The 2023 courascant guard gunship doesn’t even include ang pilots, they just force regular shock troopers to pilot it

I love the idea of being able to switch a leader/ main character vehicle, to a non specific standard style figure.

I never saw two pilots for one ship to be much of a problem. More options is a good thing for a toy. It's more annoying when Lego doesn't provide enough figures to fully crew a vehicle.

I always thought this was to represent rebels shortage of star fighters

pretty much all fighter planes and helicopters will have a rotation of pilots that fly them and different pilots will often be assigned planes at random depending on repairs, and the readiness of the personnel. it’d make a lot of sense for the rebels to have 3-5 guys assigned to one ship
I think it's just in case you want to display the main character outside the X-wing, and put in the extra pilot so that it doesn't look empty

Basically you get two pilots so one is always on duty while the other sleeps.
I thought it was so you could buy 2 X-Wings and have two different X-Wings rather them releasing an additional set(that doesn't have Luke) that barely anyone would buy, I think it's a great idea =)

Originally lego made several sets back in the day that were literally nothing more that 20 something minifigs and accessories for them. Sometimes it might include a small vehicle like a bike or something but yeah. Just a lot of people.

My brother, who is more technical and builds more vehicles and stuff made a Z-95 Headhunter styled ship out of random shit he found in our giant lego bins. It probably could be better but it looks close enough. Meanwhile i make the Mocs and terrain lol.

So even though I have a much newer set that only came with one pilot in the box
