This is my favourite Cohen piece and a song I always return to when things seem dark. I think this is the best cover I've heard so far (and I've heard many!) it's unadorned, intimate, heartfelt, and beautifully performed but what really hit me with your cover is you've managed to capture that same powerful emotional pleading that's the core of Cohen's performances of it. It's a song that teeters on the edge of fragility and hope, and imo the core of this song is the singer bringing a real naked & heartfelt realness to the performance. When Cohen sings it I always viscerally experience that he's inviting me to step with him out of somewhere broken into a place of hope; I got *that* same feeling in my chest listening to your version. I hope that doesn't come across as too gushing or dramatic, this is just a very very special song for me and you managed to capture the same magic that Cohen does when he sings it, so thank you so much for this little gift :)
Oh wow thank you so much for your generous and kind words! This song means so much to me too - and I understand exactly what you mean about emotional pleading - after all the line “there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in” conveys exactly that delicate but necessary balance between fragility and hope. I’m really moved to hear you connected with my humble little cover. Thanks for taking the time to say hi.
Sarah's voice is how the light gets in. Thank you
