What a coincidence that you upload this hours after my initial contemplation of getting the Pixco speed booster. Thank you so much for the corner and center comparisons, as well as the image comparisons with the non-speed boosted counterpart, as I adapt using the "dumb" adapters as well. Since I personally don't mind the softer look, as I'm not making big prints, I'm excited to say I will purchase the booster!
A very nice review, I use a Sony A to E mount Pixco booster with a M42 adapter to mount my vintage glass. I'm more than happy with it for the current £49 price tag I do find however that when mounting a M42 lens, I have to loosen it off a couple of turns on the adapter plate first otherwise it fails to lock to the Pixco, screw it down fully when it locks. Fitting a standard A mount lens is no problemn although the lockopen switch confused me at first until I realised it actually controls the aperture on non manual lenses. Pixco advise that there is a tendency for a blueish flare if shooting in very bright light which I can confirm.
Man, do I have a bad taste? I actually like the images with a focal reducer better than original ones! :) I am considering getting one for use with manual lenses and I really liked its effect at full apertures and that's what I am going to use it for exclusively.
I just bought used one for my m43 camera because i have MD 35-70 and it is bit long for daily use. Anyway your resulta look promising, not bad at all. Thanks for a review.
Nice review, David. I use my XT-3 with soviet vintage lenses Jupiter 37a and Jupiter 21M and even with a dummy adapter M42-FX it gives really nice look. But after your video I want to check how they work with a speedbooster. Thank you)
I have Pixco's FD to M4/3 and it works wonderfully, and delivers a clean image. I didn't notice the addition of much softness in the corners from the booster. And the reduced image size tightens the image up all over, anyway.
Thank you for the great video, could it be possible that the softer corners aren't due to the Speedbooster but more likely because of vintage lenses - as amazing as they are - usually being horrendously soft in the corners, especially wide open?
I like vintage lenses. Some of them are even better optically than modern Fuji primes like 23mm f/2, or 50mm f/2. Of course they don't have AF, but that is expected. For example, check this one: Nikkor 50mm 1.8 AIS (nicknamed "pancake"). I bought it on ebay in mint condition for $200. Great glass! Speedboosters I don't like, I think they change the optical formula of the lens.
I agree vintage lenses can be optically better and impart a more filmic look and true speedboosters can change their characteristics but they do give you some more focal length options

@@andreitelenkov5775 you’re missing the point that these allow you to use *almost* the entire lens to the FF value instead of using just the centre. You will get the full character of the lens ie. compression instead of the mimicked field of view. A 35mm on Fujifilm is NOT identical as a 50mm on FF. if you use a 50mm on Fuji with a focal reducer you get the identical 50mm with the edges only slightly cut, but maintain the characteristics. You say you love your pancake lens, but you aren’t taking full advantage of it because ‘you don’t like focal reducers’.

Great review. I’m thinking of purchasing this for my Helios lens. Shame they don’t appear to be able to do them for m39 lenses like the Jupiter 8.

Possibly but they appear sharp when I use them on my Minolta film cameras.

You "THINK" they change the optical formula? Heck, that is exactly what they are DESIGNED to do. That's why you see a wider view.

Why does the images with no speed booster look wash out?
The only thing I am seeing is a slightly greater contrast in the speed booster shots and a difference in depth of field.

Thank you for your comment the M42-MD adapter works fine with the speed booster no vignetting and focuses same as without the speed booster.
