I want to make a popup card for my niece and came across your channel. I've been watching your videos for a couple of days now and I am amazed. Each time you open up one of your examples, I feel delight and wonder. And the books you show are simply crazy. Engineering is the right word for it. Thank you for those cool explanations amd inspirations.
5 years later and I still haven't found anyone as good as you when it comes to teaching how to make popups🫰🏼 you are an awesome mentor. May God bless you🫰🏼
I just finished the book and all tutorials thru 27 with mechanisms from your book - and I made dozens of models! I also snagged a copy of your first book and look forward to exploring variations in it. I'm continuing with all the rest of your videos... love this one and the latest you've been posting. I feel like I have a mentor online :) Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Another great pop-up design. Such pleasant videos. You make it so easy to expand on the design with the simple techniques you use. I have used this design and a few of your other ones to make seasonal or personal cards. This flower type pop-up I turned into a Valentines day card with a heart instead of flower... I am amazed that you do not have any commercials on your videos, thank you. But for all the work you put into these projects I don't think a little compensation would hurt. :)
Thank you for your enthusiastic comments. I don't really like advertisements so none on these videos - however we have put a "Donate" button on the the banner of The Pop-Up Channel - at the moment the "Donate" button is very very small and almost impossible to find! However Jane is working on making it bigger and better so that hopefully soon anyone who is moved to support us can donate.
I have to do this for a project we have on making a children's book, your pop up manual and videos have sure helped me to get some creative ideas running. Just wanted to say thank you!
Thank you so much, Mr. Birmingham. I have done a very similar mechanism by straws. It really creates a delightful effect. I can do it with card from now on!!! :)))
hello I did well you explain very clearly wow you are very talented my congratulations I am very interestng follow video help me a lot visual i am very happy thank you very much💜💙💚💛👍👏
I suppose you could add another layer using either the Open topped shape (Tutorial 18) or the Floating Plane (Tutorial 12) - could make these with much lighter card or even paper. As for opening one by one - difficult! - I'm sure it would be possible - but more than a little complicated to engineer. I think you'd need to experiment (probably a lot!).
Hola soy de Perú 🇵🇪me encantó su arte por up pop me gustaría que sea el tutorial en español o traducirla para poder entender es un maestro !!! Gracias .
I'm aware that you're a published pop up designer and i was wondering what binding-type you would use? I thought it was lay-flat binding but most publishers only offer that for photo books. Is it some variant of perfect binding?
Sorry, I'm no expert on binding. The gutter created by perfect binding will always be a problem for pop-up books. (Though I suppose if the mechanisms are purely of the Parallel-Fold type it may not be an issue.) The pages on most pop-up books are made as a concertina, so each page is actually double thickness (Good if pull-strips are included in the design) and the gully in the centre of each spread will open out totally flat. There are exceptions which are not concertinas and the centre of each spread is flat so I presume these are examples of lay-flat binding. But I am no expert!
There would have to be an extra lip to provide for perfect binding ( so as to not disrupt the gully on the pop-up spreads. The lip would be tipped to both sides of the spread to allow for grind off and gluing/binding.
I love your Channel! I feel lucky to have find it! A question...commercial pop up book are handmade? or, better... I think cutting is laser cut but what about gluing? thank you!
hello, i love your tutorials and I have learned a lot from them. I have one small issue with this tutorial that I am trying to understand. The top part, the 2 blue strips that you connect at 9:00 in the video - once you close the card a fold is created , same in the white book, once you opened it I could see that there is also small fold there under the flower at 1:42 in the video. But when you open the flamingo there is no such fold and I am really trying hard to understand what was different technique there because it look more clean . I am trying to test the flamingo, could you please tell me how this was done? what is the difference? thanks a lot for all this vids and your help
Hi Nadav, I'm glad you're enjoying the tutorials - it seems you are really exploring them thoroughly. On the flamingo model there is no need for the extra folds because the two struts (the blue strips on my model) are shorter and stuck closer to the centre - the result is that the flat bit (the wings of the flamingo and the pink piece on my model) don't get pulled down so far, don't open up so wide, don't go really flat but stay in the shape of a gully when the base is flat..
The underlying structure of the lotus design is based on this mechanism (Tutorial 28) - though in the lotus design the stalk of the flower is much shorter........ In the tutorial the top of the flower is just a flat surface (with a crease down the middle). In the lotus design this flat surface is used to raise the type of flower design that's explained in Tutorial 18 at 6.22......In the lotus design there are several layers of petals, there are two of these flowers one inside the other and then additional petals built onto the "branches" that push up the underlying shape....... I'm sorry I can't make a video giving a more comprehensive explanation as we are no longer filming new videos. I'm sure if you follow the two tutorials (28 and 18) and then experiment you will be able to make some very pleasing flower designs.
If you make it you'll understand how it works....In essence there are two parts to the mechanism - the center of the stalk (which is attached to the base at the central gully), as the base opens this is pushed up and as the base closes it is pulled down. - the sleeve (attached to the parallel-fold), as the base opens this is pulled down and as the base closes it is pushed up. The mechanism uses these opposing movements to open and close the flower.....Try making it!

Can I do the flower in more than one layer? I also want to make the petal layers open gradually, one by one not all at once,do I need a roll inside?

Very Nice!
May I know how thick (gsm) is required to do a pop up card?
Card wright and glue are covered in Tutorial 1.

Yes, they are mechanically printed and cut but then all assembled by hand.
thank you! pop up is a fantastic world!
thanks so much !

Is this covered in you upcoming new edition? I have already pre-ordered on Amazon for May 2019 publishing date.
No - Sorry. The new edition is a reprint of the book with a new cover but exactly the same contents.
Thanks for the update.
