So things like "each one of you could have is religion" "you must not be the attackers" and so on, are abroged by most of the Surat of the Sword, with verses like "Subjugate the infidels or kill them". So, they decided, when 2 verses goes agains each other, the oldest is abrogated by the newest. The more common example of contradiction in Quran, it's about alcohol. Firstly, nothing against it. Then, it was restricted "Don't pray if you are drunk", and finally it was completely forbidden. Since the newest verse about alcohol was the one about it's interdiction, so Muslim are forbid to drink alcohol.

Anywhere, in Quran when it is said "to kill" or "to fight" it's always used a reciprocal verb means if they attack you then attack back, if they fight with you then fight back. And when you overcome you still can not kill them. You have to give them security, and you would charge them Tax called Jizya in return. This tax is for their protection and them not to serve in the Muslim army. This tax jizya is a lesser percentage of what a Muslim would pay to his own government.

Let me add an important point that most people I think are missing in the case of the holy Quran. The book didn't magically appear to prophet Mohammed. It was revealed gradually, over the course of 23 years, which each verse or group of verses revealed at a particular place, time, and situation that either describes it, predicts it, or an order to deal with it. Verses weren't revealed in the order we see now in the book. They were scattered. So some chapters took years to be fully reveales by Allah. People memorized them and then decided to write them in a book. That is why you need to look at the context of a verse before judging it

However such verses in the Quran regardless of context are still part of Allah's eternal speech. And are still applicable today. If the Quran really was divine revelation and is as clear as it claims to be, then why not give the context in the text itself? As a Christian, I am called to love my enemies. Who are my enemies? The ones who would persecute me. And Allah for all eternity saying Slay the infidels wherever you find them, isn't helping. There's an ideology that puts a death penalty on your head for leaving and there's one that doesn't. There's one that tells you to love your enemies and there's one that tells you to kill them. Historically speaking verses like Surah 9:28-29 which says fight those who do not believe in Allah nor the Last day, though it was revealed during a time of war, was enforced on Jews and Christians by the contemporaries of Muhammed in order to humiliate them. Ok, let me explain it to u, the asbabun nuzul for the verses that u r talking about is because the non muslim break the peace treaty, at first they don’t know what to do until God send this revelation to allowed them to defend themselves, that’s why it stated in the Qur’an “kill all of them until they repent to God or Pay Jizya (Tax)”. If the non muslims never break the peace treaty I think this revelation wouldn’t be send by God

Quran is full of contradiction, and the Ulemas had to find a solution to deal with those contradictions.
So, they decided, when 2 verses goes agains each other, the oldest is abrogated by the newest.
The more common example of contradiction in Quran, it's about alcohol. Firstly, nothing against it. Then, it was restricted "Don't pray if you are drunk", and finally it was completely forbidden.
Since the newest verse about alcohol was the one about it's interdiction, so Muslim are forbid to drink alcohol.

Let me add an important point that most people I think are missing in the case of the holy Quran.
The book didn't magically appear to prophet Mohammed. It was revealed gradually, over the course of 23 years, which each verse or group of verses revealed at a particular place, time, and situation that either describes it, predicts it, or an order to deal with it.
Verses weren't revealed in the order we see now in the book. They were scattered. So some chapters took years to be fully reveales by Allah. People memorized them and then decided to write them in a book.
That is why you need to look at the context of a verse before judging it

Just to add clarification, even this verse that was said about the pagans was said in a time of war in a state of war, and it is restricted by another verse in Surat At-Tawbah, verse 6, which says: “And if anyone of the polytheists asks for your protection ˹O Prophet˺, grant it to them so that they may hear the Word of Allah, then escort them to a place of safety, for they are a people who have no knowledge.”

These ayat was after the battle of ohod which was a defeat and some new Muslim was afraid and talked about being both muslim and a Jew or muslim and a Christian to be in the safe - in my opinion it was very humanly expected reaction - so those ayat was to correct such behaviour.
A little context. The Madina was a mix community of Jew, Christians and muslim under the Muslims rule. And they didn't like that one bit and some of them was conspiring against the newly appeared muslims but to no results.

However such verses in the Quran regardless of context are still part of Allah's eternal speech. And are still applicable today. If the Quran really was divine revelation and is as clear as it claims to be, then why not give the context in the text itself?
As a Christian, I am called to love my enemies. Who are my enemies? The ones who would persecute me. And Allah for all eternity saying Slay the infidels wherever you find them, isn't helping. There's an ideology that puts a death penalty on your head for leaving and there's one that doesn't. There's one that tells you to love your enemies and there's one that tells you to kill them. Historically speaking verses like Surah 9:28-29 which says fight those who do not believe in Allah nor the Last day, though it was revealed during a time of war, was enforced on Jews and Christians by the contemporaries of Muhammed in order to humiliate them. You can read that in Tafsir Ibn Kathir. In that case we can see that as long as Allah commands it, it will be enforced. I hope you understand where I'm coming from 👍

Chaper 9 is Sura Al Tawbah. This is a Surah detailing the rules of “Armed Fighting” for the believing Muslims

9:5 says:

This verse is used frequently to criticize and ridicule the simple Muslims with weak Quranic knowledge. We are accused of believing in a Quran that orders us to capture and besiege and kill the polytheists. Whenever critics bring verses of the Quran to demonstrate that Islam is violent, that it sanctions Muslims to kill non-Muslims (as claimed by them), they do a cut and paste of a verse and try hide its context. They don’t show the previous and the verses after, what it actually says.

Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous [who fear Him].
And this is the verse immediately following it

And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah . Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.
If you just read this much you will understand the true meaning of 9:5

Another verse which has caused much confusion is 9:5. This is the first Quranic verse mentioned in the fatwa of Usama bin Ladin. It is also a verse which has been referred to by Reverend Franklin Graham in his comments about the “wicked, violent” nature of Islam. Verse 9:5 says,
But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the polytheists (mushrikun) wherever you find them, seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every strategem [of war]. Contrary to what may be thought from a literal reading of this translation, this verse is not a kind of carte blanche to attack any and all non-Muslim peoples. Here again the issue of historical context is so crucial for understanding. Verse 9:5 was revealed specifically in relation to the Muslims fighting the idolaters of Makkah. The Makkan idolaters are referred to in the Quran by the technical term “mushrikun” (sing. “mushrik”). This term comes from a three letter Arabic root “sh-r-k” which means “to associate” or “take a partner unto something,” so that the word mushrikun literally means, “those who take a partner [unto God],” that is to say, “polytheists” or “idolaters.” It should be noted, therefore, that the injunction in this verse to fight against the “polytheists” does not pertain to either Jews or Christians from the point of view of Islamic Law. Interestingly, Jews and Christians are never referred to within the Quran by the term mushrikun. They have, in fact, a very different “status” or “title” according to the Quran which, when not addressing them as individual communities, often refers to the two groups together by the technical term, ahl al-kitab or “People of the Book,” meaning people who have been given a book or scripture by God other than the Muslims. Given these facts, it is interesting that this verse should be cited by Bin Ladin in the context of a declaration calling on Muslims to fight Jews and Christians, particularly since this verse says nothing about Jews, Christians or the People of the Book in general. This being the case, the fatwa’s use of 9:5 represents a misappropriation of this verse to an end other than the one intended from its established historical context of fighting the “polytheist” Arabs, who were neither Christians nor Jews. Given this context, this verse does not, in fact, show Islam to be a “wicked, violent” religion, as Franklin Graham would like us to believe, but shows that Islam gave to Muslims the right to defend themselves against those who would not let them worship God, a right, incidentally, which is protected by the United States Constitution.

Ok, let me explain it to u, the asbabun nuzul for the verses that u r talking about is because the non muslim break the peace treaty, at first they don’t know what to do until God send this revelation to allowed them to defend themselves, that’s why it stated in the Qur’an “kill all of them until they repent to God or Pay Jizya (Tax)”. If the non muslims never break the peace treaty I think this revelation wouldn’t be send by God
