Winters here in northern Germany tend to be milder than in the south. On average, we have fewer frost days and less snow. Which is mostly due to our proximity to the sea. A bit more like Britain, in effect. And many areas of southern Germany have hills and mountains, which also makes winters there colder.

@@LaureninGermany That is not surprising. Some ancestors of todays British lived in Northern Germany before and the connections were close for long time. The priest of British Church here in Vienna was born in Hamburg, too or think about the Beatles. And we have also some old Celtic remnants in Germany even down in Bavaria - another link to the Islands and Western France. On the other hand there is also strong connection to Poland, Czech and Eastern Europe. In Saxonia, Thuringa and Northern Bavaria many places have still Slavic names, the Polish immigrants to Ruhr area are legend and German knights reached the Baltic states and settlers Romania and even Russia. The late 19th and 20th century divided us by cruel imperialistic and racist ambitions of "too late empire" Germany. The consequences last till now as we see in Eastern Europes' trauma and Brexit, but besides war, terror and borders, Europe has always also been a space of exchange and encounters. The end of Cold War enables us to reconsider our common and devided heritage. Sometimes it is absurd how it can surprise you with unexpected familiarities and alien feelings almost on the same spot.

Weisst du was Fakt ist, beim Norddeutschen Wetter?

In the north it rarely, *rarely*, gets actually cold, it's all about humidity and windchill instead. If you have something that breaks the wind a sweater is perfectly adequate to keep you warm. But, yes, we have our own version of a stiff upper lip: It's not windy if the sheep still have curls, and it's not raining unless fish are crossing the street.
Also remember: Exercise is the best jacket.

Temperature wise, the north is more mild than the south - precisely because of the sea climate. Heatwaves hit less hard, and it doesn't become as gold in the winter compared to the south. This doesn't just affect the coast, but the entire northern third of the country.

@@LaureninGermany weather reflects upon the nature of people ( German Reizklima). While most British people seem to be quite moderately tempered, Germans can freak out because of nothing. When I bumped into a car in the North of Britain, causing a car accident because the brakes of my own one were all down - the other driver was ever so nice and considerate. I didnt expect this from my experience back in Germany. People over here can snap quite easily. I guess Germans are half way between Dutch and Brits on one side and Slavic and Romance people on the other. They definitively have the same kind of passion for opera as the Italians. All over Germany small and mid size opera theatres... lol

There are not the Germans at all, the only thing of what unites the various population groups in Germany is High German, otherwise they are not a homogeneous mass where everyone thinks and acts the same way.
Among the various Germans there are people who love their car more than anything, for whom their car is almost a family member and primarily the men take care of this tin box more than their own children, which is significant and if their sanctuary is damaged, then Of course they are saddened to death. I guess, there are certainly things on the British Isles that upset these people as well. Otherwise, she shouldn't exaggerate so much and claim that theaters exist everywhere, whether small, medium-sized or large. That's maybe your experience, but that doesn't mean it happens everywhere.

While the climate here in Texas is known for being downright hot during summer, surprisingly some winters sound similar to your area and can actually be extremely cold! Some of us are simply not made for freezing weather. ☃The Germans do indeed know how to do winter. Some of the rest of us... not so much!

    Liebe Lauren,

The UK can do extreme weather as well. I remember a winter I spent with my partner in London. It was so absolutely fricking cold, I barely left the house and that says something because I live near the alps and use my bicycle all year round to go to work. Uh and don't get me start on the weather in Wales, It changes so fast that I usually layer up, no matter if in winter or summer. It is windy at first, half an hour later it rains and another half an hour later you are dying from a heatstroke. Rinse and repeat. ;) I remember talking to a cab driver in Cologne a few years ago and he told me that his kids ( 5 and 7 years old) have never seen snow their entire life, I told him the longest I remember having snow was more than 6 months in 2007, where the first snow fell around the 24th October and the last snow on the ground was around the end of April, that was something he could not comprehend, while I can't comprehend living somewhere where kids don't have seen or played in the snow for 7 years.

    • @LaureninGermany
      @LaureninGermany  ปีที่แล้ว +1

It´s true .... but I think the difference is, when it is extreme in Britain, we admit it! For the Germans, it´s normal! And they make me drive in it! Hi Lauren!
Yes, that winter weather in merry old Krautland… The nasty thing about it is that often enough, there is no suitable clothing. Germany doesn't have just one winter. There basically are two climate zones colliding here, the oceanic and continental climate. As great masses of water preserve their heat rather well, oceans vary in temperature only little between summer and winter. Land masses on the other hand can get could on their surface rather quickly. Cold air is heavier, so great masses of air lumber over large continents in winter, which causes air pressure to rise. In high air pressure, you have less clouds. Clouds, being water, trap infrared radiation, thus actually form a heat shield. With them squeezed and frozen out off the sky, the chilling is even accelerated as the remaining warmth just radiates off into space. That is why continental climate is extreme in the high seasons of summer and winter, extremely hot or cold.
Only today Kachelmannwetter are discussing a Luftmassengrenze, a border of air masses over Germany again, where Atlantic cyclonic systems and eastern European/Asian fed anticyclonic systems may bring loads of downcasts. No one can tell where that border will be: Further to the south-east or north or… 🤔
Bavaria, where you live, is way further into the continent and thus affected by continental climate more strongly. The weather there accordingly tends to be more extreme. I live near Cologne, which is most of the time dominated by Atlantic climate which hardly brings extended real frost. I much prefer this, actually! Having worked in the open in a chilling strong wind of -16°C in Bavaria years ago, I was finally convinced that winter really is something that's nice only on kitschy postcards. Being able to bend your fingers is a skill I don't like losing! The flip side is that this here region has lots more rain. It may come as a surprise that clouds in continents leak less, but that's weather! 🤷‍♂
And, well, Northern Germany also has a more oceanic climate, obviously, consisting mainly of coast. So despite being closer to a pole, their climate is more moderate than Bavaria's. You don't want to wear too thick clothes there in winter storms either, or you'll find yourself in Poland before you know it.
Enough talk about friggin' winter. If we keep thinking of summer it may return sooner! 🤗

Cosy it may be when you can stay indoors all the time. From a chap who grew up in Siberia, I learnt that they stop doing hard work outside there when temperatures drop below zero to protect their health. Germans on the other hand apparently are supposed to feel no pain.

Most, virtually all of the English speaking world says it with a hard K. I'm guessing the Oxford dictionary had that pronunciation for Wales...and possibly Scotland but they don't even understand each other! I was surprised to hear you use two pronunciations and not the one that is by far most common.

@@TheRagingPlatypus I learned RP as part of my training. It’s useful for being clear, but it is - well, received. And therefore not always representative of the living language.

@@LaureninGermany Funny...but how often did lichen come up in your RP training? It's not exactly an everyday word.

Es gibt kein schlechtes Wetter, es gibt nur unangemessene Kleidung. Da muß man nur jemanden fragen, der in Sibirien wohnt. ;)
There is no such thing as bad weather, there is just inappropriate clothing. All you have to do is ask someone who lives in Siberia. ;)
