Mandarin is not a compulsory language. POL is enshrined in federal law. Mess media broadcasting has moral obligation to uphold constitutional rights moreover, sub-titles enriches viewers capacity and helps translate truthful message.
Malaysian chinese about 24% and prefer to speak in their mother tongue. Mandarin is used as a communication tool only in between dialects. Only china force people to speak in mandarin yet many minority communities secretly speaks their mother tongue when the authorities not monitoring. Singapore is another country which encourage mandarin yet most singaporean speaks in english. Some people prefer to learn other foreign language as it can help with their profession and promotion including those from chinese university. I recall there is also tamil, malay, bahasa indonesia radio channels in china. Some chinese are so good in tamil language and help to translate premier Mao's chinese books into tamil and vise-verse. So, please don't disregard other foreign languages. Anyone who is truthful can easily make a living. We also have german, french, japanese and spanish technical institutes in malaysia their language is an asset to our country. By the way mandarin is an official language at the UN assembly and nobody disrespect the language. You need to be mindful regarding other language with due respect. Lately, i understand that some teachers are teaching mandarin and japanese as a additional subject in tamil schools and some chinese schools start learning tamil language. In fact malay teachers are send to china to master mandarin before teaching this language to malay students at schools.
