Every journalist is responsible for their own safety and report only to their employer. They must thus identify themselves individually as per the media house they work for. A camera and a tripod is not a clearance for journalism. These guys are wrong and should apologize to larry who was just doing his job professionally.

Professional Journalists are trained on protocols to handle and protestors in a riot with. Such that they don't stand on their way or line of fire. The police also have been trained to account for Journalists so the first thing they'll ask is your Journalist badge. Which indicates your details your company and Journalist Guild number.
Journalists must be well known and should be in full uniform from where he is working,
Even company truck/lorry drivers are given specific instructions not to carry passengers! Larry is under a stringent contract with specific conditions for working in dangerous environments.

If it was me, I would have told the police same thing, the guys are not part of my team. But I wouldn't have just watched them being beaten without defending.
Secondly when the guys approached after the beating feeling betrayed, I would have stopped and tried to make them understand it wasn't a betrayal but not throwing hands and walking away.
