Blimey .. you were lucky there. It's crazy when you think that your filter house is insulated and you have a thick roof. Glad you sorted it out and the fish are ok.
Cheers mate yeah I would of thought the insulation would at least keep the filter from freezing but luckily I had that de-icer you gave me so it doesn't happen again tonight 🤞🤞
Close call mate glad you got it sorted and fish are ok this cold snap is causing havoc saw black country koi last night he was well frozen I ordered some insulation today to do my filter shed all the best mate
wow leon that was a nightmare for you just goes to show how cold it can get overnight but on the plus side your fish are fine, have a great christmas my friend cheers martyn 👍👍
Had the similar problem with barrels and overflowing . I've not bothered to switch the pump back on I've got a 5000lph pump running my shower and air pumps going for time being fish are all happy and alive .I added 25mm polystyrene sheets to cover pond before minus temps hit us hard . Glad you got it sorted tho Leon
Cheers Michael yeah they will be fine with the air and shower and I bet those polystyrene sheets are helping big time . Merry Christmas mate and a happy new year 🎉
Oh dear. At least the fish are all good. Could have been worse. Seen so many similar videos the last few days. Warming up a bit at the weekend at least. Mine are just ticking over at 7 degrees with the help of the heat pump. Glad I've got it really
Bloody hell! That’s just like our winter weather here in Canada which is when we shut down our filtration system completely. I hope no heavy damage and your fish will be ok. Merry Christmas!
I know mate crazy temperature for over here it was - 7°c now it's gone up to 11°c and that happened overnight . Merry Christmas mate and a happy new year 🎉
Glad you got everything sorted, the filters running again and the fish are all good.. Here in southern Ontario Canada frozen pipes come with the season which is why most people shut down the filters and drain the plumbing usually no later than early November to avoid problems like you have just experienced. Hopefully things will warm up a bit soon so this doesn't happen again. Stay safe and stay warm.
Thanks Ken I can only imagine how cold it gets over there we are very lucky in the uk as these temperatures are a rarity. Merry Christmas mate and a happy new year 🎉
Jesus Christ almighty!! I’m surprised the barrels didn’t split! Thank god you built the filter hut. It must be doing something. I’ve had my air on full blast all week and that’s seems to have kept me ice free. But your ponds way bigger so not sure what you could of done really. 😮
Wow mate you were very lucky it could have been a lot worse thankfully you caught it early. And temps going up a bit from Monday 🤞 roll on the spring 🌡☀️ Stay safe and warm Andy.👍
I know mate luckily the pump cut out as the float switch was stuck it ice thankfully all is well now. Yes mate definitely roll on spring . Merry Christmas to you gra and bizley and a happy new year 🎉
Leon, oh my goodness mate what an issue. I have seen some but yours is the worst seen so far. Glad you have been able to get it sorted and the fish are all ok. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2023 ;-)
Crisis averted buddy…..close call😳. Amazing what damage a bit of frozen water can do , let’s hope the temps pick up again🤞🤞🤞. Glad to see all the fish are fine👍. Merry Christmas to you and your family, hope to see you in the new year 😊👍🎄
Cheers phil yeah mate luckily the pump cut out the float switch was stuck so would of emptied. Merry Christmas to you and family mate and a happy new year 🎉 😀
Lucky you didn’t get any of your barrels and pipes split. After seeing this I’m going to put a condensate heater on the pipes, hopefully I can get away with one. Good news you didn’t lose all your pumps.
@@progressivepondkeeping Yes brilliant, my outside tape blew off and leaked water out all night and it was fully insulated, which was weird. It was only -4. 🥴🥶
My pond hasn't iced over but it is a flipping chilly 3c. They are forecasting 11c day and night on Sunday in the south west and I am worried that this swing in temperature could cause harm.🥶
wonder if running salt would stop icing, to be honest I run a heater so the lowest I get to is about 7c, having said that my sump for running my waste to the drains and the fresh water line are frozen good and proper.
Wow you have had it hard, I think you need to increase the size of pipe on your return, have it oversized, insulate the pump feed, and have a frost stat actuated heater in the filter room, insulate as much pipework as possible, wrap the barrells, but a frost stat and heater in there would be a life saver, glad you got it sorted, have a great christmas and a very happy new year, and hopefully the new year will be better for all of us, best wishes, Tony.
I normally cover with with a tarp but didn't bother this year though I doubt that would of helped in these temps I'll have to get a proper one done next season
Glad you got it sorted mate and the fish are ok. I have had massive problems with swim bladder chill. 4 of my fish were on the bottom on their side motionless, thought they were dead. Pond temperature was 1.8c so had to bite the bullet and buy a heater. Pond temp now 7c and fish seem to be recovering. Freakish weather and now we will have the issues that come with a massive rise in temp with the mild weather and a swing of around 20 degrees.
Looks freezing 🥶 🥶. I would suggest that pond's should have some sort of heater even if it is not normally used to stop the pond and filters from freezing 😜
@@progressivepondkeeping I’m further south, so although I didn’t freeze it got pretty cold. Think I’ll fit one of them hose Cloverleaf heaters which are pretty cheap to use only when the temperatures get down to freezing!
I use a floating cattle tank filter also you could get a little portable propane heater or a space heater for the filter rooms. It only takes a little heat but propane is cheaper than electric.. hang a sheet of plastic over the door way.
Filters starting to ice up hear but getting temps going up today they say them pumps are ok and should spin up when the ice go's the a good thing about them its the worst i have seen it down hear in years i would not want this cold snap to last any longer i would have problems

I live in upstate New York and my koi pond really freezes over solid. I turn the main pumps off around November and just run an air bubbler to keep a small hole in the ice. the fish seem to do ok unless we get an extreme temperature change . One year it went down to - 3 degrees below O for three days then jumped up to 50 degrees after that. Almost all my fish died. I had some big koi that were about 5 years old and about 12 lbs. each. It was heartbreaking. I don't know how I could realistically heat the pond.
Such a shame to lose koi especially big ones luckily we don't get these freezing temperatures very often maybe an off grid gas boiler could heat your pond
Hey Leon. Yes you have to be careful during the winter as ice will develop and divert water... Your koi should be ok...
