Do you know if your past messages from people get deleted when doing this? Have a small storage on phone so I couldn't save all the nice photos and laughs with the gifs.

It doesn't get deleted. Messenger uses its own cloud server to store things unlike WhatsApp

The best thing to do is just turn off notifications on your smart device for Facebook and messenger. If someone sends you a message that the best thing to do is just ignore it. Also opt out of receiving Facebook messages from unknown people. If your friends or people you know ask you why you're not answering messages just tell them that you don't answer because it is too distracting.
Then, limit your interactions with Facebook. Going on there every single day really won't help you. The best thing to do is go on there once or twice a week. There is such a thing as anti-social media.
