How To Avoid Conflict | Kayak Fishing Etiquette

  • In this video, I am covering a topic that is probably long overdue. Kayak fishing is growing exponentially and therefore it is more important than ever that we practice good stewardship and courtesy to other anglers whether you are being courteous at the boat ramp or giving another angler the benefit of space while fishing in a tournament.

    This is spot on !!!!!! I have found the kayak guys are respectful…… it always seems to be the guy in the most expensive boat that has no respect for the guy in the kayak. It’s not all boat guys just some. It has always amazed me when one of these guys sees u catching fish they get on top of u and start casting towards you and ur kayak. Sure takes all the fun out of fishing for everyone.

    I am new to kayak fishing so thank you for the video on etiquette. I don't ever want to be "that guy" or in my case "that girl." I put an electric trolling motor on my kayak because, after two knee surgeries and elbow surgery, it was less painful and less stress. I have seen negative comments about kayak anglers having an advantage because they either peddle or have a motor. Not all of us are wanting an advantage, some of us may have injuries you cannot see and we just want to be on our kayaks. A boat is overkill for one person that loves to fish small lakes and ponds that only allow electric motors. There is something personal and intimate by being in a kayak, a better connection with the nature around us.

    Yeah sitting on the ramp is a killer . So many times I've gone by a local lake and seen a couple kayaker sitting on the ramp and boaters waiting. One lake in particular has a large grass area off the side where they could put the kayaks while setting up. I am now a kayaker and I think of that whenever I'm launching mine.

    Last weekend I saw a boy scout troop with about a dozen canoes on the only two ramps on that lake. I just parked and started unloading my kayak there and gearing up in the lot. But about half an hour later and ten boats waiting the troop leader finally showed up and started chewing ass to get the kids to move the canoes onto one ramp. Whole time I'm dragging my kayak to the beach just fifteen feet away. I felt bad for those boaters though.

    I agree with everything said. I can not stand the ramp monkeys. Never thought about the spot burners. My grandfather taught me to never crowd another fisherman or get in their way. I did have a drone harass me in Florida. If I would not have been battling a sand bar and a changing tide I would have caught it. I later found out in Fla. it is illegal to harass fishermen and hunters while engaged in sport

    Always enjoy your vids never disappointed thank you for the work and effort you put into your content. Some don't understand what spot burning is to them everything is considered spot burning. Like around here in Massachusetts someone will post a pic of a striper they caught at the Cape cod canal and don't blur it out . And a handful of people will say spot burning. The canal is a striper spot that everyone who targets striped bass knows about. Have a good day and stay safe Jimmy from Massachusetts

    You know what really grinds my gears... when you see a beautiful kayak rigged all up completely and it sits in a garage because they only going out when the weather is absolutely perfect. This public service is for all those kayaks that have been left outside, under tarps, and even forgotten about. Let's bring awareness to them and set them free on the water... WWJD. I love you.

    I started kayaking and kayak fishing last year. I fly fish and need a bit more room for casting. I love your 1/3 rule. I would take it a bit further and ask them how much room they need and then add a bit to it. Also I have found a number of fishers who leave their trash laying around as they don't go back to check where they pull out to see if they dropped anything.

    Here's a quick thing that bugs me, but I am not sure what to think about it. I fish a lot at my home lake, which is private. Many, many times I will be fishing a spot and people (other homeowners) let their dogs jump in the water or throw sticks and whatnot. Now, if they are there first I will always just pass over the spot. How should I feel if I am there first though ? Anyways, I must have missed this video but I still wanted to add me two cents. Thanks for the tips, Chad!

    I’ve been at busy boat ramps with boats being unloaded first thing in the morning. I don’t have a cart so dragging across a gravel/paved lot is something I try to avoid. If I’m just pulling in and there’s room, I’ll back my truck down as far left or right as possible and still leave room for trucks and trailers to come in and out, drop my kayak off to the side of the ramp or very edge and load it up. If there’s no room I’ll gear up and then back down and still drop it off to the edge of the ramp so guys can still get their trucks and trailers in.

    The ramp etiquette for sure which I apply to boaters as well don’t pull your boat down at the ramp and then start getting your stuff on it. Put your seats in graphs on and remove your straps and transom saver and such before you get on the ramp so that the guy who’s ready to go isn’t having to wait on you being that guy!

      @@ChadHooverFishing not a bad idea. really, people do need to chill out there most of the time. I agree with the obvious points you make, and you make them well. That being said, if you are inside a smaller body of water and people are fishing everywhere (or you fish a popular inlet on the weekend), no one tells me what to do. especially if the only reason they got there faster was because they paid a bit more for a trolling motor or some pedal yak. These 300 pound, bougeqoise boat owning wannabes weren't there with me and so many others paddling a tarpon 120 (or ocean kayak) that only had one angling feature. Those boats a decade ago had two flush mount holders and the rest was serious DIY power tool work...oh and yes, I obviously have been pretty involved in contentious yak community situations hahahahaha.

    Ever watch a bass Tourny launch? They are masters of efficiency. They don't get in line till ready. We can do the same thing to a point with a kayak cart. Load up in the lot. Pull onto the ramp and launch or putt the kayak to the side . Same goes for landing. Get in line and wait your turn. Have your cart ready.

    The best way to avoid conflict when putting your kayak in at the ramp is getting a landing gear or kayak cart of some kind. I have the Boone dox landing gear and it makes getting on the water 10 times easier. I get everything set up at my truck and just wheel it down to the water and off I go. 9/10 times I don’t have an issue with another kayak angler but I do run into a lot of smug bass boat guys. I fish a lot of smaller public lakes bec that is what I have where I live so it’s not uncommon to show up to the lake and there be 8-12 bass boats on a 50 acre lake lol. Just have to go with the flow.

    • @mre4875

      I was on a small lake and there was a choke point (narrow area). I needed to pass thru it to get back to my launch spot but a shore fisherman was casting. I kept back paddling so the current wouldn't push me into his casting area. After several casts I finally decided to "ask" if I could proceed. He was very rude and basically said sure, come on thru and scare away all the fish. I paddled as gently as possible and allowed the current to push me past him. I thanked him as I passed. Under my breath I was calling him everything but a man, but I hoped by being the more polite person maybe he would learn something. I should add that at this area of the lake there are more swimmers, kayaks, and paddle boards then there are fishermen. Am I wrong or was the guy being a "donkey"?

    • @307mtb
      @307mtb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mre4875 he was definitely being a donkey and sounds like you were being a gentleman about it. You were definitely the better fisherman

    So, I bought a pedal kayak last year because of the advantage they have over paddle kayaks in tournaments. So when I fly over to a spot before someone gets there cause I'm fast that makes me a bad kayak angler? I mean I dont think I've done it but I'm asking for the future. Ig I go several hundred yards in front of someone is that poor edict? I guess I have a short attention span, so usually when flipping docks I only do 10-20 and then just move on somewhere else.

    I have a quick question (rule of thumb). While I agree, a quick conversation would answer this on the water.
    While working a bank and you come up behind another kayak/boat either anchored, on a fish, photographing a fish and you “HOP” around them. How much space do you give before you stop fishing and start fishing on the other side. Typically I give about “casting” distance. Is this standard? Looking for opinions

    What would you say to the people that don't like the idea of electric motors on kayaks and the people that say it's an advantage if someone is using an electric motor or a pedal because you can pedal and fish but you can't paddle and fish.

    • @ChadHooverFishing
      @ChadHooverFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael Shatraw I would say to them that if they think it’s that big of an advantage then they should get one. They didn’t walk their kayak to the water, they used a motor to get it there. Pedals are a mechanical advantage over paddling so if you open that argument up where does it end? Lightweight sensitive rods are an advantage over fiberglass, carbon fiber paddles are an advantage over metal or fiberglass, side scan is an advantage over standard transducers, and on and on and on and on. I think the argument is moot if they are allowed for everyone. The definition of fair is that the same rules apply to everyone. It’s just not an argument that I really entertain anymore.

      A kayak is a boat, as is a canoe. One thing about launch ramps - they have throughout history been a place where you can see people do some insanely stupid things, and that is not limited to kayaks by any means. In fact it's usally boaters that cause problems both on the ramp and on the water.
      I would avoid the ramp anywhere it can be done. Who wants to wait for all the idiot drunk-ass boaters to finish not knowing how to backup, not knowing how to get it on the trailer, forgetting to put in the plug. Kayakers are not the main problem at launch ramps.

    The person who is very loud whether it be a radio, comes in way too fast and way too close making a bunch of noise. Kayaks are made to be stealthy and if I'm fishing I'm not throwing a party.
    As far as tips for kayak etiquette I would suggest reminding people to wear their PFDs. I see so many recreational kayakers and SUP users just wearing a bathing suit and nothing else. I usually casually suggest to wear a PFD just in case something happens. I'm usually not a jerk about it but I like to at least put the idea in their head that just maybe they should take more precaution.

    I can't stand bass boaters that think they own all the water they come to same cove as you and think you should leave. I had on more than one occasion them tell me to " leave I do this for a living, you need to get out of my way" I've even had that happen while in a boat fishing.

    I would see this a lot in bass tournaments and out just fun fishing...seeing a fisherman catching fish and slowly working their way into that person's area. If we would out just having fun we would get invaded by guys who were prefishing for a tournament and they would start fishing our area tightly near us. Best tip is see what they are doing, check the cover/structure they are fishing and go duplicate somewhere else. Open communication works great too. We would have guys come up and tell us they are prefishing a tournament and we were more than happy to share the spot, share info, or even give it to them. Talking and communicating will avoid a lot of problems. Great video and info.

    My husband and always unload in the grass by the boat ramps and when everything is ready we put them in the water as quick as we can. Once we are done, we pull them up quickly and pull them over to the grass again and load them in the truck. We then pull over out of the way and clean them off and put everything away. I don’t want anyone thinking we are “those people”. Getting in the way. Thanks for the good tips.

      I feel the same way but if it’s public on a big lake we all know there are tons of people out partying or hanging out with friends and family and that’s there right so we have to deal with it or move to a different spot. We have to big lakes that are like that in my area and there are party coves type places on both them which are a blast when you’re doing that but when I fish or just want to be alone hints why I have a kayak I don’t go around those places. I have a buddy that has music anywhere or anything he does which can be annoying but that’s him and that’s his right so I just deal with it. I might ask him to turn it down but that’s only because I know him. I would never ask someone else to be quiet in a public space of any kind. Like I said if I am just getting to a spot that I’m so annoyed I want to say something I will just go somewhere else because they have every right to be there and do as they please as long as it’s legal I will deal with it

    I get a lot of banklers and boaters asking how/where on a particular lake I catch fish and I always tell them exactly where and how I'm doing it. It's a small lake so there aren't really any "secret" spots. I haven't had any issues with spot burning since they never listen to my advice, anyway. The boat ramp is where I see the most conflict/potential for conflict. You nailed that one.

    you outlined many of the reasons, as a lifelong angler, that I decided to not do tournaments. Over the years the worst I have encountered was on two different occasions while fishing big water on my valuable time off- unfortunately on the same days as local bass tournaments. Alone in coves on a huge lake had some glitter rocket arrogant pricks roar up and try to tell me if I wasn't in the tournament I needed to leave THEIR cove which THEY had pre-fished, and THEY had paid good money to be in the tourney. Ha ha!! AS for the "golden rule", yes of course that's true but sadly in today's world there are a whole lot of people who are totally self-centered and just don't give a F about how they treat others.

    Chad, I'm new to kayak fishing and have watched a lot of your u-tube kayak fishing videos. This video in particular really emphasised the need in kayak fishing to be aware of other anglers and the courtesy that should be given when fishing a particular spot. Having the ability to kayak fish in areas other anglers may not be able to get to is such a plus and should be respected. Being prepared when I hit the boat launch and being cognizant of others is something more of us as anglers should be aware of in whatever we do. I appreciate you identifying That Guy, so others that may have been That Guy once further understand the issues being caused.Great video for someone new to kayak fishing.

    I like packing and rigging my kayak white its still in the bed of my truck, then I back it down to the ramp, quickly unload it, and drag it off to the side of the ramp and get it out of the way. Then I can go park my truck. Takes less than a minute of time on the ramp and leaves it open for everyone else.

    • @JoelSzymczyk
      @JoelSzymczyk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      don't have that option if you transport on a roof rack. that said, all my gear is organized in duffel bags and my crate. I take all but one strap off in the parking lot. Usually I can back down the ramp, have the yak off the car and off to the side, put my gear bags and crate in, plus paddle and pfd, and be off the ramp in 3 to 4 minutes. I've seen WAY more "regular" boat guys clog up ramps than kayakers. I've seen kayakers do it too, but not as often. Even worse, are the morons who take all night to get their boat back ON the trailer!!

    I'm pretty sure I've had anglers give me bad info at the beginning of a tournament or on the water.
