      @@michaelszczoczarz5776 Thank you! So if you use Open Grade base like I have here, You can't use sand for bedding material because it will migrate into the clean stone base, causing the pavers to sink... That's why I use the 3/8" clean crushed stone for bedding material, that does not migrate into the base stone.
      Here is a video I made which explains the base prep method I use in a lot more detail 👉th-cam.com/video/ChaJe3JqD6I/w-d-xo.html

      Yea it does. I think the customers realized they just had to do it after they seen the patio area. Those pavers leading to the old concrete walkway just really took away from the look, I'm glad they pulled the trigger on extending it to the driveway! ✌

    Good video. I'm planning on laying some paving round a swimming pool. Usually I've seen people lay down plastic sheeting to prevent weeds from shooting through, then a layer of sand, then the bricks. First time I've seen the bricks laid on gravel .. but it would make a lot of sense round a swimming pool wrt water spillage etc.

  • @blazinmark1
    @blazinmark1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why did you use the gravel as a filler for the steps @24:10? I realized that you used a polyurethane adhesive for the bonding agent on the steps, but why the loose gravel???
    My Landscapers built 5 ft colums with the same blocks you guys are using for the steps. The did not use gravel, but used rebar and concrete with Sika polyurethane adhesive. Is there a reason you used loose gravel? Thanks

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  ปีที่แล้ว

      So there are many applications where laying block dry on clean stone is the best way to install. But some situations do call for them to be built on concrete pads. If I was building a 5' column, I would definitely build it on a rebar reinforced concrete pad. They did the right thing ✌

    I may have missed it but you don't have to tamp the stone? And nothing over top? Where we are, we have to tamp the 3/4" stone base layer and then add an inch or two on top, some use sand, I use screte. Then we level that off and tamp it. Then we lay the pavers. Some lay concrete first but I do not like doing it that way. They claim its faster and easier. We have never had to redo ours from sinking, but we have had to redo others' concrete base ones. We are in sandy loam along the coast but we do the same thing to the clay soil further inland.

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we tamped the base of the backfill stone. But with 3/4 clean stone, you only need to compact in 6 inch lifts with foot traffic only applications. I never lay pavers on poured concrete. Not good in my opinion. Concrete cracks and shifts, then you can't do anything about it but rip it out and redo it. If pavers sink or shift when dry laid, you just lift them up and fix the area, then re lay the pavers. You can't do that with concrete under them. But yea. I do compact the stone, I have multiple videos on my channel on how I do my backfill method. Here is the video before this one, where we excavated and backfilled for this walkway 👉th-cam.com/video/CavqzFgb984/w-d-xo.html

    Typically how many square feet does one yard or ton of gravel cover?

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you are planning on 6 inches of gravel, here is how you do the math. 1 cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. so for 6 inches, which is half of 1 ft. So you would get about 54 sq ft per 1 cubic yard of stone. 54 sq ft x .5 (6 inches deep) = 27.
      to find the cubic ft you need, it is (length x width x depth divided by 27)
      so lets say a 10ft x 10ft patio. ( 10ft long x 10ft wide = 100 sq ft.) (100 sq ft x .5 (6 inches) = 50 cubic ft) (50 cubic ft divided by 27cubic ft (1 yard) = 1.85 cubic yards of stone need for a 10x10 patio.)
      Hopefully that makes sense ✌

    Awesome job!! I'm wanting to do a paver walkway at my house. I like this open grade base idea but I was wondering if you notice any rocking of the pavers when you walk on them compared to having a sand base underneath? Thanks!!

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you! I stopped using sand for the bedding material over 4 years ago when I switched to this open grade base method. I have actually found that the 3/8' clean crushed stone for bedding material holds the pavers more steady. Pavers are prone to sink and shift when laying them on sand because sand is very un stable. The crushed stone locks together and keeps the pavers very stable. But the most important part is that water can travel through it freely, causing less heaving during the freeze / thaw cycles. Sand holds onto moisture and expands during the winter months, causing heaving of the pavers.
      I have a video explaining this material more and how to screed it, here is a link to that video if you are interested 👉th-cam.com/video/Y5l7xLCZeyk/w-d-xo.html

    Hello sir thank you for all your videos
    Need some advice, I have an existing 15 year old paver driveway that needs the polymeric sand replaced due to some of it deteriorating. I’ve pressured washed and dug out the gaps as much as I could, any advice on next steps to have a beautiful finished product?

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem at all! So now that you have the joints cleaned up nice, it's just a matter of following the best practices of installing the new polymeric. I have a video that breaks down how I go about installing polymeric sand.
      Here is the link to that video right here👉th-cam.com/video/mmQIHU2b3qg/w-d-xo.html
      In that video I use a specialized compactor to settle the sand into the joints, but you can use a regular plate compactor with a rubber mat on it. If you go to home depot, they rent them for 1/2 days or full days. That would be recommendation if you do not have access to one. Good luck!

    I think I’ve found the answer to a previous question (different video). @23:30 It looks like you use the hammer to set them, rather than the compactor after before the sand process for the joints.
    If we have an intended joint between the pavers, when setting them how do you maintain the joint space (tile spacers)?

    • @TheChristianHardscaper
      @TheChristianHardscaper  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Correct, we set the pavers into place and level them with our hammers. We also compact the pavers during the polymeric sanding stage as well. As far as joints, most pavers come with bump outs around the edge of them to create the joints automatically. But if you have pavers without them, yes, you would use a tile space or something comparable.
