    Claire, This was great! I actually did a diploma in Floristry years ago for personal enjoyment and did a module on the Language of Flowers, it’s so fascinating.
    Strangely enough, most modern day commercially grown flowers apparently no longer smell like they used to. They’ve been grown to be visually pleasing, and also for longevity, at the expense of the smell (at least, that’s what we were taught). Makes me wonder if the plantations for perfume flowers - think Chanel and Dior have their own growing fields - have concentrated on cultivating the flowers for fragrance? So interesting! 🌺

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh wow! You should be doing this video 😍 yes I do think flowers grown for Dior and Chanel in Grasse will be specially selected for scent unlike with other flower growing.
      My mum used to do a lot of floristy and said a similar thing, i.e. that flower breeding and growing is all about looks now, not smell. She said some flowers have such big heads now that wire is essential to hold them up in arrangements.
      The lack of smell nowadays especially strikes me with carnations, they just don't smell clovey at all in supermarkets to me.
      Thanks for your super interesting comment Lucinda and thanks for watching ❤️

    In the Philippines, the country that I am from, the smell of jasmine (or at least jasmine sambac) is often associated with (Catholic) churches as the flower buds are made into garlands and are offered at the altars, so it is commonly thought of with words along the lines of "pure" or even "holy". It can also symbolize hospitality as it is given to visitors to the country as a gesture of welcome. It's so interesting to learn how in other cultures at certain time periods, jasmine could be associated with love that is sensual and provocative. Or maybe it's just the diverse range of the jasmine scent types available that explains the various ways jasmine is symbolized by different cultures.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes jasmine is a very diverse one, it's white and innocence but also seen as carnal and indolic. I think there is very much an East - West cultural split with it and that is absolutely fascinating! It seems like it a symbol for quite a few places, but there are none more associated with it than the Philippines, and it is loved the world over. Thanks for watching ❤️

    This video was just so fascinating/amazing; thank you Claire! 😍 Loved the small details and history in each stories behind these perfume notes! Thank you for the precise background infos & your hard work as well! ❤ It would be soooo lovely if You'd make a series with even more flower notes, I'd just love it! 🤩(F.e.: honeysuckle, freesia, lily, ylang-ylang, tiare, hyacinth, mimosa, orchid, peony, frangipani, heliotrope, lily-of the-valley, lotus, etc... I should stop now....😂) Just thanks a lot! 🙂

      Thanks! I might make a second video actually! I really enjoyed researching this but yes, there are lots more and ultimately I stayed off the yellow florals because in the main, the Victorians didn't smell those... but there will be some information from other cultures out there for sure, so I will have a look! Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching 😊

    I'm not a floral kinda gal, and I'm beginning to understand, as per this video, that there are reasons why:
    "Loyalty, devotion, serenity and grace" - it's no fricken wonder I have issues with lavender! Those are all qualities I covet but which are or have been elusive in my first fifty years in this mortal coil. *sigh
    I also can't do violet or iris AT ALL. I'm NONE of those things! Hmmm....
    Don't get me started on jasmine or tuberose!! Makes so much SCENTS

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe I should make another video with some more floral notes and see whether we can find you one that fits?! 🤣 Oh Julija you are so funny! I know you aren't the world's biggest florals fan and I love that. What did Chanel say? A woman shouldn't smell like a flower. See, you are in good company. ❤️ Thanks for watching 😘

    Were forget me nots ever used in perfumery? I know they have a very special meaning, as their name suggests obviously, but I never knew if they actually have a detectable scent. I think it got a lot of hate from Mugler fans when it came out, but actually it was undeserved. L'Oréal own Mugler now and people just have to accept it. I think that is difficult to be original with coconut because so many fragrances use white florals, vanilla and bergamot with it, it's just a very classic combination that works! 🥰
