Hello from Northern Ontario. I’m enjoying an early morning coffee and watching your pike video. My parents lived for a short time in England. They left and moved to a small town called Wawa. Pike was king in the area and we grew up fishing and eating pike. I don’t think you can beat a good sized bobber/ float to fish for pike. The bite is quickly signaled by the float and doesn’t seem to bother the pike. There is also much less hardware attached to the line. A wire leader with a single or treble hook and a float. Also less you have to carry to your spots. One year an American angler graciously showed me the proper way to fillet and debone a pike in just a few steps after I was butchering it with the idiotic 5 cut technique. It was fast easy and left the fillet boneless! Our family enjoyed fresh fried pike suppers and it was staple for us in those days. Pike are very cooperative unlike many other fish. I still to day at 69 fish for pike with a red and white bobber! Great show. Oh and I make my own leaders using nylon coated steel wire that I twist and melt so there is less hardware the pike can see. I add a single hook using a uni knot that allows me to slide the hook up and down the wire leader to adjust for different size bait. It works awesome! Once again an American pike angler showed me the technique. Here’s a video we made showing how to make the leader. instagram.com/reel/C3-brCSL-lv/?igsh=dXd1ejNhZHR6MDc=
In the Uk we mostly don't eat pike just catch and release, we've not eaten course fish for years. I know you yanks eat pike and perch i've tried both and the are really good eating. Zander is the best.
@@joaquimioakim229 Heathens😄. I reckon perch would be good, not that I'd kill one. In Poland a supermarket I went in had more freshwater than sea fish on the slab.
@@joaquimioakim229 Zander are stunning to eat. Roach are like cotton wool with bones. Perch are delicious too, most predators are tasty. I've tried carp but its earthy. Traditionally we used to eat a lot of carp in the UK. Most people here, anglers in particular turn their noses up at eating coarse fish. They'd rather eat a chicken raised in a factory coated in chemicals and fried. Us brits now prefer to catch a fish, snog it, take a pic,and chuck it back.
This absolute gold mate! Chris, you're a beast my man 😁 40 years of assumptions, discussions and bro science about weight for deadbaiting, the big goldfish question -they might be better underneath a little bubble float as 3-5" live baits, apparently 🤷🏻♂️😬, but the visual data you provide for bite indication is the biggest thing for me. Pick your rod out the rests at the slightest indication folks. No, not every indication will result in a fish on the bank, but it will elimate most deep hooking and will ultimately put more fish on the bank. Share this with your pike fishing mates ffs, they'll thank you for it!
Hi Chris, great inspiration for a newbie like me, fishing for 60 years now and I want to get in to predator fishing, pike, perch etc watching your videos and I think they are amazing, great and motivational. They should give you a shot on TV, it will be a hit for fisherman of all abilities. Cheers.
Been a carp angler since a kid the whole scene has change so much I hate it. I started lure fishing going wiv minimum stuff it’s refreshed me I thought I’d given up on fishing for last few years but now I can’t wait. Love watching you it’s inspiring. Obviously I want more lure fishing lol and a big perch that’s wat I’m aiming for now
Just wondering if the 'grabbing and letting go' is to trigger a reaction, or that it's actually tasting similar to the gasping they sometimes do close the bait. Could they be deterred by the 'taste' of the tackle or our handling of the bait?
Another great video Chris , a real insight into how these pike take a bait , I must say I'm not convinced with these bite indicators when ledgering, float ledgering for me is the best way IMO . Keep the content going !
@@tonysansomif you use a heavy lead.. 4oz at least. Very tight line. Heavy drop off and a delkim. With the rod pointed directly at the bait. The drop off will drop the second the pike touches a bait..
Most fascinating pike behaviour filming I think given the nature of this species and the way they are fished for we need this very good footage. That first pike was indeed the same as the fish that took the roach. Same split in tail. ...
Love your videos and sheer enthusiasm for all types of fishing. A couple of comments on the set-up in terms of bite indication. Ideally the drop off should be set up directly under the reel spool so that the tension is such that even a short pull on the line will see the indicator drop off or drop back if the lead comes towards the rod. The swaying on the indicator that is seen in the footage is due to the position of the drop off clip on the bank stick, you might have put it where you did as the clip was too big for the extending part of the bankstick, and I would generally be on the rod instantly to stop a deep hooked fish if I saw this movement. Strangely enough you only generally see this when using braid as the stretch in mono means that this is not seen and can result in a deep hooked fish. In terms of the lead size I tend to think that heavier is better as the line can pull through the run ring without the lead moving and adding resistance, assuming that the drop off releases easily and quickly. However, in terms of pike being sensitive to resistance I have found in my experience that they will quite happily drag a big lead, it's a resistance change that is likely to make them drop the bait. When I say a resistance change I mean something like the drop off not releasing, the line snagging or fishing with a close bail arm etc. Keep up the great work.
Great video as always mate. Can't tell you how much I appreciate the time and effort that goes into filming underwater. My biggest takeaway from this video is the important is using ledger stems with a heavy lead. Getting that solid hold in the bottom with a big lead and the line popped up with a 360 swivel ring with a ledger stem to keep it away from snags and allowing for completely line freedom.
Hello The Ginger Fisherman, I have been watching your lovely and outstanding videos for quite some time. I have caught hundreds of pike but never through the method you utilize, and I am really interested in giving it a go if not completely switching over. If you would be so kind to do a tutorial of the method utilized in this video I would really appreciate it. I'm sure it is simpler than I am making it out to be. Thanks.
thanks to your vides ive got my MOJO back for pike fishing, was out at my local canal yesterday (17/3/24) and caught my 1st pike in about 10 years ( it was only 2lb) so thank you
You want to get that drop off right under the spool on the reel probably why the alrams just giving touch beeps my old dragoncarp alarms are better than that thing and dont use less than 2oz want that line anchored.
Awesome video. The footage was incredible. It's great that you explained your setup. Looking forward to seeing future videos using the underwater camera.
Another belter laddie. Subbed and binge watching all your videos now as inspiration for my edits. Thank you. Also love the underwater ones, so sick to see. 💪
New to pike fishing, so a lot to learn, why do you have your drop back indicator coming from the rear bank stick, and not from the front like carp bobbins ?
Very interesting setup for the bait alarm, something not used over here in the US very often. How about an in depth video on how that all works? Have you ever tried larger "circle of octopus hooks" ?
I just got given a spool of 20lb nylon line that's 500meters and 0.148mm , I was just wondering what is it used for because it would literally take miles to fill a spool so is it like load up mainly normal mono and then add a load for fishing for course species or is it more as just a fine leader??? I've never used it and I couldn't really find out much about micro fine super strong line.
I live in New Jersey in the United States and we have a river called Passaic river we stocked close to 50,000 pike over a five-year period and they thrived they cleaned up the ecosystem cleaned up the fish that eat the eggs and baby fish of your sport fish like bass etc. now we have huge pike perch Croppie bass, smallmouth, largemouth, rock, bass, and pike and pickerel Island in a 42 inch or was my biggest so far I have a river to wear when I was a kid. 15:37 What's the takeaway for this analysis? Maybe there is a commercial opportunity for a new bite alarm indicator? Chris nice filming. Having done a lot of sea fishing, I have often wondered if a light breakaway grapnel could be used in conjunction with a running ledger, to set the hook. When I went Piking I used Sprats for dead bait, and sometimes Rapella Plugs.
Very interesting. I’ve mostly done much simpler techniques for smaller fish. Mostly trout in the mountains of Utah. I enjoyed seeing the baits and rigs you used to catch those big pike. 👍
Chris, do you think that you could run through exactly how to set up the alarm and indicator? Eg bale arm on/off, how much drag, what to do with baitrunner reel..dont do much Pike fishing anymore as Im scared of deep hooked fish. Would love to start but hate the thought of hurting/injuring a Pike. Have watched previous videos of unhooking deep-hooked fish so seem confident with that, but would like to avoid it as much as possible . Cheers Chris 👍
Love your confidence to just keep getting takes on camera one after the other and not worrying about a hook up as another will be along in a bit. If that was my video it would be very short and there would be no fish 😆
Interesting, I have always thought you get one of two things, alarm stays silent until the fish moves and by the time this happens, the fish has spat the bait out having had a minute to play with it, which seems to be the standard when I have deadbaited. Or you get the instant smash and grab and everything works well.
Great vid as always. I live in Ireland and Trout season has started. I don't know when it starts in England but whenever it does you should try using a light setup and trotting a worm. Really fun way of catching them and also effective. You can catch all types of size with that method.

Loving the underwater footage!!!! One thing I’d love to see underwater footage of is a freelined bait with drop off indicator. Direct contact with the bait rather than a pivot point of a lead???? I think it might show some surprising results????!
@@r0binho386 good point….. depends on the weight of the fish and drop off indicator…. Decent sized bait and light ish indicator I use quite effectively…. If I go over 4oz bait I tend to use this method. Just wondering if you lose or gain anything in indication……
@@bobkeeble521 Interesting. It's never a method I've used and now I use exclusively circle hooks I prefer to use smaller baits so I suspect it will remain a method I've never tried
I would never free line a bait as you just can't tighten up properly for bite indication purposes. One thing that I have found effective, and as close to freelining as you can get, is to add 3 or 4 3SSG shot directly on the trace say 4 inches (10cm) behind the bait. This gives you enough weight to tighten up to for proper bite indication.
As predominately a sea angler i’m a bit surprised by 60lb braid - is it not overkill? Not a criticism - a genuine question. I use light ish braid for shore fishing, 20lb - 30lb and that would land anything I could catch in Suffolk inc rays and bass. Lure fishing in Ireland I might go to 40, but 60lb seems super heavy.
Heavy gear to get the hooks and trace back if you become snagged, light line risks a snapoff and hooks attached to bait left in water could end a pike*u

I aren't a pike fisherman at all but this video was very insightful and interesting to watch 👍
is that the goldfish from your previous video?
Is that one of the goldfish that you saved in your last video
Loving the underwater footage!!!!
One thing I’d love to see underwater footage of is a freelined bait with drop off indicator. Direct contact with the bait rather than a pivot point of a lead???? I think it might show some surprising results????!
With free-lining, is the weight of the fish sufficient enough to be able to use a drop-back bite indicator?
@@rak_fishing Thank you - that does make sense! I don't think braid was invented last time I went pike fishing.
