    Free soloing is far from being a widely practiced aspect of climbing and the number of climbers who could be described as 'soloists' is pretty small. The number of people who can claim to have soloed a Patagonian peak is even smaller; and that's not just because of the region's notoriously bad weather. Earlier this year, Squamish-based climber Brette Harrington wrote her name into the history books when she free climbed 'Chiaro di Luna' (5.11a) becoming the first woman ever not just to free solo this route, but to free solo any route in the Fitz Roy Massif. We were lucky enough to grab a word with Brette at the 2015 Arc'teryx Alpine Academy where we found out more about this astonishing ascent.

    Marc and Brett’s must of had some really serious bond . I’m thinking about all of the life and death situations they shared and living together in the razors edge. What an amazing, beautiful relationship. Horrible loss losing Marc

    Goal for this summer: join a climbing gym and get started with climbing. Yes, at the age of 40. I may not get to climb thousand-meters-high mountains but any hill will do. :-)) I've spent practically 39 of my 40 years fearing everything. I'm done being scared and feeling useless for physical activities.

      Su Tash you got this I spent most my life in extreme sports. I had to stop for over 5 years cause f injuries I’m 31 now and started climbing and I love it. Honestly the best advice man climb a lot see if they have month pass at your gym Join a group climb a lot and get your forearms strong. It will take awhile and you will know when your ready to push to the next limit. And learn to trust your belayer and your rope. Rope does stretch and it feels weird but it’s not bad man :) and tape on your fingers in certain spots will help with blisters. I am strong for all climbs I try I just have to stop cause my forearms giveout so I hope that helps :)

      I’m 39 and just started last month. I’ve always been in good shape so that helps but either way climbing is just a ton of fun.

    When you take off to the mountains for few weeks at a time how do you bring food supply to last the trip?
    Is there a beginners guide with lots of information because I'm really interested to learn.

    • @totalyruben
      @totalyruben 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Its all about bringing food that lasts and is light to carry it all depends on what type of climbing you want to do if its multi pitch climbing and your camping over night on a ledge on the mountain then you carry that with you and hoist it up using ropes or you have a camp site nearby that you will keep your food at if you're doing smaller stuff search on youtube using the key words or google you may come across something or even better yet use forums and ask a question theres bound to people who have a wealth of knowledge and you can't beat your local climbing gym or shop for advice also! hope this has helped spark some ideas!

      You can be the best climber in the world and know you can climb that route super easy like you would a tree,... but you just can’t predict when that “bomber” piece of rock that your pulling on decides to snap off.
      Glad I roped up ;)
      May I suggest you try free water soloing instead???

      If you're still alive, make sure you climb the route a bunch of times beforehand and know exactly every single move you'll do

    • @bboucharde
      @bboucharde 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scared because one slip and it is a free fall to either a lifetime of disability (if less than maybe 30' drop) or death---that impact must hurt like hell, but then no memory of it....... I am really impressed with her, but this is just asking for death...... but apparently that is a key element in the drug-like high.......
