  • The vw thing got some maintenance today. Kinda boring video but i changed fuel lines, fuel filter, and adjusted the front brakes. Plus Troy and his brother in law came and got some firewood. At least i got a little dirty today.

    That engine is made up of parts from several different years and types of Type 1 engines. I would right away get rid of that California smog distributor and find a pure mechanical -009 or -019 Bosch.
    That beetle engine has heat exchangers, but no fan shroud ducts to supply them. A Mishmash of parts for sure! Also, get a 34 PICT -1 carburetor from a junkyard. Those smog carbs are horrible...

      That must be an industrial fan shroud with no fresh air outlets , that's unusual.
      Pure mechanical advance on a street car is a detriment, not a plus. The mechanical + vacuum solution gives you the advance needed under partial load - like driving around town. Easier to drive, more efficient, better mileage.
      I run a German Bosch 034 with my Solex 34PICT3 on a bone stock 1600 and she pushes the bus at 70 all day long @ 190 - 210 oil temp.
      That push/pull setup I see he has works just fine if timed to 10 ATDC - the carb and dist. were designed to be a pair.
      (it retards the timing at idle IIRC - rudimentary smog attempt but it doesnt hurt anything if set up right)
      **Unless you're drag racing or running in SNORE - mechanical + vacuum advance is the better solution **

      ik04 ... most Things don't have heater channels in the frame because they used a gas fired heater under the hood. IOW, they didn't come with heat exchangers on the exhaust or the ducts on the fan housing. Obviously the engine here came from another car.

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Westy73 ... The Thing didn't come with heat from the engine or exchangers on the exhaust so that shroud is normal. What they had instead was a gas fired heater under the hood. Would agree on maintaining the stock carb and dist. A little fine tuning and it will run great.

    Scott, the fuel filter is designed to fit two different size hoses, you clamped your fuel line to the larger portion, for better fuel flow you should have cut off the smaller end where it changes to the larger portion. If what I said makes sense lol

    Something people don't realize is that being metric the fuel line fittings are 6 mm and they use 1/4 hose which is 6.4 mm so they rely on the hose clip to hold the hose on tight. Good to see you have the right hose.

  • @aussiebloke609
    @aussiebloke609 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Considering the Thing appears to have had a fire in the past...you may want to check your fuel hardline, all the way from the tank, and the grommets where the line enters and exits the frame. When the rubber grommets get old, they let moisture in, and the mild steel fuel line can rust through inside the frame, eventually filling the frame with gasoline when the leaks gets large enough. And the low point where it will leak out again just happens to be the rear grommet - right near the engine. Seen it happen a few times on old Beetles, sadly. Can't tell too well from the video, but that grommet @ 1:27 doesn't look all that tight against the frame.
    Easy test is to disconnect tank and engine, then seal the ends and see if it will hold a vacuum or pressure. I reckon it's worth a look for peace of mind. And its an easy fix if the pipe is on the way out - just switch to an external fuel line running down along the sill, where it can dry out any time it gets splashed. :-)

    Scott,I worked on VW and Porsche air cooled for many years.i have !3) be busses. My (73) type 2 I repowered with a 1972 porche 911 6 cyl with mechanical fuel injection. it was a time consuming and expensive project.on the thing we always put the fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carb. The vacuum advance also is a vacuum retard. The distributor also had centrifugal advance.thd felt under the rotor needs a drop of oil . If turning the rotor back and forth doesn't happen the distributor will need to be completely disassembled and feed up. If the advance retard diaphragm is bad just replace the distributor with a total centrifugal advance distributor
    Always use Bosch points, condenser , spark plugs and coil. Your coil is upside down and should be repositioned correctly. Also check the fan shroud where the coil mounts as I have seen the nut fixtures pull through and the coil will Fall and cause serious issues. It badly needs a valve adjustment your engine is noisey. Pull the rocker arms off and look at the adjustment screws and the valve tops for pitting.

    Maybe you can find a vw diesel engine and replace that gas burner. However there is a lot you can do to improve your power and torque on that engine. Me personally i would chunk.the intake and the carb for a set of webers. For a few bucks that engine could give you so much more

      ... Constant work? Yeah, a 50 year old vehicle probably needs more attention but back in the day (and if you knew what you were doing) they really only needed oil changes between major services. If you kept the valves properly adjusted and never threw a fan belt (overheating) you could get 100k miles out of an engine. OTOH, most people failed to do that because they just didn't understand how to do things correctly.

    All other issues, broken exhausts, fuel leaks, cracked twisted frame with water in it, faulty brakes, corroded headlight reflectors, bald tyres, faulty accelerater pedals, non functioning fuel gauges, dirty idle jets, worn front ends etc etc etc were just part of the VW experience.

    I see you have bug heater boxes on your thing's exhaust. as i don't see on the frame forks is the little stubs that come out as that connects to the heater control cables to the right lever on the handbrake originally the left lever be the rear footwell or defrost on late model bugs. or else the previous owner might of put in a beetle engine after the fire. as the later model 1974 thing had the beetle heat exchanger or heater boxes. as the rear tin is different and the beetle fan housing has the air ducts that feed the heater boxes. as 1971 and later 1600cc dual port engines has the doghouse oil cooler fan housings as earlier single port engines from the 1200cc, to the 1600cc single port motors has a regular fan housing as the housings 1963-1970 has the ducts and heater boxes the heater boxes on the 1975-1979 beetles are different as well as the exhaust system as they were fuel injected as these heater boxesyou got on went up to 1974.

      i see the original engine must of caught fire i seen a slot hole in the center of the bumper as that was for a hand crank to start the engine with as you need a special crankshaft pulley bolt as i seen the Things had them. the Beetle they had the gas heater as an option the Espar or the Stewart Warner Southwind heaters. the Thing it was closely related to the original WWll Vw as then it was called the Kubelwagen had the vw air-cooled motor was only a 25hp 1131cc which ran up to 1953. as the Kubelwagen its the KDF era which went from 1938-1945 the windshield on the Kubel folds down like the thing. the vw air-cooled engines in late 1953 the displacement went up to 1192cc which is 36 hp it went to July of 1960 on the bug as the 25 hp 1131cc and the 36 hp 1192cc the generator stand is casted in the right engine case half. then the engine in 1959 went to 40 hp 1192cc or 1200cc used on the bus then on the bug and Ghia went to 1962 on the bus and to 1965 on the beetle and Ghia as 1966 the bug and Ghia in the us got the one year only 50 hp 1300cc with the 69mm stroke the beetles and Ghias from 1967-1969 the bus from 1962-1967 had the 53 hp 1493cc 1500 single port the bug and ghia in 1970 the bus from 1967-1970 had the 1600cc single port the bus 1971 and the bug 1971-1979 Ghia 1971-1974 and thing 1973-1974 have the 1600cc dual port the 1975-1979 bugs 1600 dual ports the left case half has no provision for a mechanical fuel pump as the engines used a Bosch air flow controlled fuel injection system with a distributor like yours combination of centrifugal and a vaccum advance and retard. as people changed the fuel injection on them back to a carburetor on 1975 and later bugs the problem is they have to run an electric fuel pump designed for the carburetors the 34 pict-3 or a H30/31 pict carburetor with adapter

      @@derekobidowski3301 .. The EFI system you speak of in the later bugs is the Bosch L-Jetronic, which is almost identical to what Datsun / Nissan used on their 2.4 ltr 6 cyls in the late 70s.

    I would have put fuel filter in the same place so you can easily look at it.rather than struggle underneath.

    Getting rid of the NON- Braded rubber fuel hose is about the best thing you can do. doesnt take long for the fuel to deteriorate it, next thing you know, it's Bbq sauce.👍

      @@marzsit9833 Yes definitely, alcohol fudges everything up. If IAM not mistaking, the factory hose was "Aramid" Braded or something like that.

    Hello Scott. Your Thing has a Type 1 engine. I had a 72 VW super beetle in the early 80's. I was broke then and had to work on my beetle to get to work. I used the John Muir VW maint manual for idiots: www.users.on.net/~agonza/dev/How%20to%20Keep%20Your%20VW%20Alive%20OCR%20done.pdf. John Muir was a good mech and he had a since of humor. Read his book, you'll learn about your type 1 and have a good laugh!.
