Yes. I think the difference between Ferry and say, Dylan ( who Ferry describes as his idol) and say Leonard Cohen, is that Ferry very much wrote as a man of his specific time; he recognized and wrote in the current popular culture. As such, his songs are powerful and poetic documents of his time, while it could be said the Dylan and Cohen wrote for all time.
Ferry has more in common with another great poet, Joni Mitchell. This all said, I include Ferry in my top 5 pop song writers and hey, that voice!

How Bob Clearmountain, in his tender twenties, was able to rock the music world to such a degree is phenomenal. He really is a wizard, yet with such command, he is one of the most soft spoken, unassuming people you could ever hope to meet.

I bought this album in 2018 at a Value store after noticing how intriguing the cover was. Read a little bit of the info on the back and saw it was made in 82. I figured I'll just put myself in the context of that year and see how it goes. Heard the first track and immediately recognized it so I was pleasantly surprised, but what happens when you continue listening to the entire album is hard to describe. It is spiritual and timeless, you are left feeling a thousand years wiser. It truly is, as they say, a masterpiece.

Warren, I've listened to Avalon probably 500+ times over the years. Your production contacts add real depth to your stories, the 75 foot stairwell reverb discussion was fascinating. A great tribute to an incredible album & band. Roxy in all their incarnations/periods were artists in the true sense of the word. They were expressing ideas, trying new things, not sticking to the accepted ways of doing things and the results were amazing. Really brilliant musicians. The engineering also stands out for the quality that complimented the music.
I saw Ferry in I think 87 in Germany. Absolutely loved it. When they did Avalon and Yanick Étienne sang her part she just kind of slipped onto the stage from behind the curtain. You could hear her before you could see her. Absolutely incredible voice. Crystal clear and powerful. Really made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Sadly she died March this year aged 64.
Thanks for this video Warren, Roxy are a real fave of mine for many years!
P.S. That part of the UK, the north east, has produced some incredible artists. Here's a short list:

I remember when I first played the CD in my recording studio. Better said, the song "Avalon". LOUD. When I heard the tape hiss in the very beginning, I smiled. Obviously it was recorded hi speed without Dolby, and Clearmountain did not want to hide that analogue hiss....And then the percussion and drum presence showed why. Avalon became the new calibration "meter" for the big studio monitors in many studios I bet. And Neil Jason on bass... what a underrated monster.

Love your rant about out of step critics. Avalon is one of my all-time favourites. I clearly remember listening to the title track Avalon played very loud in an empty club, a few days after my daughter was born. It sent shivers down my spine. As you started Warren it is and will always be an Roxy's all-time magnus opus.

Great video and timeline! A friend turned me on to Roxy's first album and I've been a fan ever since. I was fortunate to see them in Cleveland when they toured in support of the Country Life album. They opened with Prairie Rose, and as the intro built up, Bryan Ferry calmly sauntered out stage right in a sequined evening jacket, as if he knew the exact number of steps required to get to center stage without hurrying. At the crescendo of "Texas" he was spot on at the mic with "Oh, that's where I belong it seems to me...". Great show, the band was tight, and every time I hear Prairie Rose now I re-see that cool, silky smooth entrance.

I reckon I have listened to Avalon in its entirety probably 1000 times. The 2003 SACD 5.1 release prompted to me to build a dedicated room with a Trinnov processor to extract the very best transparency and precision from the Sacd, coming home from a tough workday it always transports me to an ethereal place and never ceases to relax me. Surprisingly enough the bonus track Always Unknowing is my favorite, never can understand why it was not included aside from on the 5.1 sacd, Neil Hubbard's guitar work towards the end is otherworldly.
The cover for Avalon was shot here in Ireland at a hunting lodge overlooking a lake in Connemara, County Galway. Ferry would spend time here prior to the recording in the Power Station and Nassau and wrote much of Avalon at Crumlin Lodge. The lodge was owned by Ferry's then wife's Lucy's father Patrick Helmore. The model with the Helmet is Lucy. Sadly the Hunting Lodge burned down in 1997 and Mr Helmore died in the Blaze. It was a remote wooden Lodge built by the British military in the late 1800's as a officers retreat. Sadly Lucy also died here in County Clare in 2018.

I drove from the middle of Washington State to San Francisco for last nights Roxy Music‘s show! It also was Bryan Ferry’s 77th Birthday! It was worth driving 1500 miles. The first long trip in my Tesla Model 3 which performed beautifully. I finally got to see them; it only took 4 and a half decades. The show was fantastic and they played the one song I was hoping for: If There is Something. Wasn’t quite as amazing as the version on Viva because there was no Eddie Johnson on violin and also Andy didn’t use a wah wah on his woodwinds but it was still monumentally epic! I hope you’re seeing them in LA Warren. You won’t have to travel as far as I did!

I bought Roxy Music's first album when it came out and to this day it's one of my fave albums and to my ears the best, freshest and most original debut album ever. To me they weren't quite the same after Eno left and Roxy version 2 didn't really connect with me, the songwriting didn't engage me in the same way - but Avalon caught my ear with its astonishing production and sound. A huge influence on the music of the '80s. This was around the time when I started noticing the name Bob Clearmountain on all the best-sounding records coming out . . . great video, thanks Warren!
