I was in the Marine Corps in Iraq and I was digging a trench to make bunkers. My buddy was out there with me on the ground and the siren went off that a mortar/rocket attack was incoming. We are out at this part of the base building a bunker specifically because it's too far away from other bunkers. So we have nowhere to go. We locked eyes, and I have no idea how, but with zero words we both agreed to get under the bulldozer I was operating. I slammed the blade into the deck, cut off the engine, leapt out of the thing, and went scrambling underneath the dozer. We were under there for like a second or two listening to the rounds impact the base and then we made eye contact. As soon as we did, we both burst into hysterical laughter. As each round hit, we laughed harder and harder. When it was over, we went back to work like it never happened. Now Marines are fucking psychos, so I'm not so sure it's good to be behaving in similar way, but at least you're not alone. ***Boring real reason: I studied what happens to the brain in combat(or any life and death crisis) and one of the things is you experience an extreme dopamine spike. Dopamine is what the most addictive drugs in the world elevate. So you were basically high as fuck during the confrontation. Then as soon as you knew you were safe, your body dumped a bunch more feel good biochemicals into you to reward you for surviving. Laughter is not an entirely uncommon response. Fun Fact: This dopamine spike is why people get addicted to War and other insanely dangerous behaviors.

Laughing can be a common way to deal with intensely stressful situations. Especially if it involves harm. For me it happend when i was out with friends and a storm happened that could wipe us out, but we were still dying laughing.
