In this video I'm making a simple drawknife for woodworking from an old planer blade, with lathe turned handles. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
Wow. This is awesome. I have been wanting a small straight handle draw knife to peel park from vine wrapped branches for canes and walking sticks. This really gives me a great idea.
So relaxing and peaceful to see these projects come together. Despite wishing I had a shop again, it eases my mind and puts me in a good place.
Wow! True craftsmanship, you hardly see people like this anymore who take pride in what they produce.

Did you just use the tool your making to make itself?
No he used just the blade with out the handles so there for he used just the tangs(not sure if thats how they are spelled) of the blade. Hes awesome.

Simple is an understatement. That's a work of art in itself. Bought a couple antique ones for leathercraft. Those blades were curved and worn down. But they had a 90° bend and the handles were vertical and a board goes across the top.

I like your spindle re-centering method. I've never tried that. Very enjoyable video.
It was inspired by people using metal lathes, they have a "bump" roller centering tool, that has a bearing on the end.

Now that is good craftsmanship, making an entire object from the ground up with custom machined pieces.
You should start putting your signature/stamp on these pieces along with the year! Very nice!👌

You can buy file handles like that pre made. Not pretty or well shaped like those.

I have really been enjoying the latest episodes you seem to be changing to bigger builds i guess that's the way to not get bored is to change it up ,thank you for sharing your work with us,all the best to you and yours,by the way are you still in the same shop or did you move or change your space
I'm still in the same broom closet :) I tried making a shop tour, but it's too tight to get any decent shots, I'd need some really wide lenses to get some decent footage. As for changes, I changed the surface of my workbench to a gray one, since it looks better on video. Also added a ton of lights. The lathe is a new addition, other than that it's pretty much the same.
The Small Workshop : You should try using a GoPro camera, you can get some great footage in small areas.👍

The old convention for fixing handles to items such as files, was to heat the tangs & then hammer the handles on. That way the metal burnt it's way into the handles & made the joining stronger.

I have a question where do you get all of the old knife blades?
It's actually the leftover piece from my chisel knife. And I got it from the flea market, it's an old planer blade. You could ask local woodworkers or on facebook groups, they tend to throw them away after they are sharpened too many times.

Why do you use windex as a wet sanding fluid? Just wondering
I saw some knifemakers use it, it's supposed to keep metal shavings in suspension better than water. Soapy water works well, but windex is more convenient to use and fairly cheap, especially since I steal it from my wife :D

Good one, that was firewood. The shavings ended up in my compost pile, to be used in the garden.
hehe. I am a supporter of solar / wind power so sorry but I do not consider 10% final product productivity as a great success. Good thing you are using the rest for compost but a tree need a lot of time to grow. People who live in areas where forests are long time gone will understand what I say here. Anyway your work is very nice but I can't stop thinking at the waste of 90%. But this is just me...
I really don't understand your way of thinking. Basically the wood I've used is a branch from the cleaning of plum trees in an orchard. The tree did not die for me to get this wood, on the contrary that cleaning probably improved it's health and prolonged it's life. It was destined to be firewood. It was in a pile of firewood. So that 90% you call waste would've been burned anyway.
Also the average house in a village in my country burns around one truckload of wood every winter. So 90% of this small piece of wood I've used here means nothing at all.
Don't get me wrong, I love trees and I probably planted more in my life than most self proclaimed saviors of the planet. I've even thought of buying cheap land in my native village, where people have cut the forest to plant wheat but the new generation left for the city and abandoned it, and plant trees back. I might do that in my old age if I retire there.
Oh, and don't get me started on the solar panel thing, go visit a plant that makes solar panels and see how green that energy is.

LOL. I do not troll. I did not knew all the details about the origin of this piece of wood. I just don't appreciate how from a chunk of wood like that you made just two small handles. No need to be upset when people express their opinions. This is why you have a comment section on your YT channel. I am not an extremist ecologist. I just stated that for some people, like me, wasting so much wood for so little product is not good. I had to leave my small town to move in a big concrete town and I hate it so much. Every time I see woodworking is like I feel the call of the land...and if I see cut trees I am not happy. I do not talk here about saving planet or whatever. Just about productivity over a natural asset that is less and less available in many parts of the world. No need to explain so much. You burn many trucks of wood to get warm. Maybe in a life time you cut down a small forest. Some people cut old trees and other people (most of people actually) cut everything to the ground. Everybody have their own needs and opinions. I do not judge you. I only stated my opinion appreciating your skills but not appreciating what you spent to make those handles. Why such a big deal?
I wasn't making a big deal out of it, it's hard to express feelings in writing since you don't see the tone in which I've written those things. Especially since english is not my native language. So it's okay for you to have an opinion and for me not to agree to it.
As for my long answer it was just to put more perspective to this situation. Woodturning in particular creates a lot of waste of wood since you start from the raw log. And I've seen a lot of comments like yours on this channel or on other woodturning channels.
