Interesting fly with a great story about the origin and original materials. Thank You for taking the time to demonstrate the detailed techniques required to successfully complete this excellent fly !!! Best Regards

Thanks, Gary. The singe biggest mistake I see people making with the tying of this fly is putting the post on first. The body construction dictates that the post go last for the least amount of hassle. Clarence told me he used to tie these at the rate of 30 per hour. Not bad for a guy with hands twice the size of average.

Moved to Arkansas a few years ago and was told nobody catches anything on a dry fly - of course that was after a full day on the river casting everything in my fly boxes, I tried everything - woolly buggers, soft hackles, Clowser minnows, hoppers and some other attractor patterns and didn't even get a look. In desperation I tied on a Roberts Drake which has been my go to fly in Michigan and BAM 3 nice fish within about 45 minutes. The largest was a 20 inch brown trout. They are great flies and can be tied using various colors of thread. I learned to tie this pattern from someone who learned from none other than Tim Neal probably 20 years ago.

Hello Tom... thanks for sharing your experience. the Roberts Drake style fly is definitely one of Michigan's best ever, and we've had some real dandies....

Tim- love your videos-THANK YOU! Question: what hook are you using?

Thanks, Dave. The hook for #10-18 is my standard shank dry fly hook available on my website. For bigger flies, we generally use 2xl or 3xl hooks, also available .

I use these every season on the Manistee and Au Sable. Simple and deadly.

very nice tie! with a deer hair body and all that flared hair for surface tension it must float like a cork!
