      I leave a full bowl of seed mix in one dish put some fresh fruits in a separate bowl in the cage for foraging and tend to give snacks by hand when I have mine out like grapes or palm fruit extract on a dry banana she loves that stuff

    • @FlockofFive
      @FlockofFive  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We keep a constant supply of pellets in the cage (no wet veggies or fruits due to risk of mold and the food spoiling). With respect to the wet food, many people do once a day.

    Is it okay if birds eat vegetables that are not organic? I was thinking of using a homemade vinegar or baking soda spray to use on the fruits and vegetables and leave it on for some minutes before rinsing them. Someone has insight on this? Im talking about the produce from the grocery store. Theres the EWG dozen list of what to buy organic. But for non-organic items would it be enough to rinse them with water?

    Provide smaller pieces if you want your grey to eat everything and not through it to the ground. Those pellets look big. Try cockatiel size for african grey parrots. It may look small, but all of it will get eaten.

  • @windinternationalfilmfesti5333

    our African grey likes meshed pallets to be very warm in the microwave.Do you suggest she eats like that way? She has started plucking her feather and around her neck still is empty.She is free in-house and never wanted to be alone.During working times she is still up with us till 5 Am .If we put her in ed room she flies and tries getting out to be with us.Please suggest best ideas to help her to e healthier and not to pluck.Another question is do you think we should get an opposite sex African parrot for her or she will stop talking after?

    • @FlockofFive
      @FlockofFive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! It seems like you have quite the sticky situation there. Ideally you would have your adult parrot eat non-mashed foods, but if she is already a plucker, I will leave the mashed food as it is to not add enough stress for now. 12h sleep is essential for parrots and disturbing that cycle could definitely lead to behavioral issues, such as plucking. It would be ideal if you could keep her in her own room/ cage that is dark - this means the room lights should be completely off, or the cage should be covered with a dark breathable cover. Ideally this 12h cycle should be in sync with natural sunrise and sunset. If you live in an area where she doesn't get a lot of natural sun, purchase UVB light for your bird and keep it on for that natural "daylight time" when the sun is the strongest. It should be 4-6h at a minimum. Getting your parrot a mate is a very personal decision, yes - it is possible to lose that human-bird bond afterwards. Personally, that would not be my first choice. If she started plucking recently, it may be a sign of a health issue and I would take her to an avian vet to make sure everything is alright. The avian vet should be able to give you advice on behavioral issues as well. Best of luck to you!

    Your should really change the romaine hearts with kale, dandelion greens, or other dark leafy greens because lettuces really don't have any nutritional value.

    • @FlockofFive
      @FlockofFive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Romaine hearts are good sources of vitamine A! I would have loved to add kale but the store was out of them that day, but yes they are usually in our chop :). For some reason my fids decided they hate anything associated with dandelion :( .. I will keep trying though, one day! haha

    how do you take parrots to drive with you in the car?Any special things they can sit and be safe and enjoy riding?

    • @FlockofFive
      @FlockofFive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! We actually have a video on taking our birds out for a drive - please check our youtube channel for this video. This is quite the controversial issue, some people say you should only travel with your bird with the cage seat-belted in. Others say it is okay to travel with your bird roaming free in the car. We are somewhat in the inbetween. If you have a driver and another person sitting beside you to watch the birds and have them on a short leash - I think it is okay to have your birds out while driving as long as you are not on a highway and on familiar roads. There are things you can purchase, like window perches to make the trip more enjoyable for your birds. Otherwise, we think they should be in a cage with a seat belt. Please check out the video on our channel for more details!

    FYI most baby carrots have been dipped in wax to retain color, if you are going to use them you need to plunge into boiling water for a minute to melt wax and then rinse, just rinsing doesn't remove the wax.

      Hi Jad! We had the same problem with our african grey. The trick is to try again and again and again, there is no other solution! You can try different vegetables though. Our AG LOVES hot peppers, and will eat anything with hot peppers mixed in. Try different combinations of vegetables - for our 3 birds, the favorites are microwaved yam, carrots (juilenne) and hot peppers. Hope this helps!

    My DYH Amazon likes fried eggs with a little cheddar cheese melted onto it. Then a fresh slice of apple. Sunflower seeds and almonds in the shell for lunch.For dinner anything with pasta, chicken noodle soup, chicken with veggies with blue cheese or ranch. A few black olives, or green olives , a long piece of celery with the leaves on the end smeared with peanut butter. He likes beef but I can't eat beef anymore so he eats whatever we eat for dinner as long as it is warm.. During summer, peas and carrots out of the garden,fresh broccoli, blue berries ect...Once a month a spoon full of oat meal, pancakes, or french toast. He also gets a lot of treats like cashews, almonds ,chips and crackers. He likes a variety and gets burned out if you feed him the same thing over again...

    • @FlockofFive
      @FlockofFive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Evi! The current guideline is to feed your parrots a 70-80% pellet diet, with the remainder consisting mostly of vegetables, and very little treats. We do not feed our parrots any seeds as they are fatty and have little nutritional value. I do know some parrot owners who feed a bit of seed as treat during training.

    • @FlockofFive
      @FlockofFive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Leonor, that's a great question.
      It's harder to clean inside the cage than outside of the it . If you leave any chop inside the case, mold can grow and the birds can develop a fungal infection. Pellets generally grow mold less quickly than chop and they also are easier to see inside a cage, so they can be fed inside the cage with a greater degree of safety. But you will still want to throw out and replace their pellets daily. Aspergillosis is one of the biggest killers of parrots.

      Hello! Thank you so much for your reply and watching our videos. Yes, we do get requests to remove the music a lot. Sadly this was done because our video equipment is a simple camera - unfortunately it picked up the sound of our air purifiers such that the audio was barely usable. Then, we thought it would be a good idea to use a sound editing software to try to remove the background noise - that was a mistake. It morphed the audio which was partially fixed by adding background music. That is why all of our videos have the music in the background and unfortunately, it is not something that can be simply removed. The series of videos you see here was a small project for us that we made to help other parronts who are newer - a sort of quick introduction guide, if you will. We are hoping to remake these using better video equipment when funds and time become available. In the meanwhile, we appreciate your patience and for your interest, it means the world to us
