I think these reporters need to understand Chinese consumer psychology. As a Chinese person myself, I used to drive a BMW (it was my dad's) and have a few friends who are pretty into luxurious German cars. The main reason why people buy these cars are exactly because they are luxury - a show for status. Nowadays in China however, a X7 or even a G-Wagon will not necessarily signal status to people. If rich Chinese want to show off, they will buy the latest, coolest BYD or Zeeker. Sorry for my German friends, but these brands are not special anymore, so, unless you innovate and compete, you will be forgotten soon.
But can you explain why? Besides the nationalistic aspect because most in Europe especially old people aka the people with money imo still care about the brand even if there’s better cars out there, same reasons people buy iPhones despite Samsung and Xiaomi been more popular and same is happening with western fashion brands.

And for my latest ride in 2024, I went with an AITO M7-an all-new SUV with smart driving tech and deep R&D from Huawei. Am I just getting patriotic now? Nah, it's all about safety, reliability, brand quality, comfort, and smart features. Back in the day, Chinese cars didn't quite hit the mark for me on these fronts, but now they totally do. I got a setup that's on par with, if not better than, a Mercedes-Benz GLE for half the price of my Q7. Top-notch interior quality and L2+ smart driving features included. Nobody makes dumb buying decisions just because they love their country, and you won't find Germans overpaying for inferior German cars out of patriotism either. However, the game has changed, and Germany is no longer at the forefront of electric mobility, as China is. Not only in technology but also in the speed at which Chinese management makes decisions, a fundamental differentiator.

The customers are clever and they don’t part with their money with no good products. Wake up to the fact.
The explanation that Chinese buyers don't buy foreign makes is utter and total BS. The fact that Tesla is selling well in China contradicts what the director lady is saying. German BEVs are still in their infancy and first generations. Tesla has had a 20+ year head start and it's very hard to catch up, let alone surpass them. The German legacy auto makers and their automotive industry are done. Complacency led to their downfall.

The main issue for all European manufecturers are the batteries and their quality, density and pricing. This is the main price difference, not the subsidies. China is almost monoloy in the area of bateries.
If the German software quality is so good, as the interviewee states, then why is VW now putting Chinese software in its Chinese market ID3's, which out of interest was only about €15,000 in China. Also they sold the Mk1 Santana for almost 40 years in China, perhaps you could ask her how this helped build their brand with the Chinese consumer.
I’ve been checking out some of the latest Chinese EVs, like the Li Auto L9, the GAC M8, and the Zeekr 009, and I’m blown away by how far they’ve come. These models aren't just keeping up with global competitors-they're setting new benchmarks in design, tech, and innovation. As someone living in the United States, it's clear to me that Chinese automakers are rapidly advancing and could very well dominate the global EV market in the near future. The L9, with its luxurious interior and smart tech, feels like a rolling luxury suite. The GAC M8 is redefining what premium MPVs can offer, while the Zeekr 009's futuristic design and impressive range showcase how Chinese EVs are pushing the boundaries of what's possible. What’s even more impressive is how these brands manage to deliver cutting-edge features at prices that are often more competitive than Western counterparts. It’s not hard to see why they’re gaining traction not just in China but globally. At this rate, it won’t be long before we see more of these vehicles on American roads, challenging the dominance of Tesla, Rivian, and other established players. What do you all think? Are we witnessing the rise of the next global automotive giants?
Sorry to bring this up but the Mercedes benz model had too much of a high price tag and so little to deliver, one must be mentally damaged to buy one German and Japanese electric vehicle as of this day. Korean, Tesla and some Chinese has better range and better ways to recharge the vehicles, and the design is better. German cars really cheap out on the product and they think the brand will carry their sales.
China should look at the two World Wars to understand the real culture of Europeans. They are doing themselves harm. The tariffs harm their own industry. The many untrue things told in this video is not worthy of my response.

It seems she has no clue, in particular stating “on technology, the Germans, are already on par”. And she pretends to be an automotive expert for China, while most young Chinese reject buying German cars because they lack modern digital technologies and are seen as cars for elderly.
The Chinese Government encourages the buying of EVs which is what experts say we should pivot to. European EVs are no match for Chinese makes. And then there is a huge price difference. So why should the Chinese consumer pay more for a European make when a Chinese make is as good.
The interviewee's attitude sums up what is wrong with the German car industry and if they keep heading in this direction we will see more than a few Nokia's. The lady interviewing is more knowledgeable than this so call expert, I expect more from DW.
China first mentality is good for the people in China. It's amazing how the west gets uncomfortable when historically pro western markets switch to supporting their own. I'm for it. We are seeing the same thing in South Africa. There are a lot more Chinese vehicles on our roads with great value for consumers. Compete or be eaten.
USA auto makers also believe that their Mustang, RAM, Chevy, Ford, are chart popping materials. They are so hot that US government needs to step in to protect them from going bust, hence the tariffs. As for the female expert, she still believes in the "golden eras of German auto industry". I wish her sweet dreams.
Nah. Made in Germany quality with German prices. Their evs are an absolute disaster. Like that recent mega fire caused by a Mercedes ev in a basement in SKorea that destroyed 140 cars parked there. SKoreans are now hesitant to transit to ev. Evs have been around here for 2 years now. I have seen two fires so far and both involved German brands. A Mercedes EQS and BMW i8. Both top luxury cars.
Isn't the problem the obligation for 100% electric cars in 10 years that is oligating the car makers to increase their prices to have money to R&D and turning it overpriced? Should they not have subsides as well? They never say China has literally 1 billion people to help the R&D.
this expert dosent know much about vehicle technologies. huge differiator is german vehicle's UX can't catch up with new generation of customers needs in China
This woman doesn't know what she's talking about. German carmakers are struggling in China because they don't make what the Chinese want. The Chinese want EVs and MB and BMW have inferior products compared to the Chinese companies. Clearly she doesn't want to say that about German carmakers. But to say the economy in China is bad doesn't explain why BMW sales are down and Tesla sales are way up
But it was fair for them to exploit the Chinese cheap labour and the Chinese vast market for more than 30 years. Now because they are unable to compete with the Chinese that it becomes suddenly unfair.
Rationalisation is never an answer to any competition. Germany has been master in auto industry and must take steps to take back its seat by improving quality and reasonable pricing for a better competition in market.
“Mercedes and BMW have always been on digital side”. Yes in their own mind. I have driven both brands, and currently having BMW. Generally speaking both are way behind in the SW skills, and UI skills. There is also lack of feedback system from the normal users (probably arrogance; “we know better” attitude of German auto industry). Merc and BMW have still long way to get acceptable level in ‘digitalization’ of driving experience… and making basic digital features subscription based is not a solution but it just hands drivers back to Apple and Google (who are masters of digitalization and user experience).
It is disappointing to see a German auto industry expert blaming the Chinese government for the declining sales of German cars in China. As someone who has owned several German cars, I am shocked by the arrogance and ignorance displayed by this expert. German automakers are struggling in China due to their lag in electric vehicle (EV) technology and smart features, falling behind domestic brands like BYD. In 2024, from January to September, China produced and sold over 21 million vehicles, with domestic EVs surging. In September, only two gas-powered German models made the top 10, while Tesla Model Y and four BYD models dominated. The rise of innovative, affordable Chinese cars highlights the challenges German brands now face in this market. German auto industry really needs some other politicians, experts or engineers to do the real work on the ground!
People might like to know that VW were selling the ID3 in China for €15,000, so I'd assume they have also benefitted if indeed there are any subsidies.

All Mercedes (EVs and ICE) are poor quality now.

USA auto makers also believe that their Mustang, RAM, Chevy, Ford, are chart popping materials. They are so hot that US government needs to step in to protect them from going bust, hence the tariffs.
