The Dio Sabbath albums are, to me, the best non Ozzy albums. But I still think of all non Ozzy stuff as side projects. Ozzy IS Sabbath, period. But I effing love Dio and you cant say a bad thing about his contributions to the Sabbath story.

Dio looked very frail but he still gave a hundred percent and nailed his vocals with passion and conviction like he always did. I'm glad I got to see that. Plus they played with Judas Priest.

The title track "Born Again" has become my favorite Sabbath song. Iommi's atmospheric, emotive guitar playing along with the awesome lyrics, "The distant shadows of forgotten champions/Those who live in me still/And will rise when we challenge and kill, " and Gillan's vocals that are rivaled only by Purple's "Child in Time," make this a killer song. Also, I was twelve when I first heard "Zero the Hero." My dad and I were stacking wood from the lawn on the farm into the garage. It was dark, cold, and the wind was howling. My dad went inside for a few minutes, and all of a sudden the radio station played "Zero the Hero." Let's just say it left quite an impression on me. All this negative talk about this Sabbath album with Gillan is ridiculous. Like any art, some people love it, some are indifferent, and others hate it. I am still thankful for it 38 years later!

I agree, Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules are amazing albums, but lets face it....they're pretty polished compared to Born Again, this is such a dark menacingly twisted album, no comparison....kinda reminds me of Sabotage....when people were truly frightened of them. just really weird, demonic and unlike anything of this world.

I agree with both of you, that makes it 3 of us and probably not many more. Sabbath fans either love Ozzy era and hate everything else, or love Dio era and hate everything else, or love both but put one above the other, or love them as well as the tony Martin era but always have born again at the bottom, and when they don’t they still don’t consider it better than both Martin and Dio era.

Back in 1983 Deep Purple and Black Sabbath where my two favorite bands and they still are, and Gillan is my alltime favorite singer. I was shocked with delight when I saw that Gillan was their new singer and I loved the album. I saw them on the Born Again tour and loved Gillan's version of the old Ozzy & Ronnie songs. My friend & I were calling for Smoke on the Water for the encore. The album cover is horrendus and they did suffer some Spinal Tap moments, but the music is superb. If you haven't heard the remix with some of the live stuff is bonus tracks, then I highly recommend giving it a listen.

very underrated sabbath album.people have always said it was a bad mix and levels were too high, true, but i think thats what gave it a cool and unique sound.and also great songs . zero the hero, trashed, born again and a song that to this day still scares the shit out of me , disturbing the priest.cool doc would have been better if the footage was better quality but it was over 30 years ago,

I always loved this album. It was great when I was a kid. I don't understand all this downputting or what is the word, it is not a bad album at all. Maybe not a genuine Black Sabbath thing but not as bad as people make it to be. For me as a kid it was good, and I still think it's better than what came after that. I liked the next few albums but that was it. I still admire Iommi for all he's done and that's it. If you don't have anything good to say then don't say it. Like what you like and don't like what you don't for f...'s sake.

I'll take Born Again over Headless Cross, Forbidden, Cross Purposes and 13. I just heard Ian Gillian sing the classic song Black Sabbath live on stage, it was a live recording from the 83 BA Tour, his only tour and now I'm more excited over this album than ever.

Of all the legendary stories about this time period the one Mick Wall mentioned in his Sabbath book the one I laughed the hardest at was that a unidentified Sabbath member when asked about the album cover said "It was Aimee Osbourne's baby picture." When Sharon heard that one you knew it had to be good

Heavy Metal Music was hugely popular in 1983 Priest, Maiden Accept, Saxon and Motorhead were all hitting the big time plus Dio and Ozzy were both having successful solo careers so Sabbath needed another vocalist to keep the fire burning

For metalheads, it's one of their best albums. I personally feel that they had a comparatively weaker patch with Ozzy's last album or two.
Born Again is a highlight metal album of 1983 for me. Like across the whole genre.
"Trashed" is both badass and hilarious. "Zero the Hero" and "Disturbing the Priest" are dark, heavy hits. "Born Again" drips with atmosphere.

Not that I'm familiar with their entire catalog, but the title track of this album ( along with the cover art ) could only be recorded by a band named Black Sabbath. The doom and gloom of the Ozzy period is only playing at being doom and gloom. This REALLY IS doom and gloom. I never heard anything that sounds quite like it.
