I appreciate your work and effort and like your style. What people fail to factor in is that we are playing a synth with 100s of of ways to change sounds. Comparing presets is meaningless, unless they are REALLY bad. Sounds too thin? Turn a knob add some bass.. add chorus.. add (effect) until it suits you. That is what a synth is about. If you want to compare static presets then do it on cheap keyboards with no editing onboard. The same thing happens in the guitar world where people compare amps; both real and modeled. They never turn any knobs, it's just plug in and listen to the presets. Then claim one thing is better than the other. Ease of use and intuitive controls should be the main selling points. I hope new firmware on the Montage allows 'finger painting' editing like on the Fantom. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the comment! Many people just want to know what the presets sound like, what are they starting from. They may not want to tweak or change anything and that's fine. This is something I try to explain to people about every instrument. The same thing goes for guitars. This goes for everyElectronica instrument ever made. The difference you will notice will be in acoustic instruments, because different bills, different styles, different words can make a difference with the sound. But again, in recording it you can use the Q and a fax and everything you need to make it sound exactly like any other instrument in the world. I always felt this way since I was a kid. @@seeingwithheart no I actually bought another Montage but have since sold both the Fantom and Montage. I currently run a kurzweil forte and a midi controller and use Kontakt and Roland Cloud ( mainly zenology ) which is a very cost effective rig.
@@scottl926 Thanks for getting back with me so quickly Scott! I used to own a 2600XS with all the modules and an 8gig internal HD. I had it for many years but ultimately sold it because I didn't like the action. I have a Yamaha Grande so I'm looking for a keyboard that feels close to that. I have a Montage 8 and love the acoustic instruments and the functionality of the Super Knob. However, I'm not crazy about the action. I'm considering buying a Fantom because of the PHA-50 action, the V-Piano and its many other really powerful features. I own an RD2000 (that I'll sell) so I already know I like how it feels and the V-Piano sounds. I'm wondering why you sold your Fantom and Montage? In the states, the Kurzweil Forte is quite expensive $5000. What MIDI controller are you using? I use Kontakt but am not familiar with the Roland Cloud. I've had two 6 week visits to Australia and loved it. Where are you? I'm grateful for your input! Mitch
@@seeingwithheart Hi Mitch, I ultimately sold both due to COVID, and lack of gigs here in Brisbane QLD. I didn't have to but felt with a good quality audio interface and Roland Cloud (not to mention other VSTs) I get all the sounds from the Fantom, along with extra sounds from Kontakt and synths like Dune 3 for less money. Im using a novation sl mk2 which is a good synth action, but as I'm not a piano player the Forte action is fine for Piano stuff I play. The only thing lacking slightly is the FM which the montage excelled at but the Kurzweil isnt bad for FM just note quite as bright and clear.
No I like Yamaha's saxophone sounds because I have them in Halion 6 but I am looking into also buying a hardware equivalent to Halion 6. I am seriously considering either a black Tyros 4 or a Tyros 5 but when I pointed out that arranger keyboards can be used in midi production and that I have no intention of using the auto accompaniments in a reply someone recommended maybe a Montage or a Fantom would be a better and more cost effective purchase. I prefer these saxophones compared to the Kontakt factory library which I think sound even more fake and low budget. I also think these sort of sounds are still usable on my Roland sound modules like my SC-88 Pro or my U-220, personally if I wanted a Fantom I would buy the module version even though it's an older model. To be honest I have a lot more trust in hardware. I think Halion 6's alto sax is a maybe little smoother in comparison to Montage but Montage and even the lower cost MX series uses the same Tenor sax samples that are in Halion 6. Saxophones are going to sound synthetic no matter what you use but unfortunately as an amateur I don't have a budget to hire session musicians so I have to make the best of what I think is the next best thing. It's cool that the Montage includes the Sweet flute. I personally prefer the acoustic instruments over the synth sounds and think everything except for drums generally sounds more consistent on a workstation or a sound module compared to a lot of VST instruments. Maybe if the black Tyros 4 sells out I might consider either a Montage or even a smaller MX keyboard. In black the Montage/MX looks unobtrusive and very reminiscent to the Yamaha SY series, most of the AWM2 sounds in Montage are similar to Halion 6 plus Montage/MX also has a built in FM synthesizer similar to the DX7 so with Montage you also get a 4 or 6 op FM synth in hardware in addition to mostly high quality AWM sounds. Montage would certainly be a welcome addition to Halion 6. I would definately choose Montage over a Genos.
I have heard the Tyros and other arrangers have higher quality sounds compared to even the workstations. I haven't used them myself to confirm but that always seems to be the information I come across.
@@SoundsAndGear Some of Halion 6's sounds were culled from Tyros 1, Tyros 2 and even many of the drum kits in Halion 6 sound like Tyros 3 and 4 drums. I think it's funny how arranger keyboards have more focus on realistic instruments compared to workstations. I'm just about to look at the Montage data list to see exactly what sounds and presets come pre-loaded on it.
Montage was generally more realistic. The Fantom sounds had way too much reverb and the vibrato was a bit artificial sounding. Both were Ok, but Montage was a step above for me.
No contest imo, Fantom pattern sequencer is better. I may eventually do piano sounds but everyone does those lol. I wanted to share the sounds I like checking out. Thanks for watching!
@@thomascook2535 Hmmm, if I want a dedicated workstation/sequencer it would be Fantom. But strictly for sounds and recording to something else (which is my workflow) probably Montage right now. I think Fantom needs a bit more in the acoustic range of sounds personally. But it's workflow is dope!
@@SoundsAndGear Yes.. Very right in acoustic range.... and the acoustic drums aren't good, but electronics drums sounds are fine from 808, 707 so on... Let's see what will drope this namm
The Fantom instantly sounded better. As soon as I heard the different sax sounds between the two, the difference was night and day. The montage sounds very artificial, it sounds like a synth trying to mimic real sounds, where as the Fantom sounds like the real sounds. The Fantom also has the more powerful technology packed into it so there’s no surprise that it sounds better.
@@ScottsSynthStuff Hahahaha, actually that may be accurate for most situations but not in my case lol. In this setup I usually keep one main board on the desk depending on what I'm focused on video/testing wise. So I was testing some things with the Montage (and like using it with my iPad which is attached to the desk) then decided to do some comparisons. Last week the Fantom was on the desk and the Montage was in the basement hahaha.
@9:35 “Every manufacturer has their strengths and weaknesses.” So for this video (5 🔈), I’m leaning more towards the Montage. For the selection you played the montage was more organic and subtle, where the Fantom was good but it had harmonics that were slightly overbearing. Good video as always, keep them coming. Lol, can we get the Kronos in the mix.
I tend to agree with you as well when it comes to these types of sounds. Though the Fantom had a few joints that were really nice! Man...I'd love to get a Kronos in the mix lol, one of these days, we'll see!
Roland goes with same thinking way like Korg Kronos you must working on every sound to get dound you want. and if you playing live gigs you get problem if you play Roland or Korg dat sounds you have created is nog working as you have on mind. Yamaha plug and play and be happy.
For woodwind sounds i would just go for my fantastic ol" Yamaha EX5 which blows my montage 6 away because of its VL synthesis engine, sampling wouldn't do it for these type of sounds, physical modeling is needed!
The saxophone is the most difficult sample to replicate and if you play it on a piano you're not gonna get the true articulations as if you played it through a wind controller such as an AE 30-Pro if you really wanna take it to the next level play Audio modeling's library where you could take the brass woodwinds and deliver unlimited articulations with the wind controller given you the dynamic buildup every arrangement of yesterday had. keyboards just just don't make it especially when it comes to internal sax sounds.
@@SoundsAndGear Could you tell me if both synthesizers were connected to the same audio systems? Otherwise, the results of the experiment were not entirely objective.
Which will explain all the vibrato on the Fantom. Gives the sound more movement. Leaving the Montage sounding stale, whereas the Montage needed some mod wheel action on those wind instruments too. Respect though

Also Korg will come out with a new Kronos soon - i think, can be important to do so also with it. Then - can be interessting to compare also with the Kurzweil PC4. If that you´ll have - that means this are the mostly important Workstations. Over that the sample librarys from clavia are also very interesting - ok the nord stage is no Workstation, but a great sounding Key, no ask. I think come out a new nord stage a time passes by... Wow! Your standards are quite high my friend. I the drum sounds on my MOXF, so I am thinking I may like them on the Montage. I have only tried the Montage in the music store. At the end of the day you have to get the tools that speak to you. What ever instrument you choose, just make amazing music.
@@paulallenMacca best is a very subjective term, depends on the type of piano sound you like. Some like Yamaha, some like Roland. Overall I prefer Yamaha personally for those types of sounds.
I like how you appreciate being inspired by the acoustic instruments without being so rigid about sounding exactly like them in every way. People should respect every tool for its own capabilities even when being used to pay homage to other instruments. It’s the same with pro musicians. We have our favorites the way pay respects to but we have our own sound.
You all know you want the FANTOM!!! Everyone that says the MONTAGE sounds better is just saying that because they bought it before the FANTOM came out.
Or maybe some people prefer the Montage sound? They definitely have different sounds and the Roland, vs Yamaha, vs Korg debate has been around forever. Just depends on what you like.
Yes, I just ordered a Montage after spending a week on TH-cam comparing the two just on sounds. I think I'd have been happy with either but it's the one I decided on.
Yamaha works way way better and smoother nicer in every aspect. if there is not some instrumens you like just sample it frlm another instrument and load it to montage and voil you have it. becouse Yamaha has Sampler 1.75GB.
Hahaha...nah. Search my channel for Korg, I've reviewed products from them before. If you'd like to send a Kronos over for me to checkout feel free LOL
Although you're comparing apples and pears, the sounds from Roland are more appealing to my ears. For the Montage, the blue blinking thing is irritating a lot... it's not a rhythm pattern, or voice controlled... looks like a big software error. Besides that, Yamaha is already 20 years a sample player, nothing more. Besides this, possibilities to create your own music with a DAW like Logic-X is only possible on the Roland. Therefore, my choice is easy. Roland wins. Next time find sound which are more alike.
They are both keyboard synths, pretty similar in my opinion, and 2 out of the 3 that have been compared for decades. The blue light didn't bother me hahaha, but I get it! As far as making music with a DAW, any piece of hardware can be used with a DAW, just the level of software integration is different. Roland chose Logic, Yamaha of course works with Cubase. Neither of which matter to me as I'm not a big DAW guy. I think both of these can be useful and really depends on what you aim to do. Thanks for watching!

The only thing lacking slightly is the FM which the montage excelled at but the Kurzweil isnt bad for FM just note quite as bright and clear.
do you have any accordian on fantom
I no longer have the Fantom, but I'm sure they have an accordion patch or two.
Can you plz do a drums comparison, like RnB and hip hop etc?
Not really a fan of the drums on either so not sure if I'll do that one.
So nice video.🆒
I wanna strings, guitar and bass sounds comparison.
Could you upload that video?
Thanks for watching! Definitely have strings on my list, I love using string sounds on keyboards like these.
@@SoundsAndGear I wait for your video
thx!
No I like Yamaha's saxophone sounds because I have them in Halion 6 but I am looking into also buying a hardware equivalent to Halion 6. I am seriously considering either a black
Tyros 4 or a Tyros 5 but when I pointed out that arranger keyboards can be used in midi production and that I have no intention of using the auto accompaniments in a reply someone
recommended maybe a Montage or a Fantom would be a better and more cost effective purchase. I prefer these saxophones compared to the Kontakt factory library which I think sound
even more fake and low budget.
I also think these sort of sounds are still usable on my Roland sound modules like my SC-88 Pro or my U-220, personally if I wanted a Fantom I would buy the module version even though
it's an older model. To be honest I have a lot more trust in hardware. I think Halion 6's alto sax is a maybe little smoother in comparison to Montage but Montage and even the
lower cost MX series uses the same Tenor sax samples that are in Halion 6.
Saxophones are going to sound synthetic no matter what you use but unfortunately as an amateur I don't have a budget to hire session musicians so I have to make the best of what I think is
the next best thing.
In black the Montage/MX looks unobtrusive and very reminiscent to the Yamaha SY
series, most of the AWM2 sounds in Montage are similar to Halion 6 plus Montage/MX also has a built in FM synthesizer similar to the DX7 so with Montage you also get a 4 or 6 op FM
synth in hardware in addition to mostly high quality AWM sounds.
@@LittleRichard1988 Cool!
Montage was generally more realistic. The Fantom sounds had way too much reverb and the vibrato was a bit artificial sounding. Both were Ok, but Montage was a step above for me.
Thanks for watching!
Fantom sequener vs Yamaha sequecer? plus Piano sounds and others...?
No contest imo, Fantom pattern sequencer is better. I may eventually do piano sounds but everyone does those lol. I wanted to share the sounds I like checking out. Thanks for watching!
@@SoundsAndGear GOt it. If choice is given fantom or montage. Which one you will keep it?
@@thomascook2535 Hmmm, if I want a dedicated workstation/sequencer it would be Fantom. But strictly for sounds and recording to something else (which is my workflow) probably Montage right now. I think Fantom needs a bit more in the acoustic range of sounds personally. But it's workflow is dope!
@@SoundsAndGear Yes.. Very right in acoustic range.... and the acoustic drums aren't good, but electronics drums sounds are fine from 808, 707 so on... Let's see what will drope this namm
@@thomascook2535 Yeah, looking forward to NAMM as well.
It has been my experience owning both that the Motif/Montage sounds are “radio ready” and the Fantom always required work.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@audiotone Yep, just depends on your taste, thanks for watching.
Always interesting to see the different opinions on something like this, thanks for the comment!
So what did you keep and what did you sell
I didn't keep or sell either, both are still here, on loan lol.
Look at which one is set up in front of his computer, and which one is off to the side. There's your answer. :)
The sax on the Roland would instantly sound realistically with less reverb
Thanks for watching
For woodwind sounds...non can beat yamaha ❤
Great sound comparisons, thanks.
Arrghhhh…. Roland vibartor on woodwind sounds too. :-/

@9:35 “Every manufacturer has their strengths and weaknesses.”
So for this video (5 🔈), I’m leaning more towards the Montage.
@@godiseternallife5822 uh....ok lol

Roland goes with same thinking way like Korg Kronos you must working on every sound to get dound you want. and if you playing live gigs you get problem if you play Roland or Korg dat sounds you have created is nog working as you have on mind. Yamaha plug and play and be happy.

Exactly 👏👏👏👏
That's why i really enjoy my Tyros 5 💪💪💪
I don't think you got those parameters tweak to the best on the montage
I didn't tweak anything, that's not the point of the video.
Fantom clear winner
Cool, thanks for watching!
For woodwind sounds i would just go for my fantastic ol" Yamaha EX5 which blows my montage 6 away because of its VL synthesis engine, sampling wouldn't do it for these type of sounds, physical modeling is needed!
such a classic board, man! I always wanted an EX5.
@@SoundsAndGear get the gospel musicians ex5 vst ;)
@@yeoldmedic7572 Yep, love his stuff, but still always wanted the actual board lol.
@@SoundsAndGear :P
The saxophone is the most difficult sample to replicate and if you play it on a piano you're not gonna get the true articulations as if you played it through a wind controller such as an AE 30-Pro
if you really wanna take it to the next level play Audio modeling's library where you could take the brass woodwinds and deliver unlimited articulations with the wind controller given you the dynamic buildup every arrangement of yesterday had. keyboards just just don't make it especially when it comes to internal sax sounds.
Huge fan of Audio Modeling SWAM, probably my favorite woodwind libraries to use.
@@SoundsAndGear There are times they do promotions for them
@@ALMAR-Music-Ltd. Yep
At 1:11, the lower register are not good on the Montage.

Majority of instruments sound more organic and realistic on Montage.

Do guitars when you get the chance, please. Nobody auditions all of the Fantom guitars. They just do acoustic for about 10 secs

“Aye I’m just playin’ man!” Im gonna use that line when I’m in the studio haha.
Ahahahaha LOL
"Roland Fantom" is noticeably better and more voluminous...
Cool, thanks for watching. Always interesting to see what sound others prefer. Definitely comes down to taste.
@@SoundsAndGear Could you tell me if both synthesizers were connected to the same audio systems? Otherwise, the results of the experiment were not entirely objective.
@@STANISLAV1609 Yes, both going into the same interface
Mod wheel on the Fantom isn’t where it should be.
Which will explain all the vibrato on the Fantom. Gives the sound more movement. Leaving the Montage sounding stale, whereas the Montage needed some mod wheel action on those wind instruments too. Respect though
@@2ammusik cool, thanks for watching
The montage still sounds like a motif. 🤔
Yeah for sure, they def have a certain character
Motif still can rival many synth specially the mid range
Very nice 👍🏼 joe peace

Hey Man (!) read what i´m telling you: very great doing - awesome - you have a very good & clear sounding. Please do that with a lot of sounds also other style, synth, basses, guitar, pianos, strings, etc.. I will check your Channel in future. No Problem how you playing - it is going to that notes of Sound - and you make it very well, thanks for that.
Greetings by Fantom of Silence
Thanks for watching! I plan to compare some of the other sounds. Would love to get a Kronos, Kurzweil, and Nord into the mix somehow as well. We'll see!
@@SoundsAndGear cool, well see ya...
I didn't see a new KRONOS at NAMM. I was bummed out.

Wow. They both sound amazing. At this level it’s hard to choose one or the other.

Clearly you have a good ear. :)
Wow! Your standards are quite high my friend. I the drum sounds on my MOXF, so I am thinking I may like them on the Montage. I have only tried the Montage in the music store. At the end of the day you have to get the tools that speak to you. What ever instrument you choose, just make amazing music.
Dang...that Montage just looks so OLD...Fantom blows the Montage away in sound quality
LOL thanks for watching
@@SoundsAndGear Im trying to choose between the Fantom 8 and Montage 8 i want the best sounding piano samples.
@@paulallenMacca best is a very subjective term, depends on the type of piano sound you like. Some like Yamaha, some like Roland. Overall I prefer Yamaha personally for those types of sounds.
Yamaha EX5! ;)
cool
I like how you appreciate being inspired by the acoustic instruments without being so rigid about sounding exactly like them in every way. People should respect every tool for its own capabilities even when being used to pay homage to other instruments. It’s the same with pro musicians. We have our favorites the way pay respects to but we have our own sound.
Yeah, I of course know that a real woodwind will always sound better, but I still like these types of sounds and personally use them often.
Fantom best
Thanks for watching
Thanks for the comment
Yamaha > Roland at acoustic mimincs, even at strings.
Most of acoustic mimics of Roland sound electic organ.
Thanks for watching.
Bruh. Do u have something against Korg? 🤷🏽♂️
Still the ASR-10 kills them.

I don't have a breath controller so I'm not sure
