  • Welcome to this weeks catch up video in the flower garden and greenhouse. I have filmed a bit over the last few weeks of October and the start of November to show you those last few flowers, end of season jobs, greenhouse seedlings and the start of bulb planting.
    Do you feel a bit like me? There never seem to be enough hours in the day for the number of jobs that need done in the flower patches and greenhouse. I think autumn may just be the busiest time for a flower farmer. I am excited about the changes I am making in the garden and the way I run Cloudberry Flowers. A change away from weddings to growing more for florists and local customers in 2023 is going to be exciting and I am even thinking of running a few beginner workshops too.
    In the greenhouse I needed a bit more space for my trays of seedlings so I bought a few new easy to build staging racks which have really helped make a difference and get those trays up off the floor!

    A beautiful bouquet Catherine. I’m still waiting for a fine, dry day to get my tulip bulbs planted. Like you I’m also trying to organise my flower beds better outside.

      Hi Sally, thanks for watching. Yes the weather is very mixed at the moment for bulb planting! We have had a few very windy days and another tree sadly down in the garden but I think it has calmed a bit now and hopefully less rain soon so can finish the bulbs and get the dahlias up. Has your weather been very mixed too? What have you found you need to change with your beds to help make them work better for you? I realised that I am being crazy running from one bit of the garden to another to cut the same variety of flower! Definitely time to try and get things growing in similar areas. Have a nice weekend x

      Thanks Jeanne, it definitely has exploded and I couldn’t walk anywhere in it a few weeks ago. I was tiptoeing over trays of seedlings 😂 So glad I managed to get some more staging as that has made all the difference and now I feel a bit more organised! Have a lovely weekend.

    Thank you Catherine for another interesting, and inspiring video. I will miss seeing your garden in full glorious bloom however I look forward to seeing your beautiful garden blanketed in sparkling snow and ice, especially since we do not have snow in winter here in Qld. Australia. I enjoy all of your lovely seasonal videos. 🌺🌱🌻

      Thank you Julia. You will just be getting going with growing now. I always love to hear about everyone in Australia at this time of year and what they are growing while we are going through winter. I wonder how much snow we will have this year. Last year we got very little but when we were in lockdown with COVID we had so much snow which was wonderful for the girls being able to sledge and have fun in it.

      Hi Alison, thank you, it’s always a bit sad when the last flowers are getting made up but by the end of a busy flower season you look forward to a rest once the bulbs are in! I love finding out and seeing pictures of what people are growing with in Australia just now. Its very cheerful when we are going through winter! Enjoy the start of your growing season 🌱 x

    Thank you for your informative videos. I will be attempting to grow Larkspur in late winter under grow lights (after I have stored the seeds in the fridge). Watching your videos encourages me to try new flowers in my pollinator gardens (Alberta, Canada, zone 3b).

      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Linda, thank you for watching 😊 I hope you have some good success growing the larkspur later in the winter. They are beautiful flowers if a little tricky to germinate! But storing the seeds in the fridge for a couple of weeks definitely helps. What are your winters like in Alberta? Is it too cold to overwinter any hardy annuals sown in the autumn? X

    Hi Catherine
    I live in the North East of Ireland 🇮🇪 so I think our growing conditions are fairly similar. I only started gardening during Covid and am loving it so much. Believe it or not, I still have sweetpeas flowering and its 12 November. Love your channel

      Hello Sara, thanks so much for watching 😊 I think we will have really similar growing conditions. What has your weather been like recently? Ours has been so mixed with gales, lots of rain and just the odd dry spell. I can’t believe you still have sweet peas flowering! It has been quite mild so far though hasn’t it. That’s great you have really enjoyed gardening. It was one of the things we could really enjoy during COVID lockdowns. What have you most enjoyed growing? Have a lovely weekend x

      The weather has been mild for November (up to 16 degrees) with plenty of wind 🍃. Yes the flowers are still blooming - even Snapdragons.

      Thanks for watching Susan. Yes I will definitely be kept busy for a while! Not enough hours in the day at the moment but steadily getting all the jobs done! Cerinthe is lovely. I haven’t overwintered it before so I am interested to see if it gets through the winter. You can grow so many flowers in raised bed and pots. It’s amazing what you can grow. I love making bulb lasagnes for pots as they just keep on flowering for weeks on end in the spring x

    I noticed from other ranunculus growers that saved the corms, they could separate new corms that grew and multiplied. I love seeing everything in your greenhouse. I’m getting anxious to plant some seeds and start growing, but it’s too early here in zone 5b, 2 degrees and snowing.

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s snowing here again too. I always get itchy feet to start sowing again as soon as Christmas is past but try to hold of as long as possible until the light levels improve a bit. That is a benefit of saving the ranunculus corms that you can get multiple new ones from old ones that had grown well. I love finding ones like this when they do grow large. I hope you have had a lovely Christmas.

    Hi Catherine, love your videos, just wanted a bit of advice if you don't mind. You mention you may be planting some of your seedlings outside. I live in the UK northwest so very wet and rainy and I just know if I plant any of mine outside they would be gone within days with the slugs and snails can you let me know how you try to control this and protect your young plants, please?

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Melody, thanks so much for watching and I am really glad you are enjoying the videos. It sounds like very similar conditions you have to me. Very wet and rainy and a lot of slugs and snails. At this time of year I take the risk of putting just a few annuals outside that are fairly large since they have been growing since August and leave them to fend for themselves over the winter with no added protection from slugs and snails. It is a bonus if I get those through. What I have learned is that the best thing for me to do to get them through the winter weather and protect them from slugs and snails is to overwinter the majority of my plants in the greenhouse. If I do this they are much bigger and stronger for planting out in March are more able to withstand the slugs. I find I lose most seedlings outside to slugs if the are small at planting out stage. In spring I will go round in the evenings with the torch and get as many slugs as I can early in the season and if I do that consistently I think it helps limit their numbers then. I have tried various other things for slugs but the most successful for me has been beer traps!

      @@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm Thank you so much for your reply. I will keep them in my greenhouse over winter. It is my first year growing flowers so mine are not as big and healthy looking as yours but I have planted some of the same types as you so will follow your lead in your videos and plant out when you do in March. Take care x

    The flowers in your bouquet are beautiful. What is the big pink chrysanthemum you grew, and is it an annual?

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much. The chrysanthemums I grow are annuals taken as cuttings from the mother plant stored over the winter and then brought back into growth in the spring. The exact variety of the pink chrysanthemum in the bouquet I am unsure of due to my very poor labelling! They are all early flowering varieties though as my season usually finishes too early to make the most of the late flowering varieties x

    Do you generally only get a couple of years out of ranunculus corms? Mine were disappointing last year but I pre-sprouted them again for this year and had good results. Sadly then didn’t store them properly and they have rotted now :( But maybe I’m better buying fresh ones anyway if they are 2+ years old now?

    • @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm
      @cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for watching 😊 Ranunculus corms can keep producing flowers for years if you can lift and store them in conditions that they like. Cool dry storage is the key as if they get damp they will rot which is maybe what happened to yours. If you keep them in the ground instead of lifting them then depending on your soil conditions again they could rot or get eaten by animals. The chances of getting all your corms through storage is small so I always buy a few new in each year. All the ones in my video were from stored corms though so it is possible to have good results from dry storage. When I presprouted them out of storage I had got about 90% through and only lost a few. I would say try to lift, dry and store your corms if you can each year but buy in some new ones as a top up for any you lose. I will buy in in the new year when I can see how many I have got through the winter by that stage.

      @@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm Yes, it was my own silly fault for not storing them properly sooner. Have decided to forego ranuncs next year and going to give anemones a try for the first time instead :) Ordered a selection of corms yesterday. Would you recommend pre-sprouting these now and overwintering in the greenhouse or waiting until early spring to start them off? (I am in Glasgow). Love your channel - thanks so much 👍🏼
