i am in the same situation but i think the important thing to consider when doing this is to know if this action will cause suffering in my parents and if the answer is no then do it... but i am still mentoring my Christian parents on Buddhism and trying to help them understand why this would be so good for me and i wont do it until i know that they wont spiral into a depression because of my actions.
Actually, some traditions like paauk, now let you answer Christian instead of "yes or no". Then everyone can legally proceed with the ordination as usual.
I cried listen to your story bhante while you ask permission to mom dad it was touching and I am also 29yr old now want to ordain but don't know how can I get permission from my mother this story of yours inspire me alottt thank you so much bhante for this video 🪷🪷🪷🙏🙏🙏
As someone who is over 30 years a monastic, may I suggest a more gentle, loving approach of a long country walk. If you truly love your parents, and they truly love you too, they will want you to be happy and will end up expressing that love. That will be your permission. And over time, with patience and prayers, they will come to value your decision. My own father said 20 years later, just before he died, "I think there's some benefit to what you do" which was a 180° turn around from his previous attitude. Isn't this process of obtaining permission a chance to show our refuge in the Dharma and by practising it, find and follow our spiritual vocation?
