Ahoy everyone!
My name is Nike and I have been living and sailing on my sailboat Karl since 2013. After a massive refit marathon, I finally cast off the lines and learnt to solo sail my 37-foot Reinke Super 10 that I called "Karl". I am publishing videos (at the moment every two weeks) about the ups and downs of living, repairing and sailing my boat.
Since January 2022, I have a new permanent crew member: my furry friend Boga. When I started out, I did not know much about boat repair or solo sailing. Since I am still out there, I hope that my story inspires others, to chase their dreams, even if they might think they are not cut out for it. There is always a way, so I'll see you out there!

I don't miss sweating on that dock, it's a beautiful place but boats are made for moving and its always had to feel 'stuck'... it is also incredibly hard to juggle multiple jobs - being the filmmaker/youtuber and doing something good for the world and maintaining a boat - I know some days it is hard! You are an inspiration though and I know you'll figure out what is best for you, beat that burnout and get back to doing what you love (what ever it is you decide that is!) x
Niki good to take some time off and let your soul rest. Also, and I think a lot of TH-camrs miss this, we don't watch to see adventure, but we do watch to see you. To see you live and experience everything. To get to know you like you are our friend, because that is what we are missing in our lives. Lots of love and support in your time off.
Nike, I have followed you for many years.I am in my 70s and enjoy so much the adventures. You have to do what makes you happy, hopefully you will be back charged up to continue entertaining us with your wonderful life and resilient charm.

I'd say that- Karl's permanent lackings as a true cruiser, then COVID, and then your foot injury, had you tied to Panama. And that the plastics recycling was an effort to make being tied in Panama into something worthwhile, after knowing in your heart that abandoning blue water sailing adventures was the only real option. So yes, life evaluation time!
Thanks for sharing your journey with us. I could sense your growing workload was having an effect on you, and think you're needing this reset and simplification to restructure your life back towards your original direction a little more. Whatever you choose and whichever direction you go, we wish you well!

Here's my two cents: as for healthy, you look amazing and have that healthy "glow" about you! As for taking a break: we all need a break now and then. I'm on break from responsibility now. I'll be in Italy Friday followed by Albania, Croatia, France and Spain! You're welcome to join me and my brother on the Camino del Norte. We'll be walking 520 miles beginning April 29th! A good long walk is good for the soul!
Yeah starting a company especially an NGO is consuming and it does take 2-3-5- years before in can kind of run on "autopilot". So if you can find some people to outsource some of the work that make plenty of sense. I love that you talk to Karl and gave him a kiss before leaving! 🙂

Yeah I definitely underestimated the work load a bit and (as so often) thought I could squeeze more into my days than I actually could. But hopefully with a bit of restructuring, I will be able to move things into a sustainable flow.

Yes, that’s true. It’s not something one can hurry. In my first attempt, I tried to hurry it a bit but then I noticed I had to slow down a notch ☺️👍

Scarcity leads to agency. You've had adventure, you evolved, now as the world is going as it is these days, no problem with enjoying where we're at, hope you enjoy the venture home and family for as long as you want.

Sailing inward is to rediscover the harbor from which one embarked. Whitman would have admired your journey back to the essence, your attunement to the inner winds. The Stoics would remind you: "It is by changing course, not by doubling the effort, that one finds the way." Your pause is not a retreat but a chart towards a new voyage, where each wave, each gust, becomes a lesson in harmony. Fair winds on this inward journey, where the only horizon is the joy you reclaim.🤞

Burnout is toxic. It hink you recognized the danger signals in time to do something about it before it would become really bad.

Everyone gets burn out when you travel/work/play. You have to take a break now and then just to collect yourself and take a much-needed break. I travel all over the country for work myself and truly enjoy what I do. But there are times I have to go home and just take a break for me.
