Original toy it was just easier to make him that way. I hate it myself tho. I like the Combiner Wars version where the truck is just part of the transformation.

The original Diaclone toy was called “Powered Convoy” which was a redeco of “Battle Convoy”. Diaclone predates the Transformers cartoon.
