The biggest problem I have with the NHL games is the player models. It's hard to believe that the FIFA games have 20 or so leagues and most of their player models look pretty accurate. But when it comes to NHL, players still have generic faces. -_-

It's not like you see the face of the players a lot.. It's not a game where you constantly look at the faces nor are the faces a main focus.. It's a sports game. Look at almost every sports game out there.. The facial structures aren't going to be top quality.. Do the faces really affect how you play this game? Do they distract you? no...
In my opinion, if I pay 60 dollars a year for basically the same game with graphic updates, you should at least have the top line of players faces correct, because it does affect the gameplay. EA's goal is to make this game more realistic and the faces is a huge take away from that.

Many Avs with no faces (I know Landy, Dutch, and Mac are correct) Barrie being the most standout. He has a fairly unique facial structure and they just have a very basic default face on him.
I can make a long list of well known players that have generic faces, and a list of players that have the wrong hair colour, and skin colour. Most of the goalies they were lazy on too because they're wearing a mask so it's rare to see their actual face, but when you do they look nothing like the actual player. I agree that sometimes it would be enough to just have the basic features right, like they have done in some other sports games. When it comes to head shape, players with long hair and stuff like that getting it to fit under the helmet might be a restriction with their current system. At least that's my guess.
Cory Schneider in nhl 16 doesn't have orange hair and doesn't have any facial hair. For being the best Devils player and having a 91 rating I think they actually should have made him look realistic
