Thank you so much for your generosity. I love your videos and your art and as a thank you for your generosity in sharing your ideas and expertise, I just purchased your Monoprinting booklet. You really are an inspiration and after being out of my studio for three months for various not so happy reasons, your technique is the very first thing I've attempted in order to revive my creative spirit.. Thank you again.
@@jennydowde9996 Thank you so much, it's always good to hear that people are enjoying the videos. I really hope that you find the booklet useful and I appreciate your support. I've taken a break for a few weeks due to some sad news so I know how difficult it can be to feel creative again. I'm working on new videos and I hope they can help others to gain a creative spark again and overcome those artistic blocks that often prevent the flow of ideas. Thank you.
Hi Dan. First, I think the adding of on-screen text, is a wonderful thing. It help one to avoid any pitfalls and offers pointers at various stages. I would like to see the captions as a permanent feature. I like hot colours, simply by changing the amount of red to yellow, produces a very harmonious look to the work.
Thanks for the feedback on the captions, still experimenting but I hope they are useful and will try them again, It helps to explain the colours used etc and I'm not sure that everyone reads the long video descriptions, I think brief captions work best and not throughout the whole video. I tried with this demo to show the use of 2 tones of the same colour. I will do this again with 3 tones.
@@DanTirels You're right about not everyone reading your video descriptions. The nice thing about the on screen captions, is that they are relevent to what is going on at the time. They don't get in the way of seeing the work either.
I like the final piece very much. It is complex and powerful. The first shapes were powerful as well, but you pushed and created that scratchy, textured, layered Dan Tirels look.
Got the electronic copy of the book Dan. That way I don’t have to carry it around and it is present on laptops and tablet and I already have far too many other books and publications to store. Loving what you do and the way you go about it and share it with us. Subscribed a while back. Keep up the great work..............and stay healthy
Thanks very much for buying the booklet I hope it provides some inspiration. I hope to work on a new book of projects soon that will be made available as an ebook as well as print copy. Should be ready for Christmas ! Glad you enjoy the videos.
The on-screen captions are really good, so we don't forget anything. But I like also the materials list. To have everything on the table before to start working helps. I like Dans abstract light hand drawing. I would like to learn that, but how?
Thanks for the feedback, I'm still experimenting with the captions, I don't want them to get in the way so try to use them when necessary. I may film a short intro for future videos that go through all materials used.
Love your work ! Amazing how you have developed your own technique (ordered your booklet - Australia....) Would love to show you a monotype print and get some feedback as to how it was printed.. but will wait till I receive your monoprinting booklet. COVID cancelled all our Fibrearts classes in Australia and thank goodness for people like you sharing your expertise I can learn a lot of it online...
Thank you for buying the booklet (already in the post and on the way to OZ) Please remember that you can always email photos of your work to be added to the online gallery featured on my website. I hope the booklet arrives soon and you find it useful. I always think creativity helps in difficult times, and we all need that right now.
Dan--thanks so much for sharing freely with us---you are so inspirational !!! When you use acrylics---do you use extenders to keep the paint from drying too quickly? If so, which paints & extender combinations have worked best for you?
I haven't worked with these yet, but I am thinking about filming a demo to explore this further. I have used a silkscreen printing medium that you can add to acrylic paint and this worked very well. (it was Daler Rowney silkscrreen medium)
Thanks, I did like how this worked out and the use of the radiator paint as a primer worked surprisingly well. About titles, that is a very interesting point and it is something that I have only recently begun to think about, I try not to give finished artworks titles such as Abstract No 3, or Untitled composition etc. I like very simple one word descriptive titles and definitely nothing too pretentious. I think the title for this would be something like "Radiation" It radiates a certain warmth because of the colours used and it is ref the primer used.
I use the radiator paint because the online order was taking too long to arrive and my local art shop has unfortunately now closed. Radiator paint was surprisingly good.
I normally use just a conventional paint primer or spray with a white acrylic. The mono-printing technique works best on a smooth surface so you need to prep the canvas before trying this method. The radiator paint was an excellent substitute.
@@DanTirels this radiator paint is it glossy at the end? I got a white acrylic spray, but this is verry glossy if ts dry. Would this spray works also as a primer?? 😊 thanks
Hi there loved your pdf I bought it. Hey where do you get the recycled plastic strips? Also for tissue paper I purchase the kind that you enclose with gifts at the dollar store but I think it might be thinner than what you use. Where do you get that because it looks like you really do apply it several times and it doesn't crumble...?
Thanks for buying the PDF version of the book I hope it is useful for you. The plastic you see me use is very thin and sometimes bin liners could be used. Although it may look like paper it is just plastic.
This art piece turned out very well. I like the addition of captions except the white is difficult to read, especially if the background has a light colors. I've seen other videos that use a bold gold or bold yellow and it's easier to read. I use my smartphone to watch your videos. The video showed your book. Is it back in print?
Thank you. I will always spray works on canvas with an acrylic varnish and framing finished artwork is something that I have made a video of recently, I like wide borders around work on paper so I would always frame smaller artworks in a large frame with a minimum of a 3" border, and use a bevel edge mount if possible. A good tip is to look for frames in charity shops.
Daily walks along the coast (with my rescue dog Buzz) The work of other artists, I think you can find inspiration from a variety of places, sometimes it's good to just start by making a few marks on paper to see what happens. Hi Daniel, I admire your work and style so much! Do you think that monoprinting is possible on a big canvas too? Why in your video you used the radetor paint? I am wating for the new edition of you book. Thanks. Giuseppina
Yes, absolutely, I hope to film a large canvas soon. The radiator paint was used as a substitute for primer which I was unable to buy from my local art shop (closed due to (COVID-19) online orders take too long.
Do you let the oil paint dry between layers? A little? Not at all? I love every single one of your paintings. Thank you for sharing your process, it's inspiring.
It is best to leave the paint to dry for a couple of hours, but because this process uses very thin layers of paint it isn't always necessary. Thanks for your positive comments.
Thank you dan from argentina. , this was very relaxing process in this hard hard times. just a question, I cannot draw lines, it is just a mess when I try! amazing all your work, I am just starting to learn from your videos.
This was an experiment with using alternatives to conventional art materials. I'd ran out of gesso and there is no local art supplier, online orders can also take a while. Radiator paint seemed to work OK.
@@DanTirels Ok I understand now, I am in the same boat, no art supply near by and I have to relay on fed-x or ups or usps for most art supplies, by the way I am having so much fun using this monoprinting technique, will post a few on your site under the other artist area. thanks for taking time to video your demo's!
The paint was an experiment as I had trouble getting hold of my usual primer. The radiator paint is a good substitute and I will try this again. It provides a nice smooth finish which is what you need for this technique.
I made this demo out of the frustration of not being able to get hold of my usual art supplies (online orders are too slow) I just looked in the local DIY or hardware store and though I'd experiment with this fast drying radiator paint. I used 4 coats and it works really well. leave to dry 5 minutes between coats, but check on the label first.
I believe radiator paint could be enamel based? Perhaps this offers some beneficial and interesting surface properties. It is probably non-yellowing but I'm not sure of its archival qualities.... but let's not worry about that!

I was just improvising as an experiment when all the usual materials were unavailable. Sometimes the hardware store is a great place to experiment with unconventional methods. The radiator paint worked fine and I would use this again in place of gesso.
I'm no expert, but... Students: DO learn mono-printing from Dan T. DO NOT learn spray painting from Dan T!!! Haha! No offense, I *adore* Dan's work, but geez Dan, you are holding the spray can way too close to the work to get an even coat, and you should use thinner coats. Lightly sand in-between coats for an even smoother finish. 💕
Thought that would be noticed ! I should explain that I was filming outside and it was a very windy day, the spray was going everywhere except on the canvas. I later re-sprayed this in a more sheltered location (too dark to film) The great thing about this paint is the fast drying time so it is possible to spray lots of thin coats, although sanding was not needed.
