Sam Cooke's character really just wanted to make alot of money, and he felt that was enough to inspire the black community, and Malcolm X checked him and said, no brother, you need to help us with this civil rights movement!!!

I know, right? I thought what Malcolm said to him was so important. Sam was doing well but someone of with his platform really could have done more and thankfully Malcolm called him to accountability. Their conversations had me pausing to just think for a minute and put myself in their shoes.

@@TheLilly yes, I love that movie too so much. Malcolm X truly believed in black excellence, and I'm glad that the actor portrayed that. I also like the fact that the brothers represented all views equally. There's some celebrities who do not want to be activists publicly, and Sam represented them, and Malcolm X represented how we can't be apathetic especially if we have a platform.

I don't think that Sam just wanted to make a lot of money. I think he wanted economic empowerment and economic liberation. His record label wasn't just about him. He helped many artists secure their platform and own the rights to their arts. In the time when Black artists were getting robbed right and left, that is a powerful thing. It would be interesting to me to see his legacy if he didn't die so young. What we saw in these four men are four different perspectives on the struggles of black people and all of those perspectives are important. There is no one way to help the community. I like the back and forth when Jim tells Malcolm, "Sam is the only one of us not waiting on a white man for a check." When Malcolm balks, Jim replies, "You don't have a job." It's a funny line, but an important one. Someone had to and has to fund the movements for civil rights and black power. Black economic power is an important thing. It's far more than just wanting to make a lot of money.

@@annielockhart-gilroy465 I definetely agree with you on the 4 men having different perspectives. That's why thy had a debate because they had a different perspective on the right way to help civil rights. However, on the roof top, Sam dreamed about living in Baldwin Hills, California, and the only thing that matters is the "green" that's an important line. The main reason why Sam didn't want to speak out in his music is because he felt it wouldn't make him alot of money in doing so. All of Sam's arguments were about making money, and this is why he didn't use his platform to speak out on civil rights...because he valued the "green." Jim Brown ALSO believed making as much money as possible, aka economic empowerment, was of MORE important, which is why he defended his brother Sam and gave that dig to Malcolm. Malcolm X did have a job, so I didn't understand why it was necessary for Jim to say that. A minister, preacher, and activist is a job. However, I truly enjoyed the debate. The debate on is it important to use your platform for ownership, and make music, or use your platform to speak out on issues affecting the community. Sam was the former, and Malcolm X was the latter.
