Needs to be filled from the bottom drain ideally with one litre. Using the fill plug allows air pockets and this has been found to be the cause on under filling leading to damage to the transfer box. I use a 17mm bung with a hole drilled in the middle for the fill tube. Once full, quickly remove the bung and screw in the fill cap. Drive the car then top up via the fill plug for a perfect level.
Do you recommend driving it around the block a bit to warm it up before you add the entire amount of fluid? Or could you just let it sit and let the air / fluid settle and level the car out and finish topping the fluid off before driving?

Make sure the car is leveled in the air and make sure you fill the right amount. Yes warm the car up and add more oil
