story I enjoy the most but I can't without sacrificing a bunch of elements I love in pokemon. My ideal situation would be for it to be a sequal like the johto games are to the kanto games and bw2 is to bw, that way you could have the necrozma stuff, lillie sticking around, rainbow rocket and enhanced pokedex without sacrificing the elements I love from the orignial games. Don't forget the glare on the Roto-Dex. It changes depending on what time of day it is and whether you're inside or outside. A tiny detail, but I love it all the same ♥

Ultra necrozma was really easy for me because I used a zoroark that was disguised as a deciduye so it kept just trying to use psychic type moves

Personally I think they butchered the story for more content, that’s the difference between those versions. While SM was more engaging, Usum simply lasted much longer in the end.

The only Pokémon out of that list that will be my first time being able to encounter it in a game is Palkia. I have: SoulSilver, Diamond, White, Black2, Y, AlphaSapphire, Moon and UltraMoon.
I appreciate this 3 year old video. I've had my 2DS since 2016, but only just now starting using it because I couldn't afford games. I decided to go for the newest game I could, and that was Ultra Sun and Moon. But then someone told me that the story in Ultra Sun and Moon was worse than the original Sun/Moon, but there was more content overall. So it kinda got me worried that maybe I picked the wrong game. Searching for the games on TH-cam brought me to this video. So thanks for this!

It seems like Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, albeit flawed, was a game where Masuda and Omori actually listened to criticism and improved Sun and Moon, fixing both its errors and introducing great new features. That's awesome.
